Bang on. None of Deanos moves were his choice, I can assure anyone of that.
 
Deano was absolute quality on the park. Best centre forward, winger, and attacking midfielder at the club all at the same time.

Only problem was that when Deane went out wide and beat his man and put in a fantastic cross into the middle...he wasn't in the box waiting for it! If he could have got on the end of his own crosses, we would have been lethal up top.

It was a pleasure to watch Deano play for us, and he would always be my first choice centre forward in my Blades dream team. The others could scrap it out to be his partner.

Just as a further thought, I always thought Bryson was very underrated and could derliver a terrific cross into the box. But even then he wasn't nearly as good as Deane was out on the wing!

A lot of people are referred to as legends when they are nothing of the sort. However, Deano was and still is a Blades legend. He was the real deal.

Now my understanding is Blades of that era HATE Leeds significantly more than blades of more recent times. Some as much as the pigs, some more. Did that not really spoil your view of him? Did you not go mental when he moved to Leeds directly? Same with Currie?

Players I consider Legends, had they moved to the pigs in a “upward” move directly I’m not sure I would consider them a legend.

I’m not saying he shouldn’t be just looking for some perspective on it as you have to admit without being there it is puzzling.

My recollection is that when Deano was sold in 1993, many people thought that sealed relegation (and were right) and there was annoyance that he went to Leeds, as in addition to the fact that we hate them they had finished below us in the previous season. People's anger was more reserved for Reg Brealey than Deano, I think, as he was the one who sanctioned the deal (when Bassett was against it).

But Deano was certainly not popular the following season. When he scored for Leeds at the Kop end the following season, he ran the length of the field towards the Leeds fans to celebrate. That was ill judged. As he did this, a good number of our fans sang "Deano is a Wanker".

He's one of my favourite players of all time, did tremendous things for United in his first spell, and seems like a really nice bloke - people who meet him are always positive about him and he comes across well in the media. It is perhaps odd, though, that he's so popular given he was sold twice by us, was happy to go, and each time it set us back years.

bizarre?? you're in the wrong place mate. Legend is a word bandied around a great deal but Deano is and always will be a full on bona fide Blades legend. they should have a bloody statue of the guy in the car park ffs.

It is bizzare, but a lot of the above posters have kindly explained it a bit for a bit of context.

i'll let you off seeing as you weren't there ;)
very few players have the proper legend status. my definition of legend is the player who comes on and instantly 30000 people stand up and believe we are going to win; at least score a goal just because he is in the team. the opposition noticeably buckle. Billy has the same effect.. the crowd are suddenly up for it and you can see their players thinking 'oh shit the bastards have woken up'

I suppose the status of legend has had to change for modern audiences. Players I would have considered legends or greats would not meet your standards or definition.

As an example James Beattie was a great striker, he would tick those boxes you mention but he was only here 60 games or so before being snapped up. If we had Deane or Tony Currie now how long would they last? 1 season? 2 maybe?

legend is a tough classification.. that's why it is overused imho ;)

Agree totally he was from the era when the blades won a corner it was almost as good as a penalty in that we were destined to score. Anyone remember the chant "ooo its a corner, ooo its a corner" ??

me and my mate were talking about this. a corner used to be a big deal .. now it is just a big mess and you lose the ball
 
I would never dream of fact-checking Deano, but there is something not quite right where whoever’s done the video keeps showing him in a completely different kit. As for some of the match-specific details, like the 2-0 derby win “in the cup”, chalk this as another one of odd misremembering by players/managers...

Missed this thread first time around. I loved (still do!) Brian Deane. He was unreal. Went from 3rd division to first division and played for England, all at our club (which away from the playing side was a joke aHe had an aura around him, and as someone posted he could get the crowd off their feet.

I remember when he missed a couple of months of the 91/92 season with glandular fever, and his come back game was against pigs at the Lane. I was giving pigs loads of shit saying now he was back wed beat them, fearing the worst as they were a good team at the time. Deano terrorised them, just bullied them. In that single game he pretty much finished Chris Woods career with the battering he gave him,finished by sticking the winner between his legs. Deanos face after scoring showed exactly what it meant. He lifted United so much and was much better than he ever got credit for.

Yes there’s a lot of misremembering I think. We lost 5-2 at Arsenal & drew 2-2 in the cup at Wigan! As well as the derby match being in the league. Deano’s a good mate of my brother & myself, a great bloke who still comes to the lane regularly and loves the club.

I think he probably meant to say league but said cup because he’d been talking about it previously. If you’re under 50 that won’t make much sense, if you’re over 50, you’ll know exactly what I mean.

Yeah and why wouldn’t he remember the away goal at Hillsboro in the 1-3 that was scored wearing that shirt. Which had nothing to do with Glyn Hodges. Unless he means Paul Rogers.

He scored a header from a Hodges cross at the Sty in another game.

Whitehouse and Davison twice scored in that 3-1 win.

I suppose it works both ways. For me the only games I really remember from that season are the derby games, the Liverpool and Leeds home games, and if he’d have not mentioned one of those and instead just talked about the numerous other games that season I probably wouldn’t have thought anything of his comments. But as I’ve said before on the Kenny book thread, it does seem that there are surprisingly frequent memory lapses when people in football try and recall details you’d expect them to not get wrong because they were involved.

There’s still excuse for the video producers, for a video where they are specifically asking players to talk about their memories for one particular shirt, to include an image of him in a completely different one. This one isn’t the Arsenal match he was talking about, but at least it’s the right shirt.
