Afraid I have never heard of the NCS, sounds a creditable organisation. The question to me is why there should be such set ups repairing vandal damage when the better, more economical, answer is to find and punish, properly, the perpetrators. When looking at the damage in the photo, I can't help but think who ever did it are no good to themselves, anybody or anything else. We all pay for public services, no excuse, hit the bastards where it hurts, scum. Wow! feel better for that, day will run a little better now.

yes I agree wholeheartedly.

The NCS thing is very good for kids. It’s for 14-16 year olds I think. It’s a course over a few weeks that teaches them life skills, organising themselves, making a positive contribution to the community. It’s voluntary and it’s well regarded by employers apparently.

It’s hard work but they get a lot from it and the community benefits as well.

Appreciate the info on NCS, like the recruiting age range, wonder if its through schools and if not why. I know someone who works with "under privileged children" wonder if they know of it. Sounds a good tool to use when working in that field. Thank you.

Was it the chippy that's there now? Can't remember whether there was another one or where it may have been?

Blades 0 Palace 2 in Sept 1978. Imre Varadi's debut. He is the one attempting the diving header. The last time I saw Woody play his competitive game (his last was the following week's defeat at Fulham)

I think the chippy at Gleadless Townend is still in the same place as before. I remember going there back in the 1970's, it used to be good. Blond haired lad called Steve had it then. I had a girlfriend who had an unhealthy proclivity for his pies. We used to go there a lot. Eventually I had to dump her because she became too fat. ;)

There used to be another one at the far end of White Lane, near to the Old Harrow. It used to be called "White Heather Fish Bar" back in the day. I think that's still a fast-food place of some sort now. And of course, the Old Harrow, which used to be a bit of a disco on Friday nights back then, is now an Indian restaurant.

How about this place?

The Rex cinema at Intake.

A popular place to see films for us living on the south side of the city. I remember seeing "Last tango in Paris" there. All I remember about that film is something to do with dairy products. It led me and my girlfriend to experiment with the same. 🥴 The girlfriend developed quite a penchant for it, regrettably all those calories meant she got too fat and I had to dump her.;)

This was my favourite cinema back in the day...

I had a mate who lived at a pub on Nursery Street. We used to stay over at his place and go to the late night showing around 11pm. I saw Emmanuelle there. Sylvia Kristel. By gum! She wor a fine lass! And that scene where she's swimming naked underwater... 🥴 I went out and bought my first pair of chlorine goggles after that. I do hope I'm not giving the false impression that I spent my youth in seedy cinemas watching sex films?🤔

Oh no, of course not.

Maybe the internal penning fences were removed but the perimeter fencing remained for a while.
That sounds quite likely. I remembered fences coming down quickly, and making escape routes sideways available would have been sensible. Perimeter fences seemed normal pre-disaster, but it was a relief to see them go after the disaster.
