Prem clubs paying Living Wage

In news today that only 4 teams in prem committed to paying a living wage for staff, Liverpool/Everton/West Ham and Chelsea

Anyone any ideas if this was based on last year and if not I’m guessing we are one of the 16

I know legally we only have to pay minimum wage etc, just thought with money that’s in the game and clubs so essential to the local communities it would be something everyone signed up to

Completely agree. There are no excuses with the PL cash coming to the club for this not to be done.

I thought United had already done the trick of binning off outsourcing the lowest wage members of staff - stewards, catering staff - so it might just be that they haven’t thought so seek the accreditation.

Up until Wilder / Knill coming , i would not have paid some of the players with mangy Toast .

Any of those four clubs should hang their heads in shame, but especially Liverpool and Chelsea. Everton have recently chosen to spend big, and West Hame are catching up, but like SUFC, they should be pillars of their communities and lead the way in paying wages that are way above the recognised minimum wage.

I appreciate that for some clubs the relegation/promotion issues can impact on budgets, but for any club who manages to achieve the status of Prem club they should be able to factor in the type of wage structure that offers employees a decent, liveable wage.

I read it correctly Scooter. My point is that, even those clubs that are accredited, are still in receipt of millions of pounds (inclusive sponsorship etc) and therefore able to pay those they employ an above average wage.

I disagree with the idea that governments should tell people what they can and can not pay their employees, with the exception of big corporations.
But this isn’t an argument for General Blades Chat.

So it’s half a story until someone does some proper research.

Well you did kind of start it.....

If government doesn’t set a minimum wage that allows people to survive then the taxpayer has to pick up the slack in increased benefit spending.

By which you mean the widely reported examples of people who barely manage to get by? Not too far from United is a food bank (at least one that I'm aware of), so please don't attempt to defend your comments by dismissing the concerns of those of us who pay attention to the world around us.

There is a difference between the living wage which I think is around £10 per hour and the minimum wage which is around £7 plus an hour less if you are under 25. The point is the four clubs mentioned at the top are paying the living wage while the rest of the league are paying the lesser statutory minimum wage so the four clubs mentioned are more progressive. It's a question for society rather than football. Some might prefer to work at their local football club than in a bar or hotel say for a slightly lower wage. But all clubs especially in the PL should be paying the living wage.

To get listed on the LWF website you need to get accreditation, which then means they keep a check on the business and make sure they continue paying the Living Wage

Yeah, my point is that just because an organisation hasn’t sought the accreditation, it doesn’t mean they aren’t actually paying the living wage.

I can completely believe this. I know a lad who worked at the academy at Man City as a Sports Scientist. He was paid absolute peanuts and expected to work 60 hour weeks with the feint hope that it would further his career. I'm sure United are doing the exact same to some degree as it seems rife in football.

I think football clubs can get away with it because it's such an attractive and glamorous job proposition. You've only got to look at some of the jobs we've advertised over the summer that were paying below average for those particular roles, but people will do it.

West Ham pay ten quid an hour and they have trouble getting staff. Bert knows the woman who does the recruitment.
