Old Photos For No Reason Whatsoever

Woody's last home game for us. We weren't to know at the time. I was supposed to start my 6th year at boarding school on the Monday before the match but I wanted to watch the Liverpool and River Plate matches so my dad told my headmaster that "we were going on a family holiday" so I would be returning to school a week later than the other pupils. I was able to watch the matches against Liverpool, River Plate and Palace (above photo) matches. We lost 2-0 but I am glad to have seen Woody's last home game for us! Imre Varadi (also in photo) made his league debut.

Man U v Blades on Easter Monday 1973. We won 2-1. Steve Faulkner's debut. His underhit backpass was pounced on by Brian Kidd who then scored. Billy Derden equalised just before half time. Keith Eddy hit the winner with a fine shot from outside the penalty box. Arnie Sidebottom is the Man U player in the photo. Bobby Charlton's last home game. Leaving the ground in Branson coaches (SUSC Dronfield branch) we tormented the miserable Man U fans who replied with V signs, one or two threatened to throw a brick to the coach. Happy Days!

Correct, but It's the keg version and not the original cask version which, I believe, stopped production some years ago. It now serves generic real ales like Farmers Blonde, Belgian Blue and Old Peculiar. Not great beer wise but a damn site better than other pubs close by. Arguably the best pub in the area.

Yes, Arnold “Arnie” Sidebottom. Like Ted Hemsley, he played cricket as well as football. Played for Yorkshire and also played one Test match for England. Only played 16 games for Man Utd. In 2007, he was voted in at Number 5 in The Times poll of the 50 worst footballers to grace the top division. :)

Anyway, back to the photo. Yes 1972-73, Easter Monday 23rd April. Attendance: 57,280. I was on the terrace with the Stretford End to my right and had a fantastic view of Keith Eddy’s winner.

The season ended well, but after losing 3-2 to Arsenal at Highbury on 3rd March, relegation was a real possibility. We lost 4 out of 5 in Feb/March. The table after the Arsenal game was:

Our fortunes turned with a 1-0 midweek win at Crystal Palace on 13th March. In the last 10 games we won 6 drew 2 and lost 2. The last four home games were entertaining with four wins: 3-1, 2-0, 3-1 and 3-2. There would be two more enjoyable top flight seasons until the collapse and fall starting in 1975-76.

Sweet Baby Jesus and the orphans, I'd weep for a pub in East London serving that line-up of generic ales.
As I said in another thread, you in Sheffield have never had it so good!

If there was one major critiscm of that 70's side then it was its inconsistency.

Sorry about that SEB. I suppose we are the Premier League and you are the National League. I think we forget, or have become blasé, about how good the selection is here. You have my deepest sympathy ;)
