CONFIRMED Dean Henderson returns on season long loan

He sees us as his safety net, and he shouldn't...I believe we can, and should do better, I think he's massively overrated and will get found out next season.

We should be doing whats best for Sheffield United, not what's best for Henderson...and this is the best opportunity we'll have to sign a top quality goalkeeper on a PERMANENT contract. Why are we wasting preparation time waiting for a season long loan of a totally unproved goalkeeper at Premier League level, who has been shipping in goals for fun at a post-season under 21 tournament? I struggle to see how this arrangement will benefit Sheffield United...I really don't want to be the guy saying "I told you so" before Christmas, but fear it will play out like that.

I get what you're saying and tend to agree with some points, like the fact we need a goalkeeper on a permanent, long-term contract.

But Henderson knows the place and the squad so it's not as if he'd be a new loan addition who doesn't really care about us. From last season, I don't think anyone can question his commitment and love for the club and it'd be the same this season, even if he is technically a Manchester United player.

In reality, he's the top young English keeper at the minute. If we wanted someone else of his quality, we'd be paying £10m+, which just isn't going to happen. I'd take him for this season and if we can stay up, then sign someone for the long-term next summer.

So what you're saying is, you want to keep him for a season...and the best case scenario is we manage to stay up, and then we can be back in this very same situation at the start of next season? It doesn't make any sense and it's a gamble, If we don't stay up, we won't be able to attract a top quality goalkeeper that we'd be able to right now.

Believing he loves the club is naive mate, he's been playing the fans since day 1 by putting the words to the GCB song on his Twitter the day he signed on loan...and fans like you have lapped it up. There are goalkeepers out there we could get under 10m that I believe are better than Henderson.

Based on your criteria ( available and would cost under £10 million) who is better than DH who would come to us ?

Darren Randolph? - not better imo, but closest to DH last season, better in the eyes of PFA TOTY

Randolph and Etheridge would be keepers I'd want if were after a permanent. How much they'd go for I don't know though.

Randolph maybe £5m? Etheridge would be pushing £10m I'd say. If he hadn't declared for the Philippines at International level he'd be worth closer to £20m with the English player tax, quality keeper.

Of course this is going down a subjective path, as no one can be sure what other clubs would accept fee wise, but I'd say...

Etheridge
Westwood
Marshall
Randolph
McCarthy
Butland - not sure how long he has left on his contract, but granted he'd be more than 10m if he has more than a year left.

Jake Eastwood was pictured training with us on Monday, and gone out on loan today. Means nothing really.

Edit: I've just checked back, Jake wasn't in the pictures, might have been on Instagram last week.

I'm just trying to second guess Foxy's post, showing him in Man U training gear could be hinting he is likely to stay at Man U or at least not sign for us.

Butland and Johnstone under £10mill ? No chance. I would argue DH is better than Johnstone anyway

Etheridge is better (my number 1 pick unless we somehow get Henderson on a permanent)

Randolph is probably around the same level, I would prefer Randolph on a permanent than Henderson on loan.

Butland is the best on that list but unattainable.
 

Getting a bit wazzed off with all this Man Utd, will he / won't he business. Loved him and the whole business last year but can't accept the feeling that Sheffield united will take, and be governed by, their whim and the wishes of a talented lad who is a long way off being their starter. Sign or don't, cheerio pal and we'll get someone who sees us as their club and not just a means to an improbable end.

You're entitled to your opinion but I certainly don't agree with it. Johnstone went to West Brom for 6.5m last summer, so I'm pretty sure they'd sell for 10m.

I think you're overrating Henderson, each one of the keepers I've mentioned on that list are more accomplished than him and have Premier League experience (excluding Johnstone), so I'm not sure what you're basing "the rest aren't better than DH" on. I remember a BladesPod episode where they assessed Henderson as an average Championship goalkeeper based on his stats last season, the defence was brilliant last season and most games he had very little to do.
 
Id go and get Marshall on a free from Hull. That might waken Man Utd up to the idea that there are other decent keepers out there for other clubs (and us) to sign and that they will quickly lose out on their young player getting the chance to play Premier League football at the Lane, to gain invaluable experience.

The positives of Hendo coming to the Lane arent all just one way.

Utd should give Man Utd a deal 'drop dead' date and tell them we are very interested up that date, but after that...we have moved on. It might help focus minds and get a few decisions made one way or another.

Hes a decent young keeper, but he's not a world beater. Stop acting like we are waiting for scraps from Man Utds table. We are a PL club now so should start acting like we deserve to be at the same table as anyone else, no matter who they are. I hope Utd sign him soon...or they just dont bother with him, and move on quickly. Personally, im happy either way.

I’m getting bored of this Henderson saga, let’s get Randolph, top keeper, knows half the defence in front of him, and no worrying about who our keeper is next season

Agree with this ... I'm inclined to believe Etheridge behind our defence / system would be a decent prem keeper
 
We must sign him kf it's slowed 10 mill. If we do not stay up , we'd still get that back anyway , it's a win , win situation
