But they didn’t have PL money when they signed him - he was signed in January
That's true.

I would have thought that made the likelihood of us getting a good deal even less.

We have a lot of shirts to fill now that we have released the list. Good that Wilder has the loanees returning. It gives him some cooling off time. It would have been easy to get wrapped up in the parade and make rash decisions. It's good he is not like that.

Madine was useful and enjoyed his time here. 3 goals in his time were helpful and his assist vs Villa for Sharp good plus a few other contributions.

As some have alluded, we progress now by getting players in who are better than Sharp and McGoldrick. Not by getting useful players who can back them up.

Without it, it could have been better, it could have been worse.
Without it we bit our fingernails as the opposition gradually got on top of us after being dominated by us for the 1st 50 or 60 minutes. We then conceded goals as we failed to see out games successfully. Wilder saw what we saw, and knew of a solution - including the loan signing of Gary Madine. He knew there would be Neanderthals throwing up the usual tribal shit to oppose what they saw as treason. Thankfully, he ignored it and got us over the line. Now that he has, some of those who opposed his decision and had to suck it up now feel they can crawl out of the woodwork and say we could have gained promotion anyhow - Jeeez!
I make no wonder Wilder feels the need to have a pop and a wry smile at some of our own "fans".

The average weekly wage in the Premier League is about 50 grand. Obviously that's driven higher by the big earners at the top clubs, but I can't see many agents letting their clients join us and not asking for the sort of money we're discussing.

I don't think the jump is that bad. Our playing staff cost us £13.1m in wages in 2017/18. Over a squad of 30 that's an average of £435k per year or £8.5k per week. Assuming that's doubled on promotion puts our highest earners somewhere around the £30k/week mark now so I'd imagine a couple of the marquee signings may well get towards £35-£40k. What I doubt we'll do is sign squad players on anything like that money.

We'll be in the market for Championship players who - outside of the few exceptional cases (Maddison, Brooks) don't really get a look in at Premier League level. My guess is that our strategy will revolve around Wilder's ability to improve players and the chance for them to prove themselves in the PL before getting a move up the ladder and onto those 6-figure wages.

This was the reported average Premier League salary by club in November 2018. Cardiff, Wolves and Fulham would have been Championship sides when this list was put together but even a side like Burnley now has an average player salary of over £30k/week. Note: I'm not entirely sure what the source of this info is.

What has worried me is that whilst we certainly need more of a physical threat up front at times, we do seem to change our style when he's in the team, that's maybe not a slight on him particularly, I guess the same would apply to any of his type. When you loook around the Prem, how many teams actually use this type of player anymore ?

Everton seem to do it with DCL at times, Chelski resort to it at times with Giroud but predominately, the 'bang it up to the big man days' are gone at this level.
Can think of two other teams that play with a target man upfront.

Newcastle do it with rondon up front. Whilst they do also play down the channels. They do tend to have the "hoof it up top" option with him.

Burnley do it with Chris Woods. I'd also argue that Barnes fits the target man mould too.

and I wouldn't want to go and watch either team :)

It has kept them up though............

What a load of bollocks. Neanderthals? Tribal? Treason? The objection to Madine was his criminal record and tendency to punch people on a night out - you're saying it's neanderthals who don't want that sort of person representing the club, and decent, civilised people who do? Bit arse about tit, isn't it?
Wilder saw that we had a weakness and decided to do something about it. He chose to bring in Madine. If he hadn't, he would have found a different solution, someone else, or a different tactical approach. It might have worked better, it might have been worse. We'll never know. All we do know is that overall he got it right and we won promotion.
As for crawling out of the woodwork, I seem to remember most people who didn't want him said that they would continue to support the team and even Madine as long as he was a United player. That doesn't mean they've changed their minds and it doesn't mean they shouldn't have their say when it comes to voicing opinions on signing him for next season. If Wilder can't deal with the fans having an opinion, he's a weaker man than I thought.

The vast majority of fans support and respect his opinion, and he's proved others (the minority - including you) wrong. You fail to mention the fact that Madine played for the other lot - maybe that tainted their reasoning too?

Madine did ok for us without a doubt. We did the same in the Div 1 campaign when the signing of Hanson gave us something we didn't have. Gave opposition something different to think about. Last night it was the bringing on of Lorente that allowed Spurs to use him to occupy the centre and hold the ball up. It can work because most defnces are not used to it! Got to trust Wider on this. What differs so much the higher you go is the speed of thought (Trent Alexander Arnold's corner for example) and anticipation as well as actual pace itself.

So you're just assuming why people didn't want Madine - if they say it's because they don't want a convicted thug, you assume it's because he played for Wednesday?
And how has Wilder proved me wrong?

And how has Wilder proved me wrong?

How can you even ask that question after all that you've posted on this forum about the Madine signing and the way Wilder chose to play with him in the team!!
You were wrong - Wilder was right; get over yourself.

The Middlesbrough striker?

No , that's Assembleinthelongrass which derives from the traditional and historic call to students at Eton College to evacuate the building in case of fire or other catastrophic event .

Just thought I'd clear that up for you .:)

Go on then, link to a few posts where what I've said was wrong. There must be loads after "all I've posted".
The only thing I can remember is that I didn't think he would be that influential for us - and quite honestly I don't think he has been, certainly no more than I would expect any loan striker to be and I don't think he was vital to our promotion.

Likewise. Although... If slogging the ball up top for 15 - 20 minutes a game enables us to stay up at earn £150 (ish) million a season.. I'm happy.

Why do we need a new media centre. We were on tv, radio and in the papers when we had the old one.

And where’s that gone? Scarborough Group I bet.

(Nods head sagely)

It’s to house the fax machine.

Your attitude to the signing of Madine, and your moral crusade, did not suggest you were ever likely to have an objective opinion on his contribution to the Blades cause. For a Blades fan to say his contribution has not been "influential" may well be a reflection of your prejudice. If you have been to all the matches and seen the overall effect on Blades performances I am amazed you can draw the conclusions you have, unless of course you'd already made your mind up?

What "moral crusade"? It is my opinion that United should not be represented by thugs and I expressed that opinion. How is that a crusade? You appear to be saying that no one should have an opinion based on a moral point of view. Most of my posts were defending the right for people to express their opinion.
Here's one of my posts from before:

You are one of those people who sneer and deride anyone who has a moral standpoint.
Has it prejudiced my view on his contribution? No one can tell, not even me, but I don't think it's swayed me that much. I certainly hadn't already made my mind up, the stakes were too high and I hoped he would - at the very least - not let us down.
One thing I didn't expect was that we would change our style of play to hoof it up to him, though some said that's why they wanted him, I didn't believe Wilder would do that. But we did and I don't think it's the right way to go. We've now got some people saying we need to make "Plan B" into "Plan A" for the Premier League.
But I think Wilder was hoping for more goals from Madine (and Hogan) which, for the money, is probably why Wilder will look elsewhere. He played his part, but I don't think he was all that influential, compared to a different loan striker that Wilder could have brought in, which is what I actually said, not what you quoted me as saying.
