The Tuna fish that descended from Lake Michigan
Regardless of what we end up achieving this season, no-one could argue that (purely from a finacial point of view) we're batting well above our average.
In terms of wages, we spent £19m in total last season. While that figure has no doubt increased this season, it will pale in comparison to teams such as Villa, West Brom & Stoke who will likely be spending in the region of £60-£75m.
What's more impressive is the cost in transfer fees to assemble the team, below is our best 11 (IMO of course) and their respective transfer fees:
Dean Henderson - N/A (Loan)
Chris Basham - £0 (Free transfer)
John Egan - £4.1m
Jack O'Connell - <£500k (Undisclosed)
George Baldock - £666k (Undisclosed)
John Fleck - £0 (Free transfer)
Ollie Norwood - £2m (Undisclosed)
Enda Stevens - £0 (Free transfer)
Mark Duffy - £0 (Free transfer)
Billy Sharp - £635k (Undisclosed)
David McGoldrick - £0 (Free transfer)
So that's an entire first 11 signed for under £8m. To put that into perspective, around 9 players have been signed for a fee in excess of that, just during the time we've been in the championship. More amazing still is that I'd estimate the combined market value of that team to be at least £50m now.
Chris Wilder, Paul Mitchell and anyone else involved in scouting players deserve immense credit. They've managed to assemble one of the best sides in the league on a relative shoestring.
I look forward to many more rabbits being pulled out of hats in the coming years.
