League placings, or whether a team has something to play for, don't really count for much at the end of the season. There are freak results aplenty (just look at Norwich recently) and no team has nothing to play for. Players are giving it their all playing for contract renewals, managers are looking to stay in a job. Often teams are more relaxed when there's nothing at stake.

Only the most pessimistic of fans could call a relegated Ipswich at home tricky.

Totally agree with this sentiment even if we win auto promotion. We are a cantankerous, obstinate and opinionated lot. Just glad we ain’t pigs eh?

if Leeds get 7 or 8 points from their 4 remaining games they won't have bottled anything. That's a good return with the games they have left.

The unpredictable thing in this league is the opposition. Lots of really talented, inconsistent players means results can be really difficult to judge. A good example is Clarke at Wigan. He decides to have one of his "unplayable days", like against Wolves at home for us last year and Leeds are up against it. If he has one of his 6/10 days then it's an easy game for Cooper / Pontius.

Totally out of our hands and Leeds' too to be fair
 
Don’t forget their is a massive financial incentive for the players and CW.
If we get promoted huge bonus’s will be earned and big increase in wages next season for all players on future contracts
So if you are a first team player you would be desperate to get your hands on the promotion bonus and extra wages
 
There have been a lot of good opinions on on this thread. My post is mainly aimed at those who somehow think they are 'Better Blades' because they have an ultra positive mindset going into the last 4 matches.

Negativity comes mainly from those Blades of a certain age that have seen this kind of situation go south on many occasions. You can't blame fans for having a cup half empty. Let down/disappointment: It's the Blades way. & many of us have seen & experienced a great deal of it. I would probably count myself in this group as I always expect Blades to let me down.
It doesn't however mean I'm not getting behind or not going to get behind them for the last 4 games. I will be giving it 100+%.

To have the optimism of youth or if you are blessed with an ever positive mindset must be brilliant, I'd love that. Doesn't mean you are a better fan than others of us that are afflicted with 'Realism'. ALL of us will be getting behind the side for the run in & play-offs if that is our destiny.
 
You should all sit in a circle and make this like an AA meeting, it the only way.

But unfortunately, when we actually get in the ground and the match gets going "all of us" aren't getting behind the side :(
Quite a few just seem to be waiting for the first mistake.
Mentally you can be as pessimistic as you want but surely in the ground alongside your fellow fans you can at least sing along and pretend you're enjoying yourselves?

The ‘better Blades’ comment doesn’t really stand up because time and again the ‘clappers’ are constantly told that they are the problem, and that those who are negative at every opportunity are somehow superior because they won’t settle for second best (whatever that is). Also, you get young fans who are ultra negative and you get older fan who remain positive whatever they’ve been through, that’s life. I personally just don’t get the perennial glass half empties and hated last weekend it when I got a set of (younger by the way) moaning gits around me, but you can’t change the way people are.

The difference with forums and social media though is that not everyone is what they seem. For some it’s all about attention not the team they support, and they get far more attention by having extreme views young or old. There are online ‘Blades’ who to the best of my knowledge have never posted anything positive about the club, staying quiet in the good times then appearing after a defeat or bad run to have a pop. Did they ever really support the club or have they simply fallen out of love? Are some undercover Pork? It’s hard to call, but but I bet they’re all age groups.

Nic, you're entitled to be as pessimistic as you like. You strike me as someone who shoots from the hip, so you shouldn't be surprised if anyone responds with a contrary point of view. I've also adopted a minority position on several things in the past so I know how this can be interpreted, it just happens that Wilder's words are completely correct. H'e not said anything that's fanciful or inappropriate, just that we must continue with a positive mindset and do our very best, I can't see why anyone would disagree with that.

I do wish people would read things properly before commenting. I never said half empty people were ALL older folk, I said mainly. I also never said ALL younger fans made up those who are optimistic.

I also believe there is a place for Clappers & also those that are vocal on criticising. I certainly can't imagine why anyone would feel the need to get on the teams back this year. It has been a superb year, no matter what. Everyone ought to be encouraging the side from start to end in my opinion.
However, when there have been awful seasons & my God there have been plenty, bad management, bad players, bad attitudes will never be changed if everyone stood up & clapped all game. Vocal disgruntlement has hastened the end of many a disaster, which would have continued endlessly with clappers.

Ditto. Where have I said that you said it was ALL old older/ younger fans? Im saying that labelling the type of supporter by age is generally a misconception as with everything else in life. I agree with what you say apart from that up to your last sentence. Vocal disgruntlement probably has hastened the end of a disastrous regime or two but there’s a time and place for it. During games it’s has also negatively affected our players’ confidence and so this is a time for every Blade to stay strong and do whatever we can. Not throw the towel in.
 
The fact is that we go 2nd with a win today, then later Leeds play a team fighting for their lives. Even if they win, we will have three more games to re-apply the pressure, two of which kick off before Leeds. Start winning games and we have every chance.

Time for giving up isn’t now is it..

Hopefully I’m not still asleep but I’ve just woke up to a Wigan victory..
