Been arguing with my Man U supporting mate about this. It’s simply not a foul. He is quite the footballer himself and has played for years. Apologies if dual thread, couldn’t find a dedicated one.

His first argument was it was in the back. It’s clearly not.

Then he went on this bizarre rant that’s it’s a foul because Jones wasn’t ready to go shoulder to shoulder, so it’s not fair because he’s looking at the ball.

I know you can’t charge in the back or chest, use arms or elbows, or use excessive or reckless force, but this is hardly that.

I don’t buy into all this “back in my day you could get away wi owt” or “the game’s gone totally soft”, but this is a fair shoulder barge on a defender who didn’t know where he was going or what to do.

It survived the ref, the linesman and VAR. My Dad’s a qualified ref and supports Wednesday and even he said it was fine.

It’s a game of opinions, but I’m afraid anyone that thinks this was a foul is wrong :)

Show him the Fowler goal, the one where he shoulder barges Neville as an example of why it isn't a foul. That should piss him off even more.

Man Utd fan at work had no issue with that or the 3rd goal. However a fan of a team in a different League has been banging on all day about 2 lucky goals that should have been given as free kicks

I 100% agree it wasn't a foul. And am glad they didn't check on VAR

This one's easy, Jones is just wank, Mousset isn't.

Sorry to hear about your dad mate

Phil Jones ? sorry to say that was probably the worst defensive display by a player at the lane since ............................. errrr ........................ since ...................................Jay McEveley

Speaking of fouls or not, I think it was Jay McEverley (v Coventry?) a few years back went in two footed and somehow only got a yellow - might have been the same game that there was a ‘goal line technology’ moment for George Long!

One of the highlights of that season for me. We were so bad you had to laugh, or else you’d cry.

Gary Neville called it right on TV when he described it as no foul and Jones "going down like a ragdoll".
One of the most overrated players in the PL - I’ll be very surprised if that game isn’t has last for MU. Fair play to Gary Neville, he’s obviously and understandably MU to the core but was fulsome in his praise for us.

We were in The Stag when the team news came through. When we heard about Jones, Trig Jnr (TY) said “we’re in business” and there was fair bit of unhappiness when he went off at half-time.

Regarding former Blades defenders, I did enjoy that chorus of 'You're just a shit Neill Collins' directed at Harry Maguire.

I have to say, I did wonder if it’d be disallowed by VAR. I mean if that was in the corner flag and Jones was jockeying it out and fell over it’s given as a foul 9/10. They aren’t fouls, but they give them, just because, well they just do.

I barely celebrated because I thought it would come back. Even when VAR doesn't ruin it, it ruins it.

The Mousset foul was a 50/50 shoulder barge.

Not a foul but you often see refs usually give them if another player falls down like they’ve been shot.
Jones waited for the challenge and just went down playing for the free kick but it backfired on him.
Thought it was brave for the ref to wave play on.

Message received on the group chat after it went in

“Stick that one up your arse Jones you fucking orc”

Mousett did Jones before that, and again when Jones flopped on the floor and got a Free Kick

Just strength, we want more .... looking forward to him putting John Stones on his arse

I didn't think there was much wrong with that one either tbh.

Thought it was overly strong, but Jones is a pansy. From the still in the OP, you can see that Jones' arms are behind his body at the point of contact. His positioning was awful, his balance was off and he was there for the taking. I bet Egan enjoyed seeing it as that is the perfect Gaelic challenge.

You clearly spent far too much time on this.

All you had to say was Luton Shelton.

He fell down to a lesser challenge earlier and won a free kick, knew he was going to lose this one so fell down again. Tough shit really, no foul.

I must admit to never having heard him speak, although in all seriousness he does look a bit simple, so I'm probably not missing out on much. If he'd stayed on for 10 more minutes I think we'd have scored again and won easily. Hope he plays at Old Trafford, he's fucking cack.
