I hope it's not an alternative for MAupay or McBurnie but surely it has to be for one of them. Out of the three players, from what I've seen Robinson is more like Maupay.

The simple fact is we still need two quality strikers. Anyone who thinks one more in addition to Billy and Dids will do in the Premier League is barking mad.

Robinson will surely compete with Mcgoldrick for one spot whilst any new signing (maupay/ mcburnie/ Austin/ other) would compete with Billy.

When I've seen Robinson play he seems to be a roaming forward who drops off and pulls wide like Mcgoldrick/ Brooks. Can't see playing in the Duffy role.

Players for whom we smash our transfer record are not coming to compete. They’re coming to start. Otherwise we wouldn’t smash our transfer record for them!

Points, not sentiment.

I agree we still need two strikers but will we spend big on both? Or will it be one of McBurnie or Maupay (or someone we haven't thought of yet) and a bit of flyer on someone cheaper?

I'd still like us to take a chance on Puscas, but that's mainly because of the name. I'd also be satisfied with Jarrincha, De Stefano or Tiago Maradona.

All the players recruited preseason will be expected to upgrade the squad.
Surely it will be up to all the players to provide justification for their name to be on the team sheet for each and every match. As always, it will be the strength in depth of the squad that will determine our level of success.

I am sure Billy, Didsy and the rest of our current players will be relishing the challenge and feel confident that they will have their fair share of pitch time.

Peel?

I also like the trajectory of his career and the point we are intercepting it.

A few on Porktalk admitting their jealousy but others trying to calm themselves by saying he hasn't scored for Ireland yet and has 1 in 4 in his career. Hardly the figures to keep us up.

His last year though - 13 in 28. Very decent. Definitely on for 20 goals.

Good age. Takes the pressure off a little in he persuit of McBurnie/Maupay. Can be 1/2 now as opposing to feeling a need to get both.

He’s class. Without his injury he’d already be at a PL club.

I would suggest Robinson ends our interest in Maupay, signing both would make an already small side even shorter.....I would expect a significantly taller, more physical striker to come in now, hopefully McB, if not it might be someone like Charlie Austin or we may even go back for Madine....(God forbid).

Is that how it works then? When we buy one striker it cancels out another one that we are interested in? I'm not sure I agree with that tbh. I think if we are genuinely interested in Maupay - and all the media hype seems to suggest we are - then signing Robinson doesn't change that at all. You have to remember we are going to be competing in the toughest football division in the world. It's normal to have more than one option for key positions. I think Robinson is a decent up and coming player, but he's hardly what I'd throw at Premiership teams as our 1st choice forward. I think he's here to develop and be ready in the next 18 months, whereas Maupay is a different class altogether to me. He's definitely ready now for the step-up.

I agree with you about McBurnie though. I'd like to see us sign a taller striker with some good aerial ability - and McBurnie seems to tick that box.

We are making our team much stronger the exact same way we have always done it.

In the past we signed Northampton best player / Southend / Ipswich etc....

If we end up going down we will be coming down with some of the best players in the division exactly like Burnley have done.

There mainstay players are the same type of ours they signed Leeds best player (Wood) then signed Villa’s (Westwood), Tarkowski etc.

Championship player (albeit a gud un) in the final year of his contract, attracts £6m-£8m fee ?

PNE worked the oracle on that one me thinks.

I’m guessing Robinson doesn’t have the same agent as Koscielny at Arsenal !!

UTB

Robinson is 5ft 10in so not exactly a short-arse. Granted, no Peter Crouch, but no Alan Wright either...

My thoughts are entirely linked to our apparent budget constraints. Otherwise I agree with you.

Yep, we're down to about £4M left if the 'experts' are to be believed. Yet there are quotes flying around that we will beat the transfer record a couple of times yet.

yes it will be interesting to see how much we shell out in the end. A week ago it was looking like £30M on two strikers - Maupay and McBurnie. I was getting giddy at the though of that. Realistically, the club ought to be willing to spend between £30M and £40M in order to have a realistic chance of staying in the Prem for more than one season. We've never thought like that in the past though - this is "Sheffield" after all - and the "ARR MUCH?" mentality pervades everything we do. We know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

On the plus side, we've got a manager who can get a quart out of a pint pot and he's got a very good eye for a player, plus he can get them playing in a fashion that confounds and bewilders other teams. That may just be the thing that keeps us afloat.

I would like to point out and remind those suggesting we NEED to spend a specific amount to have a good chance of survival that we’ve been told that before, and it’s complete bollocks.

It’s actually the players you sign and how we use them, not what they cost.
Our best signing this summer could well end up being free again...as it was last season!

If we lose out on Maupay...we miss out. Yes he’s a good player and may well have been our first choice. But we couldn’t get it done so we move on and look at others.
