Trains: Did anybody else miss the Chelsea game?

Doncaster to Kings Cross is faster and cheaper that Sheffield to St Pancras so yes a daft question.

Not sure you can beat the 2.01 hours, went down Friday afternoon from Sheffield for £19.
U know I'm gunna stop buying return tickets, wasting money, never check on London trains.

True it does depend on which train or trains you get on but bear in mind the fastest direct train from Sheffield to ST Pancras on the Midland route takes just over 2 hours. The fastest direct train from Doncaster to Kings X is around 1h 30mins despite the distance being a bit further from London if ever there was a reason to electrify the Midland line this is it.

But it's all immaterial regarding the original question because last Saturday as far as I'm aware the only choice was via Donny because of engineering works. My preference is to book the direct train to St Pancras because the connection has let me down in the past, and if you book it via the Megabus website it is cheaper than anybody or anywhere else. Failing that, get the bus to Woodall village, walk to the services, and hitchhike.

Not had a problem personally, but have noticed they do get cancelled now and again.

It has happened to me twice, although it was coming the opposite way, the delay being at Donny and the train to Sheffield. Both times it was a Friday evening, both times it was a Sheffield Derby at the Lane, both times I had to leg it up Shoreham Street, both times I made it just as they were kicking off, both times it was a 0-0 draw. Phew.

I know a lad from darn Sarf who hitched all over to watch United, so perhaps if you had a bit more commitment like that lad, you wouldn't have had to leg it up Shoreham Street.

Cheeky! Can I just say both times were due to other commitments. The first time I'd gone from work to hospital for a painkilling injection, then trained and tubed it to King's Cross. I actually missed my scheduled train by one minute so had to pay £100 for another one.

The second time I was doing a lecture at The University of Surrey in Guildford and had to stop myself from talking about myself (difficult) in order to get all my pre-booked trains and connections etc. It went like clockwork right up until the last train with its delay.

Still, that hitchhiker kid sounds like a top Blade - he should write a book!

The ticket inspector got to us literally as we were pulling into Retford last week. I had to get past him to get off ,I did have a ticket on our young uns phone anyway.

Not sure if this has been said but if you booked your train tickets on credit card, you may able to claim incidental expenses for stuff you’d booked and missed under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. Worth a look.

Writing this now as I'm only just calming down and wondered if anybody else was affected?

On Saturday we boarded the 9:25 Train, Sheffield to Doncaster so that we could get the 10:18 direct train to Kings Cross.
We departed Sheffield and had been traveling only a few minutes before a loud bang was heard below us and the train came to a stop. After sitting there for 10mins the conductor came on the tannoy saying something had tripped the electrics and we couldn't get the engine restarted in the 1st carriage... We're about 0.3 miles from Meadowhall.

Turns out a side panel had flew off and hit the wheels and tripped the electrics, but it was lodged tight between the wheels which prevented the train from moving. They realised what had happened and knew the train was going nowhere within 15mins of us stopping.

An engineer was called with some bolt croppers to cut us free.. 'he'll be 15 minutes' was the tannoy announcement.

Anyway, long story short, we got back to Sheffield station at 12:30 after setting off at 9:25. We didn't even reach Meadowhall. They wouldn't let us exit the train, they had no contingency plan to get the passengers off and onto the multiple trains that stopped next to us to wave on the way past. They never sent a couple of buses to even get us to Meadowhall, we were literally stuck for 3hrs.

Back in Sheffield train station, none of the black cab drivers would take us to Doncaster in hope of us getting the 12:55 train to get us in Kings Cross @ 2:40. We tried Uber - 2mins away... 10mins later it hadn't arrived so we sacked it off and headed to the Howard to drown our sorrows.

£60 train tickets (complaint in but no response as yet) + £30 match ticket down the drain.

Was anybody else on the same train or one of the ones behind that were affected?

We took a train from Dore (free parking - unlike Sheffield) at 8.28 which was supposed to get us into London at 11.32. We thought we'd be changing in Sheffield for Doncaster, but surprisingly the train we were on was going to Norwich. We pondered over changing trains in Sheffield as we'd normally switch there for Doncaster, however, when I looked at our itinerary it didn't say anything about changing in Sheffield for Doncaster. So we stayed put on that train. Thank God we did by the sound of it! The train went into Sheffield, then back out again the same way, via Nottingham and on to Grantham. According to our ticket, we should have changed at Grantham to get on the East Coast line to London, but the train was delayed significantly. I can't remember where or why exactly, but I recall that the conductor told us to stay on until Peterboro then change there as the connections were more frequent than Grantham. It arrived in London an hour late, a total journey of over 4 hours and we were annoyed at being so late. But fortunately we still had time to get to the game.

I've known this before at weekends. You just can't rely on the trains to get you to where you're going on time. I think I'd leave even earlier next time to be sure of getting there. 4 hours plus to get from Sheffield to London is ridiculous when you can normally do it in just over 2 hours. But weekends are a nightmare for train travel. We thought it must be engineering works or suicides, that's often the reason.
