With all that extra and immediate income why wouldn't we spend £50m? It can and should help us secure that level of income for years to come.

Upset the dressing room? Why should it? Pay all the players well and have substantial season performance bonuses if we stay up. P.L. and T.V. minimum earns extra 'windfall income' on promotion over £190m over 3 years, plus more on sponsorship, attendances etc. Risk our financial future - why? Player contract clauses should kick in on relegation or after 3 years.

Do we need to spend £50m to improve our current squad?, well at least £40m surely. Roughly £14m spent to date. ( excluding extra wages in the context of this thread).

United, don't be squeezed out on the real quality that can make the difference. All three signings to date are brilliant, get the rest!

Wilder might have to visit the Prince again soon.

As the main man has said a few times, spunkin' money isn't always the answer. By the time the window is over I reckon we'll have a net spend of about £25-30m. This won't break our team ethos of the sum being greater than the parts. There is also the Wilder/Knill/Mitchell factor. I'm more confident now than ever that we will stay up next season.

It’s not just the outlay on transfer fees it’s the wages, agent’s fees and other associated costs that are not publicised. In an ideal world we’d invest a bit but if CW is happy, I’m happy. Sunderland were promoted to the PL in 2006-07 as champions of the Championship (88 pts.) After ten seasons in the PL, they were relegated in 2016-17 with just 24 points and the rest is history.



As others have said, money spent becomes irrelevant when the manager(s) are wrong. Sunderlands WiKi page makes chilling reading:

Just out of interest, since I've never played it, does FM also work with realistic football finances?

For instance as well as fee you have wages, employers ni, pensions, agents and other fees and loads of addtional costs. I would suggest for each £10million you pay out in transfers to a player on a 4 year contract, then you need an extra 25% for £10k a week you pay the player. For example, £10m fee, £30k a week actually costs you an extra £15 million over 4 years. Thats about £7 million a year per player. Appreciate you cover that cost if you stay up but if you don't........ And this is on top of existing wages.

I think you're missing the point...

Just because I said "bargain basement" doesn't mean they're no good, as paying 20m doesn't mean they're amazing. A player is only worth how much someone is prepared to pay for them. Like you said in your bit in bold.

But the fact is, you can only go so far before cheap players and freebies are useless. The key is trying to sift through the cheap and expensive crap and find that gem of a player who's going for a good price yet has potential to be a real star. But everyone is trying to do that, we're not unique.
