We need to talk about Chris Wilder

Cracking article by football 365, must be written by a relative šŸ˜€

Great article and sums things up.perfectly
I'm pretty sure I stated at the start of the season no matter how well we did we'd always be seen as battlers and scuttlers ,it's a reputation we've had ( and deserved ) for a long time going back to the days of Bassett and carried on with Warnock but it's a shame for the manager who deserves more credit than he's getting .
My overall feeling on how I want this season to go is that if love us to stay up primarily for him as I think with the budget to slowly improve the squad he could revolutionise English football

My eldest lad was born in 1979. Very early in his primary education, his school, like many others, started the, "everyone is equal" approach to learning. I remember being angry that the school sports day had no winners. I'm all for valuing the individual equally, but that does not represent real life and now we have young people who feel entitled, just because schooling never gave them the opportunity to win or lose.
Wilder obviously has a a decade or so advantage over my son, because he grew up in competitive environment, and he understands how winners are made. His honesty with his players should be the norm for all competitive sports people.

...and a very sensible post in the ā€œcommentsā€ section from a Jim Russell.

Agree.....think much of the problem relates to pundits and journalists towing the part line (especially in today’s climate of social media)

These people are professionals and want to stay in a job earning money to support their families.
The editors of newspapers and producers of ration stations will be making it very clear that writing about Liverpool, Man Utd etc has massive world wide interest earning papers and radio stations massive numbers and advertising income.

Regards the recent Sheff Utd v Liverpool match they would say that praising Sheff Utd goes against the grain and won’t be accepted by many people , in fact they’ll find it boring, switch off due to having little interest in reading about how good SU was.

However regards the same match, if you report that Liverpool had a poor ā€œoff gameā€ probably because they underestimated the weak opposition because they were more focussed on the Champions League then it pleases the masses and they will continue to read that paper. Every now and then they do like to be controversial so a small percentage of the media will test the waters and talk about the ā€œqualityā€ of SU and ā€œtactical geniusā€ of CW.

Regards the ā€œIs Wilder a dinosaurā€ comments from Natalie Sawyer on Talksport she probably felt uncomfortable saying it.
She’s always been a massive fan of Wilders and has rated him in the past, however on this subject her and Danny Murphy were forced to pick a side.
Sawyer probably wanted to big up Wilder’s comments towards Henderson but the produces decided that Murphy would have that role.
So Natalies job that morning was to think of every possibility why Wilders treatment of Henderson was wrong...and she was told to exagerrate.
Danny Murphy on the other hand was given the role of polar opposite view saying how if Henderson wants to reach the top then Wilder was correct to be critical.

The Talksport produces will now be praising Natalie Sawyer regards her ā€œIs Wilder a dinosaurā€ comment.
They’ll be telling her how it trended on Twitter and Facebook and has given their station extra exposure.....job done...well done Natalie.

Wilder will know the score and now appreciates that there will be loads of stuff good and bad said about his every move and every word.
However as they say even bad exposure is arguably positive....we and Wilder are on the world map and we are being talked about virtually every day.

Whereas Ben Bradshaw said

The article focuses on getting Chris Wilder recognition for his achievement thus far - a better option would be to compare and contrast his achievements vis-a-vis the other Ingerlund PFMs which would be a step along what he effectively seeks with this article. Seb is an excellent F365 writer but getting a bit caught out in his own hype.

Which is a combination of middle management speak and gibberish. One of those twats who thinks chucking together some phrases he’s heard intelligent people say makes him sound intelligent.

I wasn't sure what Bradshaw was trying to say so I'm glad you made that point BushBlade
I think he's asking for an article which compares Wilder with Dyche and Howe, I'm sure Wilder would come out favourably given the time he has spent in the lower leagues nursing teams who have had no resources.
I really don't know what the final sentence is trying to say.

I wonder if our defeat against Liverpool has had more press / media coverage than Norwich's win over Man City.

Wilder is like I say like Dyche and Howe, he is another breath of fresh air for the PL none have massive budgets to live with. The beauty of it is they live within their means and "cock a snoop" at so called big boys, that bird ought to get back to ironing and washing pots. oh no Hendo make a mistake kiss him better, no give him a round of fucks and he'll know what he's done can't cope with women in football with comments like that.

To be fair Natalie is usually excellent, and a Wilder fan to boot. She just got this one wrong, no need to chuck her, and every other woman on the planet, under the bus.

Cheers. I’m not sure why he didn’t just say that then because my first thought was that there was no mention of Dyche and Howe, just a straw man argument about Bruce (who has ever seriously suggested he should be Man U manager?), Pardew and Allardyce (who was touted for big jobs but, in his day, he was streets ahead of Bruce and Pardew).

You can argue that CW isn’t being linked with big clubs because he’s not foreign, he’s got a Yorkshire accent and looks a bit like he’s come to supervise some landscaping work but you can also argue that it’s because he’s done fuck all at the top level - yet.

I work from home and listen to Talksport and 5live every day for hours.
We’ve had far more publicity than many PL teams (including the other promoted teams Norwich and Villa)
But that’s down to Wilder consistently raising some really interesting news stories and discussion points.

1: Many people in the media are fascinated by Wilder due to his total honesty. It shows how much the PL had changed and many are asking is Wilders approach old fashioned or is it the preferred method (better than the softly softly media friendly don’t rock the boat approach).

2: After winning away at Everton , Wilder acknowledged we were great defending as a team but was still critical saying in possession it was our worse performance of the season. Almost every manager is happy after a win.....but not Wilder, he was still critical.

3: We matched Liverpool for large sections of the game but instead of being happy....Wilder raises the subject of ā€œglorious defeatā€.
It’s an excellent discussion point where English culture likes a good loser....where as Wilder says what’s to point in earning all the plaudits when it’s ZERO points.

It raises an excellent point that all promoted clubs seem to target 4th from bottom as success. The normal view is clubs need to know their place and act accordingly. So the media are fascinated that we could go to Old Trafford and Wilder would be seriously targeting a win. Under Warnock we’d be hoping for a draw and just keeping the score down, Again a great talking point about how underdogs need to be more confident and have genuine belief they can win.

4: Henderson makes a blunder causing us to lose. It’s fashion for managers to protect players and say ā€œhard luck it’s a learning experienceā€.
Chris Wilder used an old fashioned method of treating players like men. He was honest saying if you want to be a top player you need to cut out mistakes.
He’s basically thrown the gauntlet down to Henderson....sink or swim...obviously he knows Henderson is confident and expects him to react positively.

I’ve already heard it said in recent weeks that Wilder is a media man’s dream....so he’s always going to be in the news....for good stuff and bad stuff.
Someone has already said that if the media attack Wilders honesty too much...then he might water down his personality becoming more boring.

How is the standard of analysis so poor in this country that we still have to listen to this from those who should live and breathe football? It's not as if we get any genuine insight from most of them even when they're on form.

Summed it up for me.

Agreed. I think the author probably knew he was discussing a manager who'd never been sacked, and promoted though every division with tiny resource.

I've thought about that for a microsecond, and can confirm that none of the "other Ingerlund PFMs" remotely match up.

I couldnt listen to Talk Shite for 2 minutes its complete and utter garbage

Media: moans constantly that professional footballers are pampered and they need to take responsibility and focus on their job.

Wilder: I'm not going to sugarcoat it, he's a professional footballer and needs to focus.

Media: moans football managers aren't pampering professional footballers enough and they need to focus on sugarcoating it.

It’s the format...deliberately doesn’t give balanced opinion.....as that’s considered boring and doesn’t provoke thinking outside the box.
So they have 2 presenters arguing giving extreme polar opposite views.....reminds me of many of the posts on here and the need for exaggeration.
We never play OK....we’re either brilliant or rubbish with reasons why both could be true.
Sharp isn’t a half decent striker with strengths and weaknesses.....he’s brilliant, a legend with plenty of ammunition as to why this is true
Or he’s past it, over rated and not as good as our other strikers with plenty of ammunition to to the reasons why.

They cater for the majority and must be doing somethimg right as it has the best listening figures in the UK.
Sometimes it reminds me of listening to Brian The Blade....often the presenters are just on the wind up....still get plenty of irate callers who don’t realise it.

What a cracking article. The appointment of Frank Lampard at Chelsea only backs this up. The media continually rim him for giving youth a chance, making it sound revolutionary and vaguely mention the transfer embargo that forced his hand in passing. They speak of him like he's the next best thing and God's gift to the Premier League, whilst ignoring that last year he failed to get a team promoted who had one of the biggest budgets in the league, and arguably one of the most talented squads. Wilder's history and achievements in football management is criminally ignored because he's not a household name at a fashionable club. I have nothing against Lampard but get sick of the likes of TalkSport masturbating themselves frantically when speaking about his youthful team on a daily basis!

It's interesting that the mainstream media only print snippets here and there about Wilder, and the more well known pundits give bits of credit now and then, although I'll remove Alan Shearer from this as he's been full of nothing but praise for us and Wilder on MOTD, whilst it's journalists abroad, less mainstream pundits (Colin Murray), and online articles and YouTube hosts (Benjamin Bloom), who actually report the full facts about us and Wilder, but doesn't reach as bigger audience.

Personally I love it when pundits/media/fans call wilder a dinosaur, long may it continue, hopefully if everyone, especially club chairmen believe the hype he'd end up being unemployable anywhere else, and we'd be lumbered with the tactically naive dinosaur for a very long time.

There's nobody in this country, or potentially anywhere with his mix of success at so many different levels.

If he hasn't earned the benefit of the doubt to manage his team as he sees fit, who has?

Couldn't give a shit what anyone says about CW. The only opinions that matter are those of Blades fans. And CW sometimes isn't interested in those either!! (Leicester) and long may that continue!!

Man Utd would love their very own dinosaur (winner) back, but he’s sadly retired.

I sometimes listen in the car when I'm channel hopping but often get fed up.

I've managed to drop on a few mentions of us in recent weeks but I'm not sure if that's luck or as said above, we've been talked about a lot.

Not got a lot of time for outlets that have to polarise things too much to try to get contributors through getting a rise out of them.

I for one am getting a bit pissed off with all this praise. On the off chance any struggling club directors are passing through looking for a new manager, just want to let them know that Wilder's no good. Nope, definitely not. Bound to be found out. Nothing to see here. Move along. Probably some better prospects on the continent somewhere.

If you're a struggling PL team looking to avoid relegation, might I suggest a guy called Jos Luhukay. Class.
