I was only briefly into it [as in the american stuff] during the late 80s when the Ultimate Warrior, Jake the Snake, Million Dollar Man, Heart Foundation, Rick Flare and Hogan, to name but a few, were going at it.

I never once considered it a sport, just well choreographed entertainment and ultimately I always respected the hard work and professionalism of the performers. These guys, and later girls, put themselves through years of training and had to commit to a very strict lifestyle in order to maintain their levels of performance. They are effectively highly skilled and incredibly fit stuntmen with nerves of steel.

Over a wrestlers lifetime their bodies endure horrendous amounts of damage and consequently they rarely age well. Only a select few make the big bucks as well, so a lot end up old and broken.

Many of them no doubt are. The figure you have chosen (coincidence on your part to be fair) looks like Andre the Giant. As far as I'm aware he didn't take Coke or Steroids, he suffered from a condition called Gigantism. He was however a prolific drinker, on a scale that made Bill Werbuniuk look like an amateur.

He died relatively young (late 40's I think) as his condition (and no doubt his drinking) put an enormous strain on his heart.

But I take your point, many of them do whatever it takes to bulk themselves up, often pain relief too. It rarely ends well...................

Yes that was utterly tragic. Terrible incident that apparently 'had been coming' for a while, although the exact detail would have been difficult to predict. You could see in his demeanour something was a bit different about him - bit like Ken Shamrock, looked forward to ripping someone's head off. Bit like Punchy.
