Best were the 2/3 Circulars. Parents used to put their kids on Sunday afternoon so they'd get a couple of hours peace, or whatever. Used to go all around the city suburbs and end back where you started from.

My dad said Malcolm Barrass was a terrible signing as he was slow and had terrible distribution. Joe Mercer signed him from Bolton and to the surprise of our fans, Joe Shaw was dropped. It didnt take many games before Mercer realised his mistake.

In the late 60’s early 70’s I used to catch a 60 from Chesterfield Road, along Abbey Lane all the way up to High Storrs. Fell in love for the very first time with a pretty girl I never spoke to who got on the morning bus. Used to get ten No. 6 from a fag machine for 2 bob, but sat downstairs to gaze at the girl. Before it was called stalking, obvs.

I went to High Storrs, saw Arnie Sidebottom make his Man U debut against dem Blades and take his only test wicket at Trent Bridge on Live Aid Day and that trek from the terminus was a sod in winter until they altered the routes

Yep - 174/274 in the early 70s. We used to catch it from Ecclesall Infants on High Storrs Road to Springfield Road/Avenue, 1p fare before the 2p everywhere was brought in later. Years later it was the 774 and we caught it from High Storrs when it bothered to turn up, I walked most days and rarely got passed by it.

Remember that one, six weeks school holidays. Only we did it on our own mainly when we were bored and couldn't find ow't to do. Needed find a penny (1d) also.

We as kids used to do that on the 51 from Townend on cold wet nights , 8p in total 2 p to town then 2p to lodge moor and back killed a couple of hours .

This feels like "Da Ja Vous" but here goes, your Dad was a good judge of a footballer. Barrass was slow and ponderous but managed 3 full caps,2 in succession in'51 then missed 8 and a final one in'53. He toured South America with England in'53, only playing in a none international warm up game V a Buenos Aires XII in the River Plate Stadium. See photo2nd left BR. Anyone know 1st left back row? Face looks familiar, am thinking associated with Charlton. England tried 5 centre halves plus Barrass between '51 and '54-Jack Froggatt-Harry Johnson-Sid Owen-Clark of Chelsea and Ufton of Charlton. They eventually settling on Billy Wright a converted wing half, which is what Joe Shaw was and he never really got a look in. Joe was as good as Wright but was a street better than Barrass.
