I’ve got a mate whose dad started this some years ago in his 60’s. They live in the same village, out Mexborough way. His mother is a respectable woman, a midwife, and she couldn’t understand what was going on, she stood by him but it must have been awful for her, working in the community. As for my mate, he got called “the flasher’s lad”. Bloody humiliating for him as well.

His dad had always been an intelligent respectful bloke. But this just ruined his reputation. And the thing is, he couldn’t stop it. He repeatedly offended and it caused terrible trauma not just for his victims but for his entire family.

I think cases like these are very sad and it’s easy to just consider them pervs but there’s something else going on there.

I hope Shipperley gets the support he needs. Feel sorry for him tbh and even more sorry for those affected by it.

People say rape is more about power and hatred than sexual pleasure. But the mental health card doesn’t get played too often in such cases. So what’s the deal with compulsive flashers?

I don’t think it’s possible to answer that in general, because every individual case is complex and may have different facets to it. But it’s considered to be a form of personality disorder which may be linked to other things, like personal trauma, sexual or emotional, in childhood.

The objective is usually to seek gratification by causing shock to another person. That is usually sufficient. They aren’t necessarily looking to engage in sexual activity with their victims, the pleasure they derive from creating the shock is usually enough.

They can be treated with psychotherapy and medication. It is a mental health issue in the majority of cases.

All sexual deviants have mental health issues, as do all criminals on that basis. The lack of knowing right and wrong. He knows it's wrong to crack one off in public but he's done it anyway. I'm fully on board with the mental health agenda, however to start excusing criminal behaviour on the basis of mental health is for the experts to decide. Not just based on the fact that he used to play for my football team.
