CONFIRMED Jagielka

I genuinely had no idea how good Paul McGrath was until his brief cameo for Spackmans United.

The man could barely walk, couldn’t train, didn’t warm up(bar rubbing his hands together), and yet he was absolutely outstanding in every single game for us.
Probably the best ( or the most i've enjoyed watching a player ? )in my four decades supporting the blades, just retired as soon as he got a permanent contract though

Having someone like Jagielka available, particularly away from home next season may well be crucial in our getting the all important 12-15 away points we will need to secure a safe league position. The reality is we will need to win at least 12 games next season and the majority are going to come at home, the points return we get away from home will define our season and Jagielka could prove to be a very useful addition in a more defensive line up.

Has the name of Snodgrass been mentioned? Apparently he's not a first choice option for West Ham, he's shown that he's capable at Prem level, so maybe worth considering?

Although I'm in two minds about this, I'm trying to suspend any prejudices I might have and consider players who are as good, if not better, than we already have.

I rarely use the term 'different class', but if any player deserved such an accolade it was McGrath. I already knew that PM was up there with the very best, unfortunately he deserved better than to play for an international team that had far too many ordinary players. Watching him play too briefly for the Blades, it was like watching a man versus boys at times. Everything about his game was so superior to what I'd come to expect of a Blade that I was smitten by this giant of a player.

Whenever there's a 'best of' Blades teams, he has to be included, that's how good McGarth was. If PM was still playing today I'd wager he'd be the difference between us remaining in the Premiership instead of being relegated.

“We do not want people who are just seeing their career out. We want them to have that attitude, to kick on and improve.” - A snippet from one of Wilder's interviews yesterday

No brainer for me. He is one of the most highly thought of professionals in recent years. He has great experience and is clever enough to realise he wouldn't be starting regularly. He is a huge upgrade on Stearman as back up for Egan. Also, away to Man City who would be more useful an overlapping Bash or Jags trying to keep things tight? He would be a great steadying influence for the team.

All yesses, but on what wage?

Burnley at 21/10 to go down isn't a bad bet. Neither is Newcastle at 11/4

Utd are 6/5 to avoid relegation

Would not suit our style or formation now legs have gone too much for that. He could however do a decent job in Burnley’s more defensive minded set up, they sit deep and play the extra defender away from home.

Agree. if we were remotely interested he would be coming to Portugal with us.

Agreed I’m a bit surprised United haven’t gone for him , I would of thought of his signing as a McCabe one rather than a Wilder one.
In the Ched Evans mould . Personally I’m happy think we need more youth and athleticism

McGrath was a real eye opener to me too.
It was like watching a magic trick, a form of hypnotism or mind reading.
McGrath looked so slow but was always the first to the ball.
He knew where the ball would go before it was kicked/ passed, never seen anything like it before.
He made defending look so so easy as he strolled around around the park.

Regards Jagielka, doubt he’d fit our style of play and assume he’d be very expensive wages for a back up player. So it’s a no from me.

Wouldn't he just be an upgrade on Stearman i.e solid backup for Egan's position when needed? Or perhaps to chuck some extra experience in defence to see out the last five minutes when we're close to a result?

If the wages are daft he won't come, but if the price is right, we'd be absolute fools to not take him.

Let's just fucking get it over and done with, eh...

Signing him would indicate a couple of things....

We're struggling to find suitable right footed defenders at the right price.

We're bringing him in as a money saving signing to ensure we can afford our attacking targets.

Still think this would be an excellent signing personally.

As Ricky says, won't break the bank and money can be invested elsewhere. He's still very capable. Knows the club, knows the league.

Personally though I think he's a shoo-in for Rangers.

All things considered, I wouldn’t actually mind that if this is the strategy. We do have to do things differently to other clubs, because we simply don’t have the resources currently. If it’s Jagielka as an all round back-up to the defence, in order to allow cash to be focused on getting Maupay or McBurnie then I’d be ok with that. If it’s Jagielka in and failure with the other targets, then that would be a bit of a disaster (and subsequent waste of a signing in bringing Jagielka in).

I still think we'd need another 2 CBs even if he signs though.

RCB - Basham / Jags. Good enough?
LCB - O'Connell / Jags. Nah.

He's a good cover option for the central role, and experience is useful, but based on the above he'd strike me as a bit of a spare, additional signing.
