Jake Wright (the defender)

That's him who used to make sure the team saw out games for the win or draw, mostly wins as i seem to remember, proper captain and organiser, last seen in the first team around the same time as Couttsy was a regular. Funny how we've been massively inconsistent (at best) ever since.

A proper captain at centre half and one in centre mid and we might start getting that consistency back.

So you’d drop Egan for him then? Because that’s the only position he can play.

Long term injury last I remember.
What underrated legend he is going to be remembered as over time.

He certainly deserves to be . An absolutely key player in our promotion year and one who showed the difference between a proper centre half and those who look like they ought to be , like Ebanks - Landell and Clarence Frogman Henry ( or summat like that :) )

In a word yes if it means getting back to banging the wins out again. It's all about getting the right balance in the team, that current defence is far from convincing, the lack of proper leaders in defence and midfield is costing us daft goals and points this season. A proper captain barking orders would have ensured we wouldn't have conceded the late goals v Rotherham and Leeds (and that's just off the top of my head).

I said when he was an ever present in the side [and stand by it] that I have never seen a player in a Blades shirt read the game as well as he did. He got some stick for a fe performances in the first Champ season but I never saw why personally and thought he looked well adapted to that level.

I lost count of the occasions where time seemed to slow down around him as he calmly strolled forward through the chaos to clear a loose ball, cut out a pass, or snuff out some sort of threat.

Had we got him a few years younger would have played for us for years and probably ended up as Captain.

Not sure a ‘proper captain’ whatever one of those is can really legislate for Johnson losing the ball stupidly or Henderson kicking the ball straight to the opposition winger

No . I'd play him alongside Egan in a back four - what a combination that would be .

But then , nobody's ever won anything playing with a back four have they ..........

A proper captain (a proper captain being someone who can open their gob and make sure the rest of the team are switched for the duration of the game) would have been telling Henderson to blast the f***er into the stand and a proper captain would have been telling Norwood he had bags of time on the ball (instead of Norwood panicking and putting the ball straight on a plate for the Rotherham equaliser). That's the type of things proper captains do. Please do feel free to "quote me" to your readership if you like on the subject of proper captains.

Don't forget Norwoods fuckwit clearance gifting WBA their equaliser. A raucous shout of time would have prevented a pathetic Stephen Quinn like pointless over the shoulder powder puff punt.

Absolue legend, but are people for real?

He's not better than O'connell or Egan who have been immense this season.

And 'barking out orders' doesn't stop our team making any mistakes by magic.

It's not barking out anything. It's communication. Something that has clearly been lacking given the complete howlers in the last few games.

I think we all know that it is possible to make howlers regardless of communication. Strange how it's clear yet Wilder or the majority on here haven't mentioned it.

The player who receives that is 5 yards over the halfway line and there are 7 Blades players behind the ball. Basham gets skinned, then Fleck and Egan miss the cross while Enda stands there like a lemon.

To blame Norwood for that is mystifying, and worse still, will stop players making anything other than the 5 yard sideways passes fans claim to hate.

Well harsh!

It was a pathetic and unnecessary attempt at a clearance when he could and should have brought the ball down, looked up and found a man
As posted above by another he fucked up against Rotherham as well. I love Norwood but am able to see the whole picture with any of our players and really have no interest whatsoever in blowing smoke up arses

In the eyes of many Wright has never been good enough for us - even when we were in league one. I thought he deserved to play more last season.

Whenever he plays we almost never lose and I don't think I've ever really seen him have a bad game. Except for Fulham at home which was just a clusterfuck of a game.

He's been consistently very good, and the best we've looked defensively over the last two years has been when he's been in the side.

Yet he was one of the first to be dropped during the League One season, which bewildered all of us. We looked shakey without him, and when he was reintroduced back into the team we instantly looked solid.

He was replaced last season and hasn't really played since. Stearman came in for him and in my opinion he wasn't really an improvement, although many claimed he was a 'class above' which I haven't seen at all.

Egan has now replaced Stearman, and he's been a good signing to be fair. But in no way have we looked as solid as we did when Jake Wright was starting consistently.

This is why I'd never make a good football manager, because I'm either clearly missing something or I just know fuck all.

Our shortcomings at the back start at the front, it wouldn’t be crucial if we were knocking the sitters in that every forward seems to miss these days, some are a yard out! Aren’t they..

Also it would be good if some remembered that our defenders are facing a better class of striker in this division, so try to keep that in mind when judging them.

Think we’re doing great with what we have, but the clock is ticking...

Didn’t he return recently to the U23s in his bid to return to fitness?

He'll never get away with being U23!

Thats like when i was playing for Calver U12's as a 10 year old. We played Dove Holes U12's and they were always a physical side. However, on this particular game they put out an entirely different side, beating us 13-1.

They got thrown out of the league after the game though as they were playing 16 year old players with Moustaches!
