We perhaps might be a bit more conservative, especially against the better teams but I find it hard to imagine that we'd change to back 4.



I feel our one advantage is that CBs with the footballing ability of O'Connell or Basham aren't too common.

I think we would need experience, especially at the back.

I wouldn't go with hendo in the nets - perhaps try for Butland at Stoke and read this morning that Cahill is out of contract at season end and at 33 could do a job. back 3 of Egan, Cahill and JOC might be good. Perhaps Egan and Cahill in a CB pairing in a 4.

Could see a 3, but we'd need some experience. Perhaps Bash sat in front of a 3. Lets hope we have those decisions to make.

On the topic of England, last summer's World Cup exploits had shades of Wilderball to them.

Guardiola's 4-3-3 also has a tendency to morph into something simalar when Fernandinho drops back too, but with 1 striker, rather than 2.



I think you're right. Although he'd probably need wingers/wide forwards to change anything too drastically and I'm not sure he's ever had the resources to bring enough in of what he needs.

You obviously had a fair bit of foresight then, as I personally remember being entirely unconvinced by the team sheet when he first made the switch - how wrong I was.

It's a nice unrelated and unprovoked rant, but you've forgotten to aim some of your vitriol at Fleck.

As for England; I agree they had a favourable draw. Though I'm not sure I agree that Southgate is useless - I think it's too early to tell yet. Perhaps you should reserve judgement too if your initial assessment of Wilder is anything to go by?

This has got me thinking, in the clough and Adkins days, I’d check the bbc website when I was at work and I’d be looking at the line up and I’d have no idea which player was in what position. Now I can tell straight away and I’m sure that’s refreshing for the players too.

Whether you think they’re garbage or not, they did, at times, try to push their wide central defenders forward to create overloads, like we do.

Nope, was the usual formation with Stevens in the O'Connell position and Johnson at left wing back.

I’ve been surprised that a few have said this. That wasn’t the game I was watching – thought it very immediately became clear that we went with Baldock and Dowell as wingbacks with the 3 at the back, though I admit to looking for that as it’s what I predicted when the teamsheet game out. Wilder said as well that Dowell played the whole game at wingback.

To me it looked like we started with 4 at the back but went to 3 after about 5 mins or so
