Frank Lampards Derby County...

You're right, you'd be splitting hairs to decide between them.

I guess I'd have to lean towards Lampard, but not based on anything other than he's less of a twat. :)
If I had to guess which will be more successful in the long term, it would be Lampard, for the same reason.

Not sure twatiness is a judge of a good manager or not, Ferguson wasn’t exactly Mr Congeniality but he did ok
He wasn’t a twat. It’s not about being ‘nice’ to people. Plenty of Blades supporters think Warnock is a twat but many players who’ve worked under him think he’s great. Same with Ferguson. Gerard comes across as a little sullen and not a great communicator. He didn’t appear to be a particularly good captain for England and a self obsessed one at Liverpool, hence the nickname ‘Stevie Me’.

last nights result means we are still 10 points ahead of 7th and 14 ahead of 8th

getting in the play offs was possibly a dream pre season if we could improve a bit

1 Norwich 33 18 9 6 65:42 23 63
2 Sheffield Utd. 33 18 7 8 58:34 24 61
3 Leeds 32 18 7 7 53:36 17 61
4 West Brom 33 17 9 7 67:42 25 60
5 Middlesbrough 32 14 12 6 36:24 12 54
6 Bristol City 31 15 8 8 40:30 10 53
7 Derby 32 14 9 9 43:37 6 51
8 Nottm Forest 33 11 14 8 46:38 8 47
9 Birmingham 32 11 13 8 49:40 9 46

More of a nightmare with our po track record ;)

Ferguson would defend his players to the end, he'd even blame the kit before blaming them.

I've already noticed Gerrard having a minor pop at his players at times - great if they respond, but seems like a recipe for mutiny in my book.

It’s difficult to compare. Rangers are a big fish in a small pond. He’s improved them but they were in a bit of a mess.

I don’t think either have got it wrong but I don’t think either have got their club exceeding expectations. Basically, they’ve both done OK.

Gerrard, to say he's managing a team that were allegedly close to administration for a second time seems to have had free reign in the transfer market. He must have brought in at least 15 players during his tenure and to be 8 points behind a very poor Celtic team is an underachievement.

However, they did beat Celtic in the league recently, their first time in god knows how long. So automatically he'll be a hit with the locals.

Lampard, after a very decent 4 months seems to have hit a wall and the fans are starting to turn on him already.

I suppose what we don’t know is how the Rangers players feel Gerrard is with them. It could be similar to Ferguson and Warnock for all we know. The point I was trying to make, possibly poorly, is how others view a manager, twat or non-twat, matters not at all. If he is successful in forming a harmonious team spirit and has success what others think is irrelevant. Most Wednesday fans call Wilder a twat but that doesn’t make him unsuccessful or indeed a poor manager.

In term of Lampard and Gerrard I’m not convinced that either will be a great success but time will tell.

I’m no Gerrard apologist but as an addit I never blamed Gerrard for the penalty, dive that it was, I blame the idiot who gave it knowing there was no contact. I do think some people on here will always colour their view on him for that one incident. In recent times he was in the top three English midfielders, where in the top three is open to debate, and I would have loved to see a player like him playing for us at BDTBL.

As I said in the post you first responded to, it’s a guess. I’m not convinced he has the personality to be a successful manager. That’s all.

I was having the same discussion with my mate last night. He’s not done badly, he’s no Weir, but far from spectacular. He’s still got a lot to learn.
He's done ok. He's done as well as any other very average manager.

If Derby finish 7th this season i'd hardly call that a success.

Are you sure about that?

Don't get me wrong - they have a massive wage budget

FL - Wasn't responsible for the majority of it though and only had a bit to play with (evidenced by Jan trf window signings)

Derby appear to be perennially poor in the second half of the season since god knows when, at least the last 4/5 seasons.

Lampard has brought in over 10 players, many prem loans from his old buddies and spent over 12m.

Hate to see what he can do 'when the reigns are off'.

A lot of their problems stem from the 'old guard' the likes of Carson , Keogh, Bryson etc. - many of which will be gone at the end of this season. very similar to when wilder got the job with us.

Many of the players brought in were identified before he started so I wouldn't class these as 'his signings'

Given Derby's record of sacking managers, do you think he will be there next season if they finish, say, 10th?

Difficult to say - if it was me I would keep him. As you identify they sack mangers left right and centre - which is the route course of their problems and has resulted in a bloated squad on high wages.

But if there was a time to change - it would be at the end of the season with so many out of contract giving the new guy chance to make his stamp.

How many have they sacked under Mel Morris or whatever he’s called?

Ca't say I particlary agree with you. Regardless of whether he inherited the players or not, he's still managing a club with a high wage bill.

I also think it's a bit of a myth that he "only had a bit to play with" - he's signed 11 players (either loans or permanent), plenty of which will be costly, on big salaries. Their wage bill last year was £38m (to put that into perspective that was double ours) and based on their transfer dealings, I can't see that figure being reduced by much, if at all.
Other than Birmingham (who have breached FFP), no club without parachute payments are spending close to the amount they are.

I presume you are referring to the incident on opening day and Rob Styles. That incident didn't irk me for Gerrard's part in it at all.
However, roll forward to the return at Anfield and the absolute mockery of a penalty for him going down like a sack of spuds after a brush with Kozzy and you're in prime "fucking cheat" territory. Despised him since then.

Styles literally said to them both...look lads, if he goes down again, I'm giving a pen.

Of course, who'd expect Gerrard to then stay on his feet.

6 I believe. (In under 4 years)
Since Morris took over they’ve had six managers including Wassall, who I think was a caretaker. I’d actually forgotten about Chris Powell and Nigel Pearson and I’m not sure if Powell was ever permanent or just a caretaker following Ostrich Man’s sacking. They also had Shteve again but didn’t he walk out on them for Newcastle? And Rowett quit for Stoke.

So he definitely sacked Clement and Pearson, not sure about the rest.

I think Shteve was sacked: he walked out for Newcastle but I believe that was his previous spell, pre-morris.

You're right about Rowett though.

According to wiki he was sacked both times. I’m not sure why I’m surprised.

It's funny actually, because up until new year, QPR were flying and were only a win from the top 6....almost lost every game since and they're in a relegation scrap now.

He's massively underachieved having been heavily backed in the summer, whilst calling in big favour from the likes of Chelsea.Derby aren't at the end of their FFP cycle as someone suggested earlier. FFP is rolling; there is no end. People forget Derby blew us out of the water with the fee and wages they've given Waghorn. I'm not sure whether they'll stick with him if they miss their minimum target of playoffs, but I think so just for continuities sake and to avoid the media backlash they'd recieve for sacking the media darling. Somehow the media have decided he's doing a great job. If he was any established championship and missed out on the play offs, he'd be gone.

I was listening to 5lIve on the weekend and in the lead up to the games the guy on 5lIve sports said in passing what a great job Lampard has done this season. Zero progress for millions spent...

Should have put this in the 'Pundits' (know fuck all about football) thread, Swiss.

Lampard is one of those 'can't do any wrong, bet his farts don't stink, Lineker' types. Massively underperforms at Derby but hey! Could do a job at Chelsea!

But that's football in this country. If Warnock keeps Cardiff up, he should be in line for Manager of the Year. Ditto if CW takes the Blades up.

But they won't be.

Just as Wilder predicted... All these big spending failures like Derby,Forest,Villa etc will be having another fire sale in the summer.
