CW selection headache

To be honest, I think some of these McGoldrick (and Fleck) omissions are revealing people who didn't attend or at least closely watch our games towards the end of last season.

Or those who just...... don't know much about football.

Hendo
Basham Egan JOC
Baldock Norwood Fleck Stevens
McGoldrick Robinson
McBurnie

Subs: Verrips/Other, Jagielka, Osborn, Lundstram, Freeman, Mousset, Sharp

Spare: Moore, Stearman, Bryan, K.Freeman, Ravel, Duffy

And that's before we sign Matt Phillips anyone else.

Our squad is basically too strong.

I’d be tempted by that but possibly with Jags for Bash to remain tight at the back.

McGoldie and Robinson have to play from what I’ve seen (all be it not loads) of Pre-Season where they’ve really got a good understanding of one another.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see Sharp start ahead of McBurnie given his recent arrival.

Henderson
Basham - Egan - O'Connell
Baldock - Norwood - Fleck - Stevens
Freeman
Sharp - McBurnie

Subs: Moore, Jags, Robinson, Osborn, McGoldrick, Morrison OR Duffy, Lundstram

Attack 'em, have a right go and show these so called experts what we're all about - and if we get done now and again because of our expansive style / approach then I'll accept that . . . . . . Just so long as we have a right fucking go, get at the opposition and don't sit back and invite teams on (give THEM something to worry about as well!) . . . . . . . . . COME ON YOU RED AND WHITE WIIIZZZAAARRRDDDSSS!!!!!!
I agree.

CHAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGE !

New signings will be ahead of them.
Who are they?

Osborn? Has played one game in preseason at LWB.
Morrison? Hasn’t played enough to warrant a start ahead of fleck or Lundstram.
New signing? Would be left out for the same reason as I left mcburnie out.

Edit - forgot about Freeman I see him as a 10. He may start for Lundstram but I don’t see us going with a no 10 vs Bournemouth away.

.................McBurnie Robinson
..... ........... ..... Ravel
.........Stevens Freezy Norwood Baldock

Bournemouth away should be a game we should target as potentially winnable, especially with the injuries they have as well. For me 3 attackers play, whether that is 2 9's and a 10 or 2 10's and a 9. Home form alone doesn't keep us up and this is one we should go for, no reason we can't go there looking for 3 points with a positive attacking side.

I think the team at Bournemouth is nailed on to be.....

———Henderson———
——Jagielka Egan JOC——
Baldock—————Stevens
——Norwood Fleck——
—Mcgoldrick—Robinson—
———McBurnie———

The one change i could potentially see is Lundstram starting if we wanted to go for a flat 3 in midfield with one of the forwards making way (Probably McBurnie).

Billy will start at home against Palace the week after.

If be amazed if we don't start with that team and if we don't that will eventually be our front three

Man management. You give the opportunity to the players who got us up. If it turns out they’re not good enough none of the other players have an issue about them being dropped. Dropping them without giving them a chance so you can accommodate your new signings can start to turn players against you.

No, you don’t do that at all. You select the team you think the best to get a result, having watched them all carefully in pre-season and training. If you’ve broken the club transfer repeatedly you’ve been buying replacements; not understudies.

Do you really think Tufty has spent tens of millions on substitutes?

I’m sorry but we’re moving on. Some favourites are going to be left behind. We haven’t got enough points to spare to givemfirstgo.

I like this line up. My only reservation would be, that Norwood has not had a great pre-season form wise. Not sure what the solution is?

Where posters have suggested who will be on the bench, the players available to Wilder are looking awesome. When was the last time we had a problem like this.

I can see the team evolving to this:

Henderson
Basham Egan O'Connell
Baldock Norwood Fleck Stevens
Morrison
Robinson McBurnie

Subs: Moore, Jagielka, Osborn, Freeman, McGoldrick, Sharp, Mousset

I appreciate Ravel is a wildcard but I'd Wilder gives him the right environment and his attitude is correct he's a potential 50m player.

This x1000

Surprised how many people leaving him out of the whole matchday squad, calling him a "backup" or "a spare" when its evident he has top 6 gifted talent.

Sure he lost his way for a while but he's one of those players who can change a game in a split second. Don't see how people see him just as injury cover...

They are worried that he doesn’t kick it long, hard or high enough.

Yes, how they perform in training will have a bearing but you seem to be suggesting he does what Jokanovic did at Fulham. I doubt we’ll finish the season with the same starting 11 that we begin with.

I’m amused at the S2 thinking (it never lets me down). The train of thought appears to be:

1. We need 7-8 new players to stand any chance in the Premiership.

2. Constant fretting, knee-jerking and foot-stamping at perceived lack of progress in gerrinemin.

3. Disbelief and jubilation (quite rightly) in equal measure as we smash our transfer record three times.

4. Excitement at the quality of the new signings.

5. Come the first fixture, treat multi-million pound recruits, obviously brought in to significantly improve the team, as spare parts. Pick the players they were recruited to replace because they ‘deserve a chance’. Leavemallontbench.

Odd place, S2. Very odd.

It’s just my opinion on the starting line up for our first game. As I’ve said, we won’t finish the season with the same line up, the new players will be integrated into the team. I’ll be surprised if there are more than three of the new players in the starting line up at Bournemouth.
There’s no point having a protracted debate about it because we’ll find out in just over a week.

Jags will be first name on the sheet, its a toss up whether its Egan or Bash who makes way for him. It will be difficult accepting Billy making way as it would seem to be the right thing to do for him to lead the team out. Maybe Wilder's reserving this for our home opener which would be OK.

Sentimental Bladey Claptrap.

People might have to come to terms with, just for example, Sharp, Didzy, Fleck and Norwood not being automatic choices. You can only have fourteen clubs in your bag.

Either we want to evolve, progress and establish our club or we treat the season as a prolonged series of testimonials for ‘deserving’ favourites.

I know which it should be, but this is the strange world of S2, the land that time forgot.

Happily, Tufty is a professional so the sentimental bollocks will be ignored in favour of a hard-headed quest for precious points.

How the f*** is lundstrum getting mentioned for a starting place in the prem? Not fit to lace Coutts' boots, not fit to lace Duffy's boots, no where near good enough for the top tier!!! Surely wilder learnt this particular lesson at the start of last season!!!

Different kind of player.....Coutts and Duffy has more class and are better passers
But Lundstrum is quicker, a much better tackler and far more energy than Coutts or Duffy.
Attack wise Coutts is better.....defence wise Lundstrum is better.
At present I suspect Lundstrum will be used more in away games than home games.

Another point not really mentioned anywhere is that
Most managers seem to make their substitutions on the 85 to 89 minute mark, so substitutes hardly get any game time.
However I reckon that Wilder will often make his substitutions on 60 or 65 minutes.
Suspect Wilder will use the squad meaning our subs will still get decent game time.

Everyone of those players would have been told exactly the same thing (even McBurnie) that there are no guarantees of an automatic place in the team. But what CW has given us is a bloody good bench and quality back up in every position. The difference is we don’t have to rely on “utility players” anymore to pull us through tight situations. I think we’ve got every position covered with maybe the exception of the Norwood “quarterback” role.

Hardly. You conveniently omitted the first sentence of my post:

"My understanding is that its only Morrison who needs bringing up to speed so I expect to see Mousset & McBurnie up front with Robinson behind them".

Silly boy. Try again.

Just a quick note on your comment about Coutts being a better attacker than Lundstram. Since our return to the Championship Coutts managed 1 goal and zero assists, Lundstram managed 3 goals and 4 assists*. Coutts was never a particularly strong attacker or defender, he was however, excellent in the middle of the pitch where you need someone to keep hold of possession. He played this role better than anyone I've ever seen in a United shirt.

*this isn't me arguing that Lundstram is/was better than Coutts.

On the topic of Lundstram being a defensive player I completely disagree. Wilder doesn't even play him in a defensive position, he always plays him in front of Norwood. I've said it before but Lundstram is good at attacking the box, watch our first goal in the friendly against Barnsley and tell me that's the sign of someone who is defensive minded.

Yes, quite deliberately, because it wasn’t nauseating, sentimental Bladey Claptrap...

My starting 11 would be
GK- Hendo
RWB - Baldock
RCB - Bash
CB - Egan
LCB - O’Connell
LWB - Stevens
CM - Norwood
CM - Fleck
CAM - Freeman
ST - Robinson
ST - Sharp

I fully expect the team to evolve over the season but this is what I’d go with to start off. Never liked the flat 3 in midfield and I think against teams that can be weak at the back we should stick with what got us in here in the first place and start with a CAM. Going for Sharp over Didzy cos I worry that Robbo and Didzy together we may not have that prolific finish. Eventually though Id expect to see McBurnie providing that. So good to have all these options and whatever the starting lineup I feel we have a chance of all 3 points.

Henderson
Basham Egan O'Connell

I appreciate Ravel is a wildcard but I'd Wilder gives him the right environment and his attitude is correct he's a potential 50m player.

That will see players costing total fees of approximately £20m routinely left on the bench. Highly unlikely. Tufty hasn’t paid close to £10m for a Moose to occupy a benchy habitat.

Interesting that a lot are missing out freeman (Luke)in there starting XI. I think he will play a big part. It’s very exciting to finally have competition for places and our bench will show how much strength we now have all over the squad.
