After a couple of months I recall the chant changed to "we need Deano"!

I was critical of Flo at the time but looking back he would have done much better if we'd aigned another forward at the same time to play alongside him - someone with pace preferably. When you think we'd never replaced Agana, there was no way that Flo was going to flourish alongside one of three from Alan Cork, 34 and knackered, Bobby Davison, 34 and knackered, Adrian Littlejohn, 25 and sadly just not good enough, but probably the most suited to play alongside Flo. We looked a different side once Blake came in, but it ended up been too little, but only just.

Also those critical of Deano for leaving are harsh - he was born in Leeds still lived there, he had played brilliantly for us for five seasons and quite frankly knew that all he could do was stay up with us - I hate saying that trust me, but with Brearley in charge, there was no chance we would ever push on.

Back in 1993 Leeds were a big club; just won the league two years previously As it happened Leeds didn't do much in Deano's time there but I totally get why he left and it does pain me to say it.

As for the goal and celebration, he really did get some stick that day. I was one of them I admit, but I don't blame him for celebrating.

I used to sing it using the John Motson pronunciation “Flu, Flu, Flu” Flu....”

Until someone jabbed me.

My memories of Flo were

1: He seemed to have a Keith Lemon style white bandage around his wrist for ages.
2: He seemed amazingly good at winning headers....it was like having James Hanson just knock it into the box and you knew Flo would win the header everytime.
 
Can't think about Flo's time there without looking back to Jonas Wirmola. He seemed a real find and looked dominant be Wimbledon on debut. I wonder why he was not given more chances?

It's one of the biggest disappointments that Wirmola didn't stay longer with us, especially given that he was far better, and younger than Brian Gayle, who was on his way down and as much as I loved Gayle, he was knackered by then. I don't know why he didn't stay longer but my guess was that he was homesick because he was played a few times with us and looked quality.
 
Yeah apparently Wirmola never really settled according to bits and pieces I’ve read over the years. Hardly remember him too well to be honest but my dad assures me he was very good.

A 3 0 loss at Blackpool in the League cup was not well received by Bassett.
Last appearance for Wirmola apparently.
 

I loved him, but only because I was around 14. He was essentially a little bit shite; massive but didn't really impose himself (a bit too nice), no pace, but quite a good footballer for his size, odd touch of class. As others have said, he replaced someone in Deano who was quick, strong, good in the air, always a danger. He wasn't.

I remember though when Kendall came and suddenly changed the way we played and showed our footballers (Ward, Whitehouse, even Dougie Hodgson turned into a ball playing centre half, briefly) there was a reserve game just before Flo went, where (possibly his last game with us) he played pretty much as a sweeper and was fucking brilliant. Anyone else remember, or is there a chance I dreamt it?? In which case as a 15 year old lad I really should have been having different dreams

I always remember hearing an interview with him on Radio Sheffield as we were driving home after that game.

Simon Clark: "Jonas, you coped well out there today. John Fashanu is a pretty big boy."
Wirmola [in very Swedish accent]: "Well, I am quite a big boy too, you know."

In fact I remember many a time Utd getting a bit of a hiding down at Highbury. Closest I got there was the 1-1 FA Cup Bruce took em off the pitch game, when we had equalised with the penalty and really had them on the rack. Before they cheated, a winner was coming for Utd that day.

Except that was a different match. Andy Gray scored a last minute penalty. We drew 1-1. Drew replay 0-0 at home & lost on penalties. Bruce taking players off the pitch was 1998/99.
