What about throw ins? more important
My comment was in reply to so.eone stating that we would do better if we crossed it earlier. I was pointing out that we cross it more than any other team.

In that context, I'm not really sure what your point is

Again, as per my previous post in this thread, anything is possible. Hull now have 7 wins in 8 games, this league is still wide open.

Just waiting for Brucie to launch HMS play-offs at the sty.

Anybody who thought we couldn't get automatic is not only completely stupid, but not even a proper Blade.

#hindsightqueens

But no it is a pleasantly surprising turn of events.

It's been a particularly good week with WBA losing Barnes then dropping points along with Norwich.

I maintain what I said before, we need a good January window, and the fans need to turn up. Those things happen, then it's possible. We're already halfway there with the signings, but we should capitalise on our position and look for more. It would be madness not to.

I honestly thought autos had gone when we were nine points behind the top two and we seemed to have stalled results wise.

How happy am I to be totally wrong (although anything can happen-we all know how that can pan out)

However, we seem to have stepped up a gear somehow and I think the quality of the signings eg Egan and Norwood are now showing their true worth and for me they (amongst a few others) are the difference in being an average Champ side to being a side that genuinely can challenge for the promotion places.

The recent acquisitions of Dowling and Madinio will also add quality to the group. Don't know much about the Everton lad but I really think that the goal machine will be a good addition to the attacking options. I realise that he has baggage and has not always made the correct decisions in his 'private' life. The press always have a field day when reporting on sports people and often these things are much exaggerated.

Great time to be a Blade at the moment, loving what Wilder is doing - what a legend.

just happy we are improving on last season
a play off spot looks realistic now, and still within range of an auto is all we can ask for just now
all we are doing is returning to our 2002 to 2009 run where we were always in the hunt

in contrast Wendies have not been in a top 2 spot in the championship , or it in any guise, after xmas since the eighties

He's signed a completely new spine to the team...

Hendo
Egan
Norwood
Dowell
Madine

Strong spine!

The away games at Norwich, Leeds, WBA, Pigs will be the deciding factor. Come out of that lot with 6 points our home run in should get us very close.

Credit to Wilder & co we’ve really taken our chance and capitalised on Norwich’s tricky run of games.

Leeds now have to play Stoke(a) Norwich(h) & Boro(a) in 3 of next 4 games! hope we can keep this run going as they’ll drop points in those fixtures.

27 to guarantee play offs first!

At home 5w. 2d. 2draws. = 17

Away. 2 wins. 4 d 4 draws. = 10

After today this looks very doable

After this we are battling with 2 maybe 3 others for the second auto spot.

All the top teams have been through “purple patches” and bad patches. We are no exception. We are currently in a purple patch which has taken us from verge of top six to second meanwhile Norwich and
Leeds have both had poor patches. Call me a pessimist or a realist but if we have another poor patch (which we probably will) we will drop down a bit. We just have to follow the winning habit if we can and hope that the other teams around us have a bad patch or at least a longer one than us.
That goal we gave Leeds at the Lane is so frustrating. Without that I think it would have been 0-0. They would now be on 52 points and we on 51! It’s another if only....

I shan’t be counting the chickens until the last match is played.

The thing that should be absolute in everyone’s mind now is we are a top 6 contender.

I’d be surprised if we don’t continue that

Given that the league is so tight there is optimism we could remain top two.

End of March we’ll have a clearer idea on whether top 2 is reality or not.

just stating the facts
50 points with 19 to go
I think at least 10 are winnable
we should do the play offs , but 1 or 2 in the division is the safer option

'19 to go......'

With this management team and these players we have the capabilities of winning them all.

Talking of Facts can anyone clarify if it's correct that history may be repeating itself......Didn't Liverpool win the old Division 1 title the same year we finished 2nd behind Weeds and got promoted ?

In 1994 we were relegated from the Premier league under suspicious circumstances. It took us 12 years to return.

In 2007 we were relegated from the Premier league under suspicious circumstances..........

An amazing change of fortune for the Blades. We've turned up, finally and convincingly, we've decided that it's simply not good enough to be also-rans, it seems that the combination of good luck (just so you're aware, I'm generally not a great fan in the idea of good or bad luck), hard work, and self-belief is beginning to deliver for United.

You can't blame anyone who's followed the Blades from acquiring that obscure medical condition - nervosa Bladeitus - cynicism has always gone hand in hand with following the Blades, so we do tend to find reasons for not doing well. Broken promises, an absence of investment, and the selling of our better players has been the Blade's way, but maybe, just maybe, we're finally choosing to ignore the sense of hopelessness that has been our norm. No predictions here I'm afraid, I'm far too canny for that, but a definite sense that we're beginning to dig our heels in, no longer happy to accept second best, with a real appetite for the fight ahead. Of course we can achieve promotion, it's whether we can cross the line that's difficult to forecast.

So far, and up until now, my own interpretation is that our manager and his players have decided to embrace whatever it takes to gain promotion. Things are looking good, no guarantees (which Blade would ever be so arrogant as to give a definitive thumb's up to this?), but there's a definite sense that it might, just might, be our moment to finally achieve promotion. UTMB!

Your previous post said "top 2 very unlikely". Although at least you hadn't written us off for the play-offs.

Nothing’s gone. Not autos. Not promotion. Not relegation. We’ve just reached the half way point of the season. Way too early to say anything like that.
Well, here's my previous post.

At the time of this OP, on 23rd December 2018, the point gap between us and the top and 2nd place was 9 points and 7 points. There were 69 points left to play for.

Our form hadn't been the most convincing over the past month, that's a factor. On the day we'd just drawn at bottom club Ipswich - a match most Blades expected we should have won easily. (Most Blades have still not realised that there are no games at this level that we can expect to win easily).

So, a disappointing run of form, a disappointing result (albeit not a defeat) at the division's bottom team, and a 9 point gap (or 7 point to 2nd place) and these ingredients all combined to convince the majority, let's be clear about that, the majority on here that autos had gone. What I find surprising also is that looking back at some of the posters who shared this view - many of them are intelligent, sensible posters. This is the thing I find most disturbing of all.

I'm used to seeing knee-jerk reactions on here from some of errmm,...how can I put it? err...those with a lower sense of mental acuity. (How's that?). But when you get posters who are normally, sensible, rational, informed, contributors, throwing the towel in on our team's chances, with half a season remaining, well...it just beggars to belief to me. :tumbleweed:

I know all about our past history and the bad luck and curses and horrible things that have happened to our club, that some believe makes us the unluckiest club in the world and therefore doomed to snatch failure from the jaws of victory every time. But...I don't believe any of that.

And this thing I keep hearing..."Oh, it's the Blades way..." meaning we are doomed to cock it up. And I don't believe in that either.

Here we are then - three weeks later - and the Blades are in the top 2.

In three more weeks we could be top! Then again, in three more weeks we could have fallen outside of the play-offs. Either is possible.

I wonder if anyone will change, not just their opinion, but the way they actually look at things, in future? Because that to me, is the most worrying thing of all. If you go through life throwing the towel in on things prematurely, or believing that it's not possible in the first place, then how on earth do you get through life? You certainly won't be getting from life what you could achieve, because negativity breeds more negativity and failure becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

It seems to be ingrained in the Sheffield personality. Thank God I'm from Derbyshire!;)

It's an unwritten rule here abouts, if your born an optimist your an owl if your born a pessimist you a Blade.

We have no control over this were just born that way.... :(

We played them first game and they were indeed champions
Ian rush put a tackle in to destroy Simon Traceys face that would have seen him get jail time nowadays

Disagree completely ,sensible -Blade / deluded - pig. You can be optimistic and sensible. Although some of the sensibles on this thread might want to have a word with themselves
