Any Aussie/kiwi Blades supporters would probably know Liberato Cacace.

19 year old Left Wing Back (Wikipedia says fullback which is definitely wrong) not afraid to get forward and take on a man outwide. Good with ball at feet and decent pace. But can also get back and intercept just as well.

Everyone who has seen him progress will agree he's destined for Europe very soon.

Best part is he plays in A-league so would cost virtually nothing to sign and wages would be peanuts. Wouldn't be adversed to signing on 1 year contract or even giving a trial.

We’d likely encounter Work Permit issues.

Someone has been playing Football Manager... 😉

(he has Italian heritage so wouldn't need a WP... well, until Brexit)

Haha, no actually I'm a Kiwi, he was in the same team as Sarpreet Singh last year (who recently just made his debut for Bayern Munich against Werder over the weekend) and everyone rates Cacace just as highly.

Why’s that? All the Kiwis I’ve worked with didn’t seem to have a problem. I thought we had a thing with Australia and NZ where they don’t need a work permit.

Unless that's new, they still need a work permit (Certificate of Sponsorship, to use the correct terminology); that said there is a provision for young (under 28 IIRC) people from AUS/NZL (& Japan, Singapore(?) and others) called the Youth Mobility Scheme to make it easier - however that doesn't allow employment as a sportsperson. I seem to recall that back in the day the predecessor scheme did not prohibit such employment, but the rules were changed when it became apparent that football clubs were using it to bring players over (I think Millwall were one, if memory serves).

Yeah, thinking about it, the majority were young so probably on the youth mobility scheme.

His name scans perfectly into the the rhythm of "seven nation army" so it's a big yes from me

Good call - I am a local in Wellington and I had thought about this same thing recently. Liberato looks a good young player, strong on the ball and skillful. The Phoenix have a few decent youngsters actually - they have changed their model somewhat recently to purposely try to become something of a talent production line (focusing on youth, developing from within etc.).

I haven't run into Gary Hooper yet (joined the 'Nix from the Pigs in October), but Wellington is a small place so it'll probably happen sooner or later. I wonder whether he'd sign my Blades jersey! haha
