As a contemporary of Crooks', I would just like to add that the shit that bloke had to put up with in his playing days was utterly disgusting. The way he dealt with it and addressed it, was nothing short of amazing. People talk about Regis' influence on the game for black players but I assure you Crooks' contribution was greater. If I didn't know all that I do about his past experiences I would also think he was a bit of a prat for his punditry, but I do so I don't.

I don't think the two go hand in hand though.

I've sympathy and respect for what all black players have had to endure in this country, particularly in the 70s and 80s, and still to this day both here and probably more so abroad in the modern day.

I dont think that excuses poor and ignorant punditry in the slightest though.

You could be right about a new intolerance for rubbish punditry. As per comments elsewhere on this thread about Benjamin Bloom, there's so much informed stuff out there from amateurs, these days, and so many platforms to publish it on, that you'd hope it would help raise the bar for those who are paid. Pundits shaming other pundits might be one end of this wedge.

I'll leave Robbie to you, though, Copes. Afraid I find him completely unlistenable. Shrill, rude, hectoring, up himself. Which is a shame, as I used to love 606. Haven't been able to stick it for more than 5-10 mins at a time, in the years since he took it over. Happy to accept that this might be my problem, rather than his!

I can totally understand why people don’t like him but I think that if you can get through his self promotion, based on his insecurities and actual desire to be better, he makes some good points. Kelly Cates and Ian Wright were a better partnership on 606

Having listened to his podcast with Mathew Sayeed and Freddie Flintoff I completely changed my opinion on him, like you say, very insecure, not the brightest both things he admits but he does try very hard at his job, he has said pundits who don't put the time in and research the clubs they are covering get found out and their opinions not worthy, I think he's right too

An excellent podcast, one of the best, shame that Freddie is too busy now but on the other hand maybe a good thing that it ended at the top

No, that's what I meant. It's something Chomsky's talked about. People read things like scientific studies, or scholarly articles, and they don't really understand them so they think to themselves "That's what smart people do, they talk nonsense in really fancy wording". And then they try to recreate that not knowing that anyone a little bit smart will wonder where the content is. That's one theory of how you end up with comments like "quite basic for the Premier League". That what he thinks intelligence sounds like, but everyone who understands the topic realises it's utterly meaningless. That's how smart sounds so saying things in that way must be smart.

I know what you mean but I think a certain allowance has to be made in the same way allowance is given to ex service people with PTSD. What I witnessed on that night in York was absolutely disgusting. He was even getting it from his own players. Transpose that across many years and I am surprised he is still alive. But I do understand where you are coming from.
