Stewards

I think there needs to be consequences for this (and other) actions. But, I would simply start small. A fan on the pitch. Missile lobbed on (as per Hillsborough). The Ref takes the players off for 15 minutes calming down. Warnings are banged on the big screen. PA announcements. At least then, you're in a warnings process towards forfeiting the game, points deductions, ground closure. The innocent crowd are impacted by the 15 minute delay, but that's kind of the point. There will be consequences.

Still no for me. Any sort of collective punishment is unjust and unfair. It would be like punishing the entire English population if one English bloke went abroad and killed somebody. Unfortunately some things cannot be prevented because some humans are twats. We can plan for and try to prevent them (stewarding, CCTV., police) but just like every day life some things cannot be prevented.

Give the stewards a tazer and tazer the fuck out of anyone running on to the pitch and when they are down give em another blast. The fuckers.

After yesterday's incidents at Birmingham and Arsenal with pitch invaders going on and attacking players (yeah i know, first time you've heard of this)

I think stewards and how they operate seriously need to be looked at.

I know they get paid really little so they don't have a care in the world, but if so - then literally what is the point in paying them? I'm assuming due to health and safety regulations they are needed but they're basically only there to point people to their seats.

None of them know first aid, so it won't be anything to do with if anyone needs medical attention at a match, none of them are remotely bothered about being there (hoods up, watching the match or just staring into thin air)

I think it was at the game against Reading, a person ran on the pitch, walked past about 30 stewards who were all sat down, didn't even get off their seats. It boiled my piss. Do your fucking jobs.

There was only 1 who actually chased him, he was probably a steward supervisor... but literally what is the fucking point in having stewards if they are not doing their job of doing more than just pointing people to their seats.

They have stewards sat down at the bottom of the stairs, watching the match. Are they not supposed to be making sure that people are not about to run onto the pitch? You don't get paid to watch the football. We all pay to watch the football, you don't get to watch it for fucking free and do fuck all when it's actually time to do your job AND get paid for it too.

Don't care how little they get paid, if they want an increase they should start a fucking union and go on a march outside downing street. As they're not doing that, they're clearly alright with how much they get paid and should do their jobs.
Deary me......moan about the stewards, moan about the police...”to heavy handed” they say, then “useless” they say.......I think it’s clear if some fans could stop behaving like knobheads we wouldn’t need to have either....but oh no it’s “part and parcel of football”. Look how many of the Birmingham crowd cheered when that cretin ran on and punched Grealish!!.......the stewards and police have a thankless job....sorry if that’s a bit radical for a few on here!

My mate used to steward in London. Got smacked at Millwall and got £20 for his trouble. Double what he normally got paid. Why would you risk your life for £10?

That's the worst part of it, Brummies cheering what could have been far far worse.

I don't agree completely. I believe in collective responsibility, which is quite unfashionable, I know, but in the case of a football club there is a football supporting culture that develops amongst the fans. Clubs have worse reputations than others; as has been pointed out, he was cheered on, not booed off. These things have to be judged case by case, but I don't see anything wrong with a punishment that affects the whole club in this instance.

Don't know how stewards are copping for so much flack on this, it's dibble that are paid an absolute fortune by football clubs to police the games, where was plod when required?

Football clubs have to pay for every Copper inside the ground, outside in the public domain the tax payer picks up the tab. Consequently clubs try to minimise the Police and maximise the stewards.

Incidentally didn’t one of the BCFC stewards get carted away by West Mids finest for kicking Grealish during his goal celebrations?

Or did I dream that?

You'd have to be pretty mad to try that though! The Police would look into the profile of the fan responsible, see that they'd never attended a match before at the club they were trying to get points off and then see the history of them supporting another rival!

Crazier things have happened in sport.

It's been commonplace (not just in football) for players of a team to throw results for financial gain

Spain once fielded 10 able bodied people in a 12 person basketball team in the Paralympics.

Marathons have been won by people skipping part of the course, or being replaced by a lookalike/brother/sister (who were often discovered because they set unprecedented times).

Rivals of sporting stars have been physically attacked with the intention of disabling them (by fans or by proxy of rivals: Monica Seles, Nancy Kerrigan, etc).

It's a crazy world, and competitive people with an interest in success (organisations, fans and sportspeople) sometimes do stupid shit. It's just a bad precedent to set. I agree it's likely to be discovered, but that doesn't stop it happening in the first place.

Agreed . Get the fences back up.untill we clear our game of the knobheads . Forget the Police, forget the Stewards, this is OUR problem and we need to sort it . The Government needs to act too though . I'd bring back public birching to run alongside multiple year prison sentences too ( I'd bring back national service too but that's a topic for another thread )

The issue is that the majority of stewards aren’t licensed to just “go and grab people”, they’re there purely for customer service and H&S in the event of an emergency/evacuation. Licensed stewards are the ones that carry out bag searches or are usually deployed in small teams to respond to trouble. These, however, cost the club considerably more to employ.
Correct and they have acredited SIA badges on their arm.

The ones in the South are always happy to have a chat to old Maurice and Ada about their bunions while a queue builds up behind them.
I just stay in seat in the south stand now for 10 mins and show appreciation and clap the players off.
Too many old 'uns racing to get out 3 mins into stoppage time, then struggling up the stairs and holding everybody up!

I am about to start being a steward for Kent cricket club. A few facts, after tax and NI I will be earning £5 an hour, plus as much tea as I can drink. I am there to assist, guide and try and help people in the events of a query, minor matter or to assist in an evacuation. I have no powers of detention, arrest or any hands on activity (I am not SIA trained). I am guided by my supervisors who have had training, but not in doing the job of security or Police, who are paid a lot more than £5...

I am doing it as I fancy it, think I can be all right at it, can afford to work for less than a pint of craft beer in my local and cause I enjoy being part of sport. I know cricket is very different but I think the blame the stewards elements should understand the facts before the criticism.

As an aside, when was the last time we saw any of our own challenge some of our idiots? Would some of our lot have clapped the Grealish twat if it was a Blade or actually challenged those who did the clapping? I know it’s hard but sometimes people have to stand and be counted and do or say something to stop things, rather than point and blame the most obvious target. There’s a lot wrong in football, I’m just not sure that the stewards are the worst offenders...

In an insane industry like football, there will be insanity. Here's how it will play out. (example) Bluenose punches Grealish from behind, Grealish shoulder is broken in the incident, Villa can't pick Grealish for 6 matches, but still pay his wages, Villa sue the fan for Grealish's wages & as they miss out on promotion also sue him for the money they would have made in the Premier League. That's millions, which he hasn't got. But, him & his family basically lose everything. Punishment under the law - 14 weeks in the big house - is one thing, but pursuing for compensation is a whole new ball game. And......
If Villa don't feel they can get financial satisfaction by suing the fan, they just sue Brum on the basis their negligence caused the problem.
The insane wages & insane money in the Premier League make this scenario inevitable one day. Lose out because of a criminal act by someone - sue.

Nice idea but you don't/can't sue for criminal injuries, hence the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board.

I blame austerity and the tories personally. This guy wouldn't have behaved like that if he'd got a youth club to visit in his formative years.

Anyone remember the 2 stewards at Barnsley ,must have been in the 80's. When we used to be on the side where the dugouts are ,one steward held a Blade with his arms round his back while another nutted him in the face. His nose was smashed in really bad and it caused a near riot. I think the steward was charged ,which was the best thing for him as he really was a dead man walking at one point. There was scrapping all the way up that winding hill to the Outpost and in there too ,it was the era of violence but that night was unbelievable and the stewards helped it along.

New bloke starting tonight.

Somebody called Foley.

I understand that if it kicks off he'll soon sort it out.

Fair points. I would go a bit further, and say that crowds ultimately have to be self-policing. There is no proper way to police a crowd of 25,000 if the vast majority don't want to behave in a reasonable way. The majority have to make their views clear when people go on the pitch, throw things, etc. That is not just at the time, but in social media comments as well. That was depressingly not the case in Birmingham on Sunday. Such individuals must be be made to feel totally ostracised, rather than mini-heroes.

Lost count of the times more so last season that away fans ran on spent 10 minutes doing the fucking river dance around the 18 yard box and then we’re allowed to return to seats without any comeback

Has there been any news about the steward who had a pop at Grealish in the celebrations and got dragged away by the police?
