Sabella on Late Kick Off

Interesting old footage of Sabella at the end of Late Kick Off. Either from a documentary or Look North recorded shortly after he joined. Clips including interviewing him and his wife at home in Mosborough (it is very quiet - no nightlife said his wife), showing the communication issues in training (Bergara trying to explain back heel to him) and also Bergara (in the dugout) unable to communicate by phone with Happy Harry (in the stand) during/before a game. Christ, if the pair of them couldn't use a phone is it any wonder they took us to the brink of relegation to the 4th division before Haslam fooked off.

Also showed MOTD footage of Sabella dancing his way to the touchline, before setting up Finnieston for his 1st goal for the Blades.

Interesting stuff, if only on for a few minutes. On i-Player in the morning they said.

That was my first ever away game on my own. I was 15 at the time caught the coach in Pond Street. I can remember fires being lit by the United fans on the away end which I seem to remember was wooden boards.
Unfortunately I cannot remember Sabellas goal but I can remember Stainrods.

The Argentinian International Daniel Pasarella was in their team. We were sat in the Laver Stand and were right behind him when he took the free kick that he scored direct from. You should have seen the ball move in the air - all over the place it was and no goalie would have saved that one.

Does anyone else remember this goal?

The reason I ask is that is an exact description of the goal he scored at Bloomfield Road in the 3-2 win (October '79) on a freezing cold night.
The Preston (Aug '78) game was the only game I missed that season due to it being Reading Festival week-end and my mate always described the Preston goal (his first for us) as a volley.

I noted the Maradona comment as well - ITV-esque in their research.

One other interesting thing was John Hendrie's comment afterwards that when he grew up he loved the Blades kit (it was the Admiral one with the white collar and black border to the red and white stripes) and that he asked his mother to go out and get one for him!

Went to both games. The Star came out with some blx that we would be World as well as European champs if we beat Rover Plate. Talk about pipe dream.

I still have the programme from the River Plate game.
It has Harry Haslam's autograph in it as well as Ubaldo Filliol, the Argentine 'keeper from the World cup. Of their squad the World Cup players were;

Passarella
Luque
Alonso
Ortiz
Lopes

Woody scored from the spot but I cannot remember if it was a soft pen or not. However, as I recall it was the only way we looked likely to score. The ref for the game was Clive Thomas so he probably felt sorry for us.

I can see now from the team picture on the front of the prog that both Jim Brown and Steve Conroy had perms in those days as did TK. Hilarious.

River Plate's scorers that night were Nolberto Alonso (wore number 1 shirt against Hungary in the 78 World Cup and scored but didnt feature much for the rest of the tournament) and Leopoldo Luque (played up front for Argentina throughout the tournament and scored 3 or 4 goals). Alonso's goal was the equaliser at the Lane End and it was from open play, he casually swung his left foot to meet a pass from outside the penalty box, keeper Jim Brown thought the shot was going over the bar but watched helplessly as the ball dipped and took a wicked swerve. Luque's goal was at the Kop end shooting powerfully that Brown hand a hand to but the ball hit the underside of the bar and into the net. After the game I was stunned to see Sabella and Passarella (the "Bobby Moore" of Argentina) being in the same car driving off from John Street (I assume they were going out for a meal or something like that) and it made me realise that they were close friends

The penalty award was for a trip on Sabella who was dribbling on the left of the box. Woody sent Ubaldo Fillol (Argentina's keeper in 78 and 82 World Cup) the wrong way with his spot kick

Sabella worked as number 2 to Passarella when he was manager . Sabella has gone to be a successful manager himself, after recovering from a heart attack.
