Havent put this in the Rumour mill as its not a rumour more a question posed to the board.

After watching the Wolves Vs Brum highlights yesterday, and the reaction of Halford at being taken off, maybe he isnt a favourite in the squad despite getting a run of games.

On this basis, what would the general thoughts be should we look to bring him back to the lane?

For me I thought he was a good player who added to the team and could bring a flash of excitement on occasions. Not to mention being goal minded when the oppertunity arose!

So whats the thoughts?

I don't think he'd want to drop down a league and I don't think we'd pay the wages he'd want.

I fear that I will never see his rippled torso after he's shed a Blades shirt again :(

EDIT: I don't think the Wolves fans would miss him... LINKY

I thought Greg Halford was a quality player in the CCC and possibly thats his level. He appears to struggle in the PL and enjoys the cut and thrust of the CCC rather than the sophistication of the higher grade of football.
In short a good player to get you out of the CCC but possibly just lacking for the PL

but for the money he'd want and he'd cost whats his position? right wing, right back, centre half, centre forward, centre midfield? his versatility is also his downfall. too many times last season we played with a lopsided formation to get him in the team. undoubtadely a good player but where?

plus for what he'd cost in an overall package we'd be better off signing that elusive box to box central midfielder!!

I get that he was booed off by Wolves fans. But what was Halford's reaction?

Same one as when he was taken off at Cardiff for us apparently.

A bit of perspex slapping in the dug-out.

I'd have him back immediately. If he's unhappy at Wolves, then he just might accept a drop in wages to play for a club that generally appreciated the job he did.

I'd pick him up myself and drive him back to sheffield chained up in the boot if it meant getting him in our starting XI

The problem with Halford always was where to play him?

He could come in and play at right back when Walker goes, otherwise you are dropping Ward and removing the pace from our right hand side. Halford like Quinny (and Wardy for that matter) play on the wing but don't really want to and keep coming inside giving us no width.

Blackwell didn't see it as a problem. He just dropped whoever needed to be dropped and slotted Gregory right in.

For my part, I'm not fussed whether he comes back or not. He was a good team player last year, and did well for us on a number of occasions, but I'm never too sure about players coming back for a second go. Also, I'm not sure he's the solution to getting the team spirit back.

We need to get shut of some loanees Currently we have Harper, Walker, Davies, Tallio, Creswell;Bunn, Ikeme, and Halford can play in any of those positions except goalie
ould be a good signing if he'd come back!
Don't hold my breath tho'

Yeah, he fitted him in and we had no pace on the right when he played him there. This wasn't so bad with the pace of the Kyles pushing on, but we don't have that now down both flanks. You could play in him in the middle with Monty but then you are dropping Willo or Harper for a player who doesn't really create lots.
I just don't see where he fits in unless we have him at the end of the season to replace Kyle.

Personally I'd rather us try and get Bale for the left hand side for the same wages.

When I saw this thread I thought that it was about House on Sky1 last night? Good episode.:D

Anyway, as for old players coming back I would generally say no, especially if he didn't command a set position in the team when he was here. As good as Halford was most of the time he did drift in and out of matches a bit as well.

The two exceptions to the rule who immediately spring to mind are King Keith in the early to mid-80's and Deano, but they were strikers and it is easier I think for them to slot into a team.

I was thinking about this a few days ago. I'd love to have him back, very good for us last season, perhaps more so in the second half of the season, played a massive part in us challenging for the top 2. I'd have him here in a shot but probably won't happen.

Agreed Wards

Halford Monty Williamson Ward - Pretty formidable that, maybe put Harper in to make it a 5 if need be.

Perv!.....................

Damn right.

I'd be satisfied if they loaned him back over the winter period just to sit next to me and keep me warm.

I do understand those views will not be echoed by the majority :D

I'm pretty sure to have team spirit you need a team. Just a manager on his own is no good. It's like expecting a rowing race to be won with a boat that has a cox but no rowists. He can sit there and shout all he likes about rowing quicker, but if he's on his own all he'll get is a sore throat.

I appreciate what you say about the manager, but you can have the nicest manager going, and one or two players who are simply nasty little shits wherever they are, and no matter how many cuddles they get they will fall out with team mates - see Lee Bowyer, Craig Bellamy, etc.

Anyhow, Gregory. He was a good player for us, but if he'd wanted to play for us he wouldn't have signed for Wolves. We probably can't afford his wages. Linz will just have to make do with the Adonis that is Quinny taking his top off, like a leprechaun stripper.

nothing wrong with gh wanting to play @ the highest standard, thats why he signed for wolves. Nothing wrong with dropping down on loan to the champ either bht with our loanees i cant see it happening!

He wanted to play at the highest level, and as you say there is nothing wrong with that. Similarly if he'd wanted to play for us then he could easily have taken the cut in wages and said he'd love to play for us. He also did drop down a division to come on loan. I can't see him coming back.

Over 20k a week for a bloke with a long throw ,we have better mis-managed players at the club already.

Come off it Sitters, he had more to his game and you know it. I'd go as far to say that he's almost a complete player at Championship level. Can play RB,RM,LM and if pushed to wouldn't look too out of place at CB, CM & CF. Produced some fantastic attacking football towards the second half of the season.

I'd say compared to other players in the division, 20K a week for him is pretty fair.

I think the problem is exactly that, where to play him and what's his best position. To me, as well as he did last season (and let's not kid ourselves he was brilliant all the time) it was a problem in that Blackie didn't know where to play him and tried to fit him in at all costs, sometimes at a cost to the team.

We need specialist players in specialist positions, not players who can fit in and do several jobs.

Not brilliant all the time but his form in the second half of the season was consistantly very good. I disagree that Blackwell tried to fit him in at all costs to detriment of the team. If he was currently our player he'd have the LM spot to himself, and can swap to RM if need be and swap with Walker as he did with Naughton during games to great success.

Who can forget his superb header against Preston too?

Complete player old Gregory.

In short, it'll be a fantastic signing for us, but so would Rooney ;-)

That's my point, a left midfielder he certainly isn't. Jack of all trades, master of none IMO and we should be looking for better specialised players in certain positions, the likes of Halmosi or McSheffrey for the left side for example.

Not really Fleets. I think he proved he could very easily be a master of LM. Afterall, it isn't his fault he's being pushed around. You are viewing being versitile as being a bad thing, I don't think this is the case.

I think you prove my point by comparing him to Halmosi and McSheffrey. I'd walk over hot coals to get Gregory back here whereas I wouldn't touch Halmosi or McSheffrey with a barge poll!
