I’ve stayed off of the forum for a few hours to let all the knee-jerkers jerk away. I predicted this thread.

My take on it is that we wouldn’t create as many chances without him but we could do with someone else being on the end of them.

Not the only one guilty of missing chances today and IMO was 10 times better in all round play than McBurnie.

No mate I’m being realistic. Name the other clear cut chances he missed today? I remember one other chance he had where the keeper saved with his feet and one rocket which went just over the bar. But let’s just rip him to pieces eh? His has to finish that first half chance and the one v palace yes but let’s just ignore everything else he brings to the team
 
I'd put him in the Duffy role and revert back to last season's formation. I thought we looked a lot better when Sharp and Mousette were the front 2 and McGoldrick was a bit further back.

I counted 4 today, to add to your palace there was Bournemouth. I was a big defender of him early last year but this year he won’t have a striker getting 20+ goals to make up for it.

If you think the chance against palace was easy you know zero about football.
And why did you feel the need to defend him last year? He was superb from start to finish. Let me guess, the chance he missed against Leeds like so many other knee-jerkers
 
Sorry to say Mcgoldrick will miss 75% of chances due to he’s not a out and out striker, fantastic link up player. Can you see him scoring 10 in premier league? We have brought 10 new players in and Chris doesn’t yet know his best 11 but he will sort it Sooner rather than later. UTB!!

The person I quoted said palace, I don’t recall it just took his word for it as he was defending him. I defended him early on last season as the majority on here said he wasn’t prolific enough and missed too many chances. His overall contribution was worth it as he had a prolific striker next to him. We don’t have that at this level which is why my view is different.
 
Was it a bad miss or a good save? I’ve not seen it back as the sky highlights didn’t seem to think showing any of our chances were worth showing.

Keepers are better in this league. Most teams do well to get someone scoring ten.

I thought Didsy had a good game. I think we would have created less without him. However, from his and about half a dozen other chances I would expect us normally to score at least one.

Billy being sent off was as big as that miss. We, and Billy in particular, were looking very dangerous at that point and I fancied us to get a couple more chances

There weren't 4 chances he should have scored today. 1 he should have scored (1-on-1), there was 1 other chance that a decent Premier League striker would have scored (half volley). Against Palace he had one he should have buried (the sitter in front of goal, half volley) . Against Bournemouth, there were 2 chances that I'd have been surprised if Vardy had scored.

I'm not ignoring the other part of his game. Simple matter is, he's not clinical enough to be an out and out striker. If he was we'd have had at least 3 more pts than we've got now.

Sorry but it isn't irrelevant. It's very relevant, those things you mention help us to create chances and therefore in theory score goals. Didzy needs to be more clinical no doubt, but it doesn't mean that all of the good things he does should be ignored.

Ideally I'd like to see him in the no. 10 role with two strikers ahead of him in games like today but it looks like Wilder will favour more solidity in midfield so it may not happen.

I think you are underestimating what is expected at this level.

I don't think that's me. You seem to be suggesting McGoldrick should have scored 4 today, once against Palace and one or two against Bournemouth. So 6-7 goals. Which would have him as one of the leagues top scorers... I'm sure one of our stattos could tell you his XG & how it relates to other strikers in the league & I doubt it's anything like as poor as you're making out.

No, strikers miss chances and I accept that. He should have at least some goals though even one.

It’s different how many clear cut chances we would get and how we would get punished for not taking them. Although yes, if you are a player who can take those chances it doesn’t matter what league.

Goldie is the perfect in the hole player, love him but he can't be the front line striker.

Iv said in previous post tonight I don’t even mind him up front when we have a lead. He contributes well in other ways and when we’re not desperate for a goal I really appreciate his talents.

If say, Mousset or Robinson played instead of McGoldrick I don't believe they'd get anything like the chances falling to them that McGoldrick does.

Crucially, what he offers between both boxes is so crticial to how we play that I'm really not sure that dropping him is the answer. Maybe the answer is returning to the same system as last year, but with McGoldrick playing the Duffy role?

i agree on that & is why its conflicting thing because on 1 hand he was 1 of influential players on the pitch & id say best performance of the season but then he could have got 4 with 2 good chances & 2 sitters he missed

What has being player of the year got to do what starting players that are playing well? Freeman was playing well, and was dropped. I love Wilder, but he definitely has his favourites and can apply inconsistent standards and be stubborn in his selections at times. In our first season in the Championship, he dropped Duffy and Sharp, and the more we became exasperated with them not playing, the more entrenched he seemed to be in his position. Duffy and Sharp being instrumental in getting us promoted last year, proved that stance to be wrong.

The ‘flat 3’ with Lundstram feels worryingly familiar to me, and Wilder’s defensive post-match comments about tactics give a similar sense of stubbornness.

I’ll say it again for the over-sensitive bedwetters. I love Wilder, yes he knows far more than me etc etc.
