Whilst on the subject of alternative sports, I was on holiday in Ireland last month and happened to be there at the time of the Irish Hurling cup final. Knowing nothing about the game, I watched it on the telly, expecting to be underwhelmed, but was absolutely blown away by it. The game has everything - pace, aggression, non-stop action and a high level of skill. It is so fast and furious that they play only 35 minutes each way. It is very physical and the players wear protective headgear to guard against flying sticks, but it is not a brutal game - the ref is quick to step in if there is any deliberate fouling. The game is hard to describe - it's a bit like a cross between rugby and hockey, but the ball is whacked in the air - not along the ground, and players can catch it with their hand and run with it, either bouncing the ball on the end of the stick or carrying it like in an egg and spoon race. The skill factor is remarkable - players were racing down the touchline and whacking the ball unerringly between the goalposts from 50 yards or more. They score 1 point for a hit over the bar (the goal posts are 'H' shaped, as in rugby) and two points for a 'goal' in the lower section. There is a goalkeeper to try to stop the 2 point scores. The pitch is big - certainly larger than a football pitch, and the game has a huge following in the Republic of Ireland. Whole villages were festooned with flags in the build-up to the game and many cars carried flags. More than 80,000 fans watched the final and, as far as I'm aware, they were not segregated.
It's difficult to get across the appeal of the game in words, but if you have a chance to see a game of hurling,, do give it a try.
