The dirty Leeds thing is slightly old hat now but still fun to needle them with. It came from the 70's when Don Revie invented gamesmanship and had them kicking the shit out of everyone else. We had other (smaller) fish to fry at the time and their big rivals were Liverpool and Chelsea if I remember rightly.
The 1970 FA cup final between Leeds and Chelsea is an all time classic and required viewing for all serious students of the game.
Here's a tiny clip for the curious. Warning: those of a nervous disposition should look away now:

Great stuff that. Did you notice the absence of the mob of players surrounding the referee waving imaginary cards. No argy bargy from the Leeds players. You want to know why? Its because Bremner was already plotting his revenge before his head even cleared.

And if any team deserves to lose it's those bastards. My Leeds supporting 'friend' is notable by his absence recently. :)

I've got an acquaintance who supports Leeds and he loves rubbing it in when they win and get into the top 2 but when they lose he goes missing! I just don't contact him unless he does me first!

As a random sample of one, a Wednesday fan I play footy with says he would prefer us to go up over Leeds.

I suspect that’s because Leeds are a bigger outfit than the Blades and thus a more natural rival to Wednesday. :)

Its close on Porktalk and their ideal one would be Norwich and WBA, but out of us and Leeds most seem to begrudgingly prefer Leeds.

To be fair, it was just a tad high.....

He's not a Wednesday fan.

I don’t think anyone was confident bremner even had a head for a minute or two after that

I always think for the size of their city, and that they have the pull as the big club in West Yorkshire, plus they pull in from North Yorks, and parts of East and South Yorks, that they flatter to deceive as a genuinely big club. Elland Road as a ground is no great shakes and never has been and prior to the Revie era they didn't particular have much history. Post Revie, they've spent 23 years at least outside the top flight, and 3 of those in the third tier.

If football history had turned out different and Sheffield would have only had one professional team it's likely that team would have been a big hitter alongside the likes of Man U and Liverpool.

Sheffield = football city, Leeds = rugby city.
Spot on except that you forgot to mention Northampton, Aylesbury and Scandinavia amongst their hotbeds of support

I'm not sure, there could be plenty. I'm just pointing out that hating Wednesday isn't a prerequisite for supporting United, nor should it be.
If any Blade would rather see the pigs go up over Leeds then they would seriously need to reconsider what sport they’re getting involved with. :)

We have one real rival and nobody in this sport wants their rival to do well at anything, that’s not football at all.

If what you're saying is true (and I don't necessarily think it is) then surely you'd want Wednesday to join us in promotion?

If we only have one real rival, surely we'd want to play them and beat them, should we go up.

No I wouldn’t mate, certainly not.

They can be our insignificant rival to be honest if we outrun them for the rest of my life. :)

I don't think you've quite got the hang of this local rivalry stuff yet ;)

Surely if they're insignificant they can't really be much of a rival? Doesnt seem to be much fun in that.

Obviously not! I'm certainly in the minority by the looks of things!

My point is that, while it's great to have rivalries with local clubs, I prefer competitive rivalries.

During the 16/17 season I didn't give Wednesday a second thought: Bolton were the team to beat and to an extent Coventry after their antics.

This season, while I still would be delighted to see us beat Wednesday, beating the teams around us like Norwich and Leeds gives me more satisfaction from a football point of view- every point is valuable, but some are worth more than others in my opinion.

There would be a lot of fun seeing our main rival flounder in the lower echelons of English football, how could that not be fun? We’d never have to play them and we’d be laughing our heads off every day. :)

Maybe for you, I wouldn't take much pleasure in it.

I'm keeping my powder dry and hoping I can give him shit at the end of the sason

Leeds have played in a European Cup Final and been Champions of England within living memory.

They dwarf every other team in Yorkshire put together.

Doesn't change the fact that they are ….. and always will be ….. DIRTY LE**S SCUM !! o_O;)

And they should be shit on at EVERY possible opportunity my friend :D

Leeds fans are such a lovely bunch... I saw at least 3 bottles thrown at the QPR goalkeeper :# and I remember the Bramall Lane upper seats been ripped up and thrown on the field... like I say Leeds Fanz are a lovely bunch!

Well now you’ve presented me with all the evidence Mr Health and safety officer you can give Leeds 4,600 tickets in one of the most decrepit stands in the country. :)

I don't.

I hope Leeds go up with us.

I dislike Norwich more than Leeds.

I couldn't care less about Norwich. I am utterly ambivalent (apart from match day, of course).

Watched Leeds absolutely smash Coventry at the Ricoh a few seasons ago, their fans managed to make an atmosphere in the Soulless Stadium.

On balance.. don't care. I only care for the Blades.*

*Hate the Rustys.
