“Proper club”

It’s a typical close season, slow news time. So please indulge me on this one. All through last season and after our end of season triumph. I’ve heard us being constantly referred to a “proper club” by media types and pundits alike. Not really made my mind up to whether it’s a compliment and disguised dig at us? When the media were busy blowing smoke up Bielsa’s arse and waxing lyrical about massive club Leeds, our segway into the conversation was all about our “hard working, fantastic achievement, unique approach, team ethic and being a proper club?
So what do they mean by “Proper club” and do we think it means?

Many Sheff Utd fans have a persecution complex, and this forum seems to constantly perpetuate a perceived media bias against us - this is despite our success being lauded by many pundits throughout the media, and Chris Wilder's growing reputation.

The fact that the term "proper club" is being questioned as a potential dig at the club is evidence of the above.

Not everyone loves us, but that applies to every club. Let's just accept the compliments we receive and brush off the occasional unfair criticism.

I've always assumed that it means a club which doesn't attract bandwagon jumping glory seekers. We didn't even have a bandwagon until Wilder turned up, and then he got pissed and nearly dropped the trophy off the front of it!

I think the term ‘proper club’ is generally meant as a complement. Non plastic, solid fan base, history and a decent ground etc. I don’t have a problem with it.

It’d be interesting to define the clubs who aren’t generally seen as ‘proper’. MKD?

I take it as a compliment,that we try and do things the correct way,show respect to other teams,both in words and deeds,and accept defeat in the right manner,for example,Wilders actions after the Barnet game.Another example is that you will not get any of our players speaking like Bamford did about us.

We know how grim the bad times can be so we celebrate the good times with enormous pleasure and pride, although we'll never take any success for granted.

We appreciate a player who will run through a brick wall for the cause and we are quick to spot a player who just isn't good enough or doesn't give a toss about the shirt or the club.

Our stadium is a place we take great pride in and has seen a lot of history, celebrations and heartbreak. We're self-effacing but fiercely proud and we seem to band together without a second thought when we're the underdog or in times of adversity.

We aren't, and never will be up our own arses and our love for Sheffield United will never leave us.​

Know what you're saying but our (rare) compliments have been chiselled out by hard work, little money and having a damn good manager. FLDC get more plaudits simply because of who they've got as manager. Leeds because...they always have and because the self-styled 'cognescenti' are dying to be proved that the claims of Bielsa as a football genius are right.

Not playing like he does - over casual. Strutting like he does. Trying to be flash with every goal attempt he does- instead of hitting the target. He put the ball high into their fans 3 times against us when he should have done a lot better. Fancy Dan.

It's an obvious racist dogwhistle implying that teams that are filled with foreign players aren't proper.

I like us being a proper club, to me it implies that we're doing things in the right way. It maybe slightly patronising to some, but it was something that Nigel Clough mentioned when he joined and at that time it was an appreciation that we were perhaps not where we should be.

As with everything Wilder, he's used this in a very good way to further enhance that he gets the club and the fans

I tend to think of United as being the working mans club, esp with fanbase, hard working, loyal to each other and to the club, will help anyone out in trouble, honest in life and honest talkers, tell it straight and true even if it might offend and hurt others. Thats how I think of what it means to be a blade plus of course the RED and WHITE stripes......hopefully i don't think and I will presume that most on here don't think that we are big time charlies and I don't think the club see's it'self like that either.

Definitely a compliment...and means different things to different people...other proper clubs in my opinion are Newcastle, Villa and Everton...and it pains me to say it but the Pigs and Leeds....also Forest.

For me you can only be a proper club if you have some history, a big fan base, an old school ground, largely working class support and not much success the last 20 years.

Under my definition both Man City and Chelsea were proper clubs in their pre 'big money era'.

I’ve always taken it to mean a club with a long history in the football league with a loyal following home and away playing at a traditional ground.

It’s a bit of a meaningless term though. It means whatever the person saying it wants it to mean...same as when people talk about ‘big clubs’.

The one that annoys me most though is when people talk about other clubs having ‘no history’. Liverpool fans are the worst for this. Some genuinely have little history of note like MK Dons, Crawley, Fleetwood etc but when it gets levelled at clubs like Man City and Chelsea it’s just ridiculous.

This afternoon I drove up Blackstock Road for the first time since the season ended. There's a Co-Op across from the lights and some brain dead loser has graffitied ' SUFC Sponsored by Bin Laden, Scum. ' across the wall facing you as you wait at the lights.

At least we can narrow down the brain dead loser to every pig fan in the city.
Then it’s just a case of further elimination by the likelihood of a brain dead loser coming from outside the locality.
Based on the fact that the area like most of Sheffield rather than the outlying areas are red & white I reckon there’s probably only half a dozen suspects to pick from.

You appear to be forgetting their 500,000 local fans and 5 Million world wide following. Trying to narrow it down on IQ level is an impossible task as it could be anyone of them.
