Neal Maupay

Anyone signing Maupay now is a massive gamble. He's had next to no pre-season games, been sent away by Brentford twice. He won't be match fit, and the season starts in 3 weeks.

Not really...just means he’s probably 2 or 3 weeks behind schedule regards pre-season sharpness and getting up to 100% fitness.
A club can easily just use him as sub in the early weeks, which I think most clubs would have done anyway even if he was 100% fit and sharp.

Be an expensive sub for a month.

You could say that about Olly Norwood last season. By all accounts he had limited pre season games at Brighton but that didn’t work out too badly did it? Massive gamble? It’s a 38 game season.

Think that’s the issue.

The interested PL clubs seem to see his as mainly a future prospect with big potential
Believe they are only be intending to initially use him mainly as sub.
That’s why they don’t want to pay 20million for someone who will initially be a sub player.

I believe that if Maupay wants regular games then his best choice is probably us.
I suppose his big concern is that we are one of the favourites for relegation.
So joining us could be 1 step forward 2 steps backward.
Also there’s the other option where he could stay in London playing every week as a crowd favourite at Brentford
And give them 1 final season to try to acquire promotion.

If Villa we’re going to strike a deal would it not have already happened? No difference, is there?

I mean - if that post is correct and he’s in an airport saying Brentford are letting him leave, it’s looking like an agreement has been reached. I can see it being villa - what with Smith there and us having signed Mousset.

To me once the agent started getting involved and turning it into a bidding war it was looking less likely he’d come here.

We can offer him a greater chance at first team football but ultimately villas wage structure looks a lot different to ours, so I’d imagine money will talk and his agent will get him 10-20k per week more from villa or an established PL club than we are able to meet.

There can be no accusations of lack of ambition. We’re clearly willing to match Brentford’s asking price, so at the end of the day it’s down to the player and there’s not much you can do other than set the case out and hope for the best in the end - imo

I understand your view. I just think there’s a twist in the tail here. Just instinct. NITFK.

I’m quite sure, though, that either Maups or OMB will be here before the big kick-off. Tufty went public on breaking the record twice and soon. He must be pretty confident to be so outspoken. There’s only two candidates to oust the Moose and we all know who they are.

Personally I’d like all three but I’m a greedy Blade.

I agree there is no lack of ambition. I suspect even hardened cynics might have to give the owners a bit of credit before long...

Fingers crossed. You might well be right - if it was simply down to money I imagine a deal could already have been done by now

Wilder is persuasive and from what the Brentford fans have said he’s rejected the bigger offers before for what he considers the best career path before.

I suppose my POV was mcburnie was a more physical presence and hence a different option to having LM and NM.

I’d hope so - the backing so far has been of a level I’m pleased to see - and it’s has to be an exciting time with what wilder has managed to produce with the more limited resources available to date.

People talk about Mousset being big and strong, maybe he is.

To me, McBurnie gives us the lad that runs in, when the corner kick is in swinging, and powers through defenders like they are made of balsa wood, to head home the winner.

Mousset can maybe do the same job, I honestly don't know.

I get the gut feeling that Maupay is now, "nice to have", and we wouldn't say no, but maybe CW and AK have put pieces in to the jigsaw puzzle that means that the tall, strong, powerful, fast striker, is now all we need? (again, Mousset may be this person, and I am totally wrong, again!!).

That’s kind of how I see it too.

Mcburnie would offer the type of player who’d revel at getting onto the end of a Norwood free kick / corner but is also technical and looks to be a brilliant finisher on top.

We don’t seem to have that element to the squad right now but perhaps mousset could bring some of what maupay was eyed up for with pace and movement and technical ability?? Only wilder knows for sure what he’s after or sees in the players I guess.

I have been wondering for a while how much of mousset wilder saw when we were training at the same place as Bournemouth last summer - he must have had a shufty then as the interest has been rumoured for a while.

So he had to catch a plane from Gatwick to Birmingham?? 🤔

I think Mousset said in his first Blades interview yesterday (the one about "the weather"!!), that CW tried to bring him in last season, but it didn't happen for some reason.

I would have thought signing Mousset would put an end to talk of Maupay, wouldn't it? Would that not be those two and Sharp up for the same position (assuming we play two upfront?)

Mousset is a very different player to Maupay. Them being French is broadly the only similarity.

And perhaps, the fact that there's a fellow countryman at the Lane, may make NM more likely to sign now.

Agreed, why the hell would you get a plane to Birmingham unless it’s a private flight? By the time you’ve pissed about with security and boarding, you could already be at New Street Station!

In all seriousness I was at tramlines yesterday and Egan was there with his missus (I walked right past him) and another couple (a lad with dark hair and stubble). I remember thinking at the time he looks familiar, and now having googled Maupay I have convinced myself it was him....

Hasnt Maupay got silver hair at the moment??

I'm probably barking up the wrong tree. It was definitely Egan though....
