I get so mad when I think about the buildings that were taken from us in Sheffield! Some for legitimate reasons of course, or during the war, but others because it was deemed cheaper to demolish and replace with modernist shit!

The Grand Hotel too, whilst I don't actually mind the Fountain Precinct, why on Earth couldn't they keep the front section and build around it?

Don't even get me started on the vast swathes of stuff that went behind the Town Hall and around where the Crucible is now.
I’d guess cost. I don’t think there were many facade retention schemes in those days (apart from in London possibly) and it would have taken some serious engineering. It’s very commonplace down here now and I suspect that as the designs have become more standardised and more contractors have the experience of doing it, it’s a lot cheaper.

Problem is, some of these old churches were allowed to fall into such a state of disrepair that demolition was the only option. The methodist chapel on Sharrow Lane is another example (now a Tesco Express).

Here's the one that is the most criminal demolition IMO. What was Barclays Bank on the corner of Fitzalan Square. A road widening scheme was the reason, which has now been done away with.

When I invent time travel I'm going to go back and widen some city planner arseholes with my boot.

Absolutely criminal.

They just replace anything remotely interesting with beige cubes.

Even recent stuff that was a bit interesting and had some character goes. Eggbox, hole in the road etc.

Looks like they were building the City Hall when this was taken. Just look at how it once was, and this doesn't even show the Moor end. There's virtually nothing left.

I don't think half of that was down to the Luftwaffe either :(

You can see from the goals in the below video (starting from 56 seconds). Before the match, my dad and I met John, his wife and his mother in law to have a chat. It was agreed that we would meet again after the match. I was shocked and upset at Tudor's winning goal (I was sat in BLUT). After the game, my dad said "come on, we are going to see John". I said "No!" . My dad told me to calm down explaining to me that he is paid by his club to score goals etc. I then calmed down and still had a face on when we met John again. My dad told him what had happened, John laughed and said "sorry about that!"

No TC that day. Geoff Salmons was brilliant all match up and down the pitch, played like three men.
Bumped into a Geordie schoolmate outside after and he gave me some reyt stick.

Probably wrong as usual.

I remember walking round the corner from Leopold Street to find them demolishing it, in the dark, as if it was being done on the sly. I stopped with a small group of people, stayed until the Gaumont wreath came crashing down. Very sad. Saw Star Wars there, first film without my parents.
I don't remember the inside being as grand as that, but I bet most of it was still there behind some cladding. So good they replaced it with a glass box - to match the glass box they built across the road to replace another beautiful piece of architecture.
My mate (now no longer with us, and a Blade) was gaffering on the new Gaumont.
He consulted drawings, put a x on the floor, told digger driver, "Righto driver!"
Went through electric and water mains, cutting West st off on satdeh afternoon.

Can't help but miss 'im.

Yes, TC was serving his 3 match ban for being sent off in the Watney Cup semi final match at Peterborough. I remember a seasonticket holder next to me standing up from his seat to make way for the exit near full time and shouting "We are missing Currie"

I think it’s the extension to the Town Hall which was built in 1923 according to wiki.

Yes the Town Hall was extended then, but I meant the build in the bottom right which looks like the City Hall going up.

Didn't they also move [and eventually demolish] the old Church next to the Town Hall to build another extension, that was cancelled due to the war starting? Something like that anyway. So typical for Sheffield.

Fuck knows. I thought the curved building just top left of the site was Yorkshire House on the corner of Leopold Street and Barkers Pool but it’s changed so much I can’t really work it out.

Yes, St Paul’s Church was demolished. It became the Peace Gardens.

Pretty sure its the City Hall being built, which was started 1929 and finished 1932, so the photo must be 1930ish.

Yes, you’re right. As soon as I looked again I realised the ‘church’ I couldn’t identify was the fucking town hall.

The oval shaped building site is definitely the City Hall. Further down and opposite on Barkers Pool is the Gaumont Building. Bottom of Barkers pool to the right is the Town Hall and St Paul's is to it's right.

Cheers, yeah, I’d just worked it out.
