Apologies in advance for the ramble. I feel like I needed this. Maybe it'll help some others too.
Saturday afternoon, I was crushed. I bet we all were. Fans in the stands, players on the pitch, the rest of us following Soccer Saturday or on social media. It took me half an hour ‘til I stopped staring at my phone screen drafting but not sending tweets to other fans taking the p*ss. Tweeting at rickywilsonismyhero1999, fourfingeredjake1992 and bouncingbaztheowl would’ve felt good for a nano-second but gave them what they wanted. I got off my arse, reminded myself it will be alright and downed a rum and coke.
And then Leeds beat an absolutely sh*te Wednesday team. Back down again.
I know I’m not alone. We all feel like this for so many reasons. We’ve seen it before. We know what’s coming. It always happens to us. Why are the football gods against us. Why did we sit back. Why did we just let the initiative slip. Why have we stopped playing the way that we know.
But mainly, why do we all care so much?
‘Cos that’s the thing. On days like Saturday, we wish we didn’t care. We wish we could be happy that we’re doing so well. We wish we could get over things quicker, react in the right way. If this doesn’t apply to you, I envy you.
Or maybe I don’t. Maybe it’s the deep misery that makes the elation so good.
But in moments like this, misery doesn’t help. And the more I read about the impact on players, the more I think about what a player reading this forum would think.
That’s why we need to pull ourselves together and, as fans, go again. It’s utter toss to think that we don’t make a difference.
This campaign has four huge games left. Every player in this squad, every person on the staff, to a man and woman, has been heroic this season. Absolutely everyone has played their role in getting this club to where they are against the odds. I’ve never seen fans so together behind a team and manager and staff. I’ve never been so happy to traipse up-and-down the country following a football team with thousands of others in the same boat. No matter what happens, this set of people will go down in Blades history.
It’s great because I feel proud telling everyone about us. Everyone in my office in London knows I’m a Blade. Everyone I play football with on Sundays knows I’m a Blade. My girlfriend of a year has sacked off her Norwich-supporting family and become a Blade. Mates who support Chelsea, Liverpool, Man Utd, ask me about Chris Wilder. They back Billy Sharp to score goals, they stick us in accumulators.
Now isn’t the time for division. Any player reading this, know that we’re behind you. We might hurt sometimes, and show it in the wrong way, but it’s because we care. It’s why we pack out away ends and fill our home stadium.
There’s every chance we sneak into the automatics. There’s every chance we don’t, and end-up in the playoffs. And if that happens, there’s every chance we miss out. But, whatever happens, we’re in this together.
