Sorry, what ???
He'd have ripped the division a new arsehole
Everybody is judging him based on him getting glandular fever and missing most of the season

He'd have crucified this division single handedly and until we stop selling we will never achieve anything

The sad thing is, if we were in the Premier League we'd still lose our players to fucking Bournemouth

Get what you're saying but maybe wait until the end of the season to see if we achieve something first.

The Brooks money could fund this club for 2 years. We've already strengthened with one lot, we could strengthen again in the summer with his sell on clause.

The sale of Brooks alone could get this club promoted.

GLTTL
Ever thought if we'd have just held on to the end of the season he could have funded us for the next four seasons and got this club promoted THIS season FFS,

Massively undersold, along with all the rest, I can't be arsed to type the list, you all know who they are, just look at some of the best performing players in the relevant buying teams. It pisses me off big time.

But logic suggests we’d be far weaker this season if we hadn’t sold Brooks.
For starters where would Brooks play in our formation?
His best position is winger. Wilder has toyed with wingers (Nathan Thomas) but they’ve never fit in to his system.

Whilst ever he was playing for us in the Championship he would be untried at top level, keeping his value down.
No Championship players ever get sold for massive fees, it’s once they start playing in the PL their value rockets.
Also in our team he’d have struggled to impress and would have been mainly impact sub.
Wilder was never going to rip up his tactics and revert to 442 just to accommodate a young player no matter how talented he was.

We should have loaned him to Bournemouth like WBA loaned Rondon to Newcastle.

Something to think about in the future? He gets to be a Billy big bollocks in the prem, gets more valuable, if we go up he's had experience, if we don't sell him for big(ger) bucks.

Pointless now though innit. He's gone, and when Bournemouth lose him for 55mill or something daft we'll have ended up getting £20+m for him which is very good.

The Brooks money was not used for Egan or Norwood or Henderson or anyone else before Madine. So the money hasn’t (yet) been used to hugely increase our promotion chances. That looks like it could change tomorrow, but as it stands his sale has enabled us to bring in Gary Madine and Kieran Dowell on loan. Do those 2 really improve our chances of promotion more than a now £50m+ rated, glandular fever free David Brooks?

Debatable. He’s miles above anything we could hope to sign

Every club seeks their best players.
Liverpool sold Saurez and Coutinho
Man United sold Beckham and Ronaldo
Spurs sold Modrich, Bale and will no doubt cash in on Kane.
The trick is wheeling and dealing, re-investing the cash from the sales as wisely as possible.

At least we rarely sell our best players these days.
Think the last best player we sold was Harry Maguire, who had simply outgrown the club.
A league 1 club can never compete with a PL club for a player approaching the end of his contract.
Also to be fair yo Harry he was a loyal servant, it would have been cruel to hold him back and force him to keep playing in league 1.

Messi at Barcelona = best player in the world
Messi playing for Argentina = a very good player but no where near his Barcelona form.

No one is able to answer the simple question.
Who would Brooks replace in our 1st team? Which position would he play?

Players play differently and perform better or worse in different teams/ different roles etc.

If Brooks was still here...he would more than likely be mainly impact sub. No one knows really....another theory is if we forced him to stay he could have sulked and become demoralised missing out on a massive pay rise and playing in the PL.
He might have been crap for us this season if he’d stayed.

Pre extremely serious illness, he was sheer class for us as part of a front 2. He’d slip in to McGoldrick’s role seamlessly.

Let’s not pretend he’s not far far better than anything we’ve got or could go out and sign for £11.5m

Now I only need "we can't keep them if they want to leave" and it's bingo!

Ps Jamie Murphy was the last best player we sold, a year after Maguire. We now focus on selling anyone under 21 who a PL club wants.

Talent wise Brooks is far better than anything we have

But I’d say Dowell is currently the most talented player at our club and he’s not gaurantee of a start here.
Talent doesn’t automatically make you a top player. Dowell might not even make it at Championship level, who knows?

My point is Messi is consistently the best player in the world at Barcelona, so how come he consistently looks ordinary playing for Argentina? Different team mates, different tactics, different opposition, different manager, different motivation.

Last season Brooks had odd flashes of brilliance but he had little effect on many games and was often outmuscled off the ball.
Everything is different at his new club, doesn’t mean he’d be the same here.

If players were the same at every club then why are we bringing in Scott Hogan?
The Villa fans say when ever he played for them he was generally crap but he was fantastic at Brentford (both Championship level).

I'm no fan of agents in general but it makes a mockery of those queuing up to slag off his 'new greedy leech' at the time.

What a great move he got him.

A massive pay rise and the right move for his career.

It’s a catch 22 situation, he wouldn’t be worth megabucks if he’d stayed with us, the platform of the premier league has elevated his status because he can cut it at that level, we’ve probably got the most we could have in the deal taking into account a sell in clause..

I’d love to see the fruits of the accademy on our pitch and our fans enjoy seeing quality players, sadly only the bank balance is catered for with the accademy the fans, we don’t count..

Absolutely,
And by the same logic, if we got to the Premier League I fully expect us to never sell another player ever ever ever unless it was to Chelsea, Man Utd, Man City, Liverpool or Arsenal

But I'm pretty sure that Watford, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Brighton, Southampton, Burnley, Cardiff, Fulham and even Huddersfield if they stay up would butt rape us big style at the first sight of a couple of million

Now you should know football management doesn’t work like that,

Scott Hogan brilliant at Brentford (best striker in the Championship) goes to Villa and he’s crap or injured ....
Makes you wonder why Wilder is signing him?

Brooks is a winger at Bournmouth, we don’t use the type of player in Wilders extremely effective system.
No player is bigger/ better than the team, unless you’re called Diego Maradona.
We’d have needed to find a role for Brooks in our team and that would have been tricky.
We tried him in the Duffy role but he’s not as good as Duffy in that role.
Brooks would have been impact sub when the game is stretched with more space for him to use his pace.

I'm watching the game now, I don't see Brooks being used as a winger at all

He's played all over the midfield for Bournemouth this season. I've seen him play left wing, right wing, behind a single striker, as part of a front three and centre midfield. He's different class. There should be a lot of humble pie being eaten on here, especially some of the more strident posters who were rubbishing my claims that he'd go to the top of the game. Brooks has been the best player on the pitch against all the top sides this season - with the exception of Liverpool and Man City. He's also been Bournemouth's best player, and has got me watching all their games from the start of this season. At least the old fantasy football teams doing well with my two bargains Maddison and Brooks in it.
Eddie Howe is on record saying if it wasn't for Brooks's glandular fever they'd have had no chance of affording him; despite us being a championship club. Even a blind man could see that.
For my part my view has softened a bit, as we now know Wilder's budget was wholly dependent on the Brooks fee. Still gutted, though; he'd have been the player this generation of fans talked about to their kids. At least we'll always have the bouncing day performance.

i don't want this to descend into a 'we should have got 100 million quid for him' thread...

I just wanted to express how composed he his at premier league level and how quickly he's adapted to the pace.

You could tell he was good last year from the glimpses and cameos but he's quickly gone from strength to strength, let's enjoy the sell on from the inevitable 70/80 million fee next time...

Fair play to the lad
Not been a Blade for a while now has he???

Surely that's hindsight? When we sold him, he'd played 30 games in the 2017-18 season - started just 9, on as sub. 21 times, substituted 5 times and scored just 3. That's 30 appearances in total, so I don't think anybody's suggesting his season was glandular fever-wracked. I doubt if anybody could forsee how he'd step up in the PL. He's now in a team which is better - arguably in every position - than we have. He had the odd stellar moment with us - his goals at Millwall and Leeds, his nutmegging of Jack Cunt etc. and I remember saying to a mate that 'Brooks was one of those very rare players who can get you out of your seat.' But would he have performed consistently over a whole season in the Championship? There was precious little evidence of that based on last season.
Sure it hurts to see DB playing like he did last night, but just watching the highlights on MoTD last night, the PL has plenty of 'stellar, young talent' - who will all have started at a lower level.
Enjoy DB whilever he's on display, it's better than the standard 'He was crap, anyway' when a player is sold from many teams. If he'd have progressed at the Blades in the same way he has at Bournemouth, he would have been a 'gilded bird in a cage' at United.
It’s a big step up. Brooksy showcased his talent in front of 10,227 people today.

And that's how it works. DB will be very rich but, as money increases, so lifestyle expands - cars, houses, birds etc. Brooks will win nothing at Bournemouth, he'll look enviously at players playing in front of 50, 60, 70 thousand fans, earning far more than he does at present and will move to a truly 'big' club.

And the Bournemouth fans will say 'Why did we sell him?', 'Couldn't we have held onto him?' and 'We gave him away'...

On a Cherries-related note, am I the only one who thinks Nathan Aké is a waste of space - a poor man's David Luiz? He's more interested in his hair and he's constantly a 'nearly' player.

I sometimes watch small streams, culverts, dykes and the occasional reservoir. But I'm not that bothered about watching brooks. They babble a lot don't they?

Yeah we can all see that now. But Brooks was a still only a bench warming impact player at the lane. If he was banging in goals and creating chances every game you can negotiate a bigger price.

Could have just as easily gone the other way and he turned out to be a Jordan Slew....we would all be laughing then about how we had pulled Bournemouths pants down.

£11m was a good price for him, a very good deal for the club. We are not wealthy enough to fend off such offers and will have inserted a good sell-on fee that will see at least 10% of a future sale land in our coffers, (OK McCabe and the Princes back pockets maybe)......

I'm delighted for the lad that he is doing well, just as I am for Harry & Kyle.
