They are opening the canal eventually between Chesterfield and Kiveton ,this might be a faster option.

The Norwood Tunnel could be widened to include HS3 and then we'd be sorted for quick access to away games at Stavely Miners Welfare.

Might be a daft question, (and I really feel your frustration) but why go from Sheffield to Doncaster to Kings Cross when you can go direct from Sheffield to St Pancras and in less time?

20mins from Sheffield to Donny then 1hour 25 mins to Kings Cross. 2hours Sheffield to St Pancras on the fastest trains.

Travelling via Donny from Sheffield to King X is STILL quicker AND cheaper than direct from Sheff to St Pancras so the sensible option. You can be, depending on carrier ( Grand Central), in Kings X in 1hr 30 from Donny, add around 30 mins from Sheff to Donny, still in London faster and a lot cheaper than direct from Sheff. No brainer for me, ive done it often.

No direct train last Saturday from Sheffield due to works on the line. But also, it is a quicker train too from Donny (1h 40m)

Prices? Saturday times? And dont use Trainline its no cheaper than the carriers website. East Midland trains are a lot more expensive than Grand Central, LNER, or Hull Trains and slower.

We was at Earls Court in just over 2hrs last Saturday from Donny. About 25 mins on Picadilly line from Kings X.

Feel for the guy missing the match due to the train failure. Id have been just as livid as he was. I'm quite fortunate, I can get a lift to Donny sometimes. Failing that we've booked a taxi before, but not a cheap option.

Oh dear , have I hurt your feelings? He asked if it was a silly question and I answered honestly. If he"d asked me in the pub, id have said the same. To me its a no brainer, and thats honest.
Trust me, take it from someone thats commuted up and down to the smoke on a regular basis, and a couple of more posters by the looks of it, it IS quicker and cheaper via Donny. No point being selective with your examples from trainline, its not how I plan my travel arrangements. Now you carry on with the way you plan your away days, and i"ll carry on with ours. I note you swerved the price question.

From Sheff to London tomorrow quickest is via Donny because of engineering works. Otherwise its via New St and Northampton and 3 changes, will take you 10hrs and cost £95 so none starter, yes? Now if im planning it, its 33 mins to Donny, then Grand Central to Kings X and 1hr 1/2. Obviously plan it so hardly any waiting time. The key is in the planning, which anyone does for an away day. Its not difficult.
Do try not to get offended on behalf of others, its why this country is going to shit. Im quite sure if the OP thinks im a cunt hell soon tell me. Ive got big shoulders.

Six of one and half a dozen of the other by the looks of things tomorrow. But it's all immaterial regarding the original question because last Saturday as far as I'm aware the only choice was via Donny because of engineering works. My preference is to book the direct train to St Pancras because the connection has let me down in the past, and if you book it via the Megabus website it is cheaper than anybody or anywhere else. Failing that, get the bus to Woodall village, walk to the services, and hitchhike.

True it does depend on which train or trains you get on but bear in mind the fastest direct train from Sheffield to ST Pancras on the Midland route takes just over 2 hours. The fastest direct train from Doncaster to Kings X is around 1h 30mins despite the distance being a bit further from London if ever there was a reason to electrify the Midland line this is it.

It's far from certain HS2 will ever get out of Euston never mind to Birmingham. I would have thought the money would be better spent upgrading the existing routes to the north and midlands. HS2 will only carry passengers but like it or not we will soon have to go back to moving freight mainly by rail.

The amount of money to save 25 minutes on a journey from london to manchester is staggering,your right improve the infrastructure we have .

When trains are stuck for hours close to a station, there should be some method of allowing passengers to get off and walk to the station. They say it's too dangerous, but it would only be dangerous if there were other trains on the line. They could change the signal to prevent trains coming in the other direction while passengers get off. Also, without a platform it would be a bit of a drop to the rail bed, but trains could carry a set of steps for such an eventuality.

If the OP could have made it to Meadowhall, he could have got a private cab to Donny and caught his train easily enough. It must have been frustrating to be so near a station but forced to stay on the train.

Wouldn’t fancy being the staff member having to walk 200 people up a railway track.

Scrap HS2 and spend the money connecting Hull to Liverpool. With Sheffield plugging into that along with the North East. There’s a huge political appetite for this up here. No one wants HS2.
