Ageism in football journalism?

Mr Shields is fond of reminding us just how "old" (or young?) Wilder is, and does it regularly. A quote from his recent report on yesterday's game v Leicester:

"Harvey Barnes' strike, which settled this frantic but fractious contest, was labelled "magical" by both the 51-year-old and Brendan Rodgers, his rival across the technical area".

Can someone tell me what the relevance of Wilder being 51 has got to do with anything?

Does being 51 make Wilder's achievements all the more remarkable? What about the week before when the 51 year old Wilder faced the 72 year old Roy Hodgson?

I just think this is an irrelevant statistic and has no relevance to the rest of the report. So why mention it?

It's like him being described as "the former Halifax manager" and later on in the same piece in order to avoid repetition "the ex-Northampton boss".

Anyway, he's 52 next month so it will be all change.

Sloppy talentless tosspots. They obviously come from the school that populates tv quiz/reality/talent shows when contestants are asked their age. “I’m 76 years old Simon” well congratufuckinglations for still being alive mate. My dad is 87 and a) he doesn’t expect a round of applause for making it through breakfast each day and b) would find it deeply offensive to have any aspect of his achievements somehow weighted due to his age.

The thing that annoys me about a lot of old folk, (and i'm one before you ask), is the ones when asked their age say "I'll be 76 NEXT", or whatever their age is, +1. They must consider it a badge of honour or something. Things don't change much do they, ask a 5year old their age and they will proudly say nearly 6. It only reverses when you are 40 and fancying a 30year old, then you suddenly become 35!.

If you were comparing him to Lampard it would be a good thing to mention from the perspective of Wilder actually having experience and having to work hard to get to be a PL manager. Also when compared to Woy it’s relevant as it shows the experience differential between the 2. Apart from that it’s bollocks.

It's a quick and easy way of making your writing appear less repetitive whilst also dropping in a little fact to give the impression you know what you're talking about. No, it doesn't really work but that's mostly because they aren't writing anything interesting to begin with.
