Keith Edwards on RS - Time for change?

Can't quite agree with the criticism, but I can see the points you make about Edwards are shared by others.

I've picked out the above from your post as for me, this problem has existed in L1 days, and since we came into this league.

Some fans call it "we've been sussed" - but what ever it is called, we don't seem to have a management/coaching plan to solve the problem.

For two and a half seasons we have generally dominated games against the opposition (we are apparently the 1st team this season to out possess Leeds) yet we fail to capitalise.

A number of said we over play in and around the opposition box - that's fine if it eventually works, but we haven't solved this issue at all.

Keith alludes to getting it in early - and for me it's about mixing it up. He is though absolutely 100% correct about forwards not knowing when or where to go as we fanny about a lot of the time.

This problem is down to the management to solve - one that, at the moment, they don't seem capable of.

We should have won ANOTHER game yesterday, not lost 2 points - it's frustration beyond frustration now for me.

UTB

The point about Keith is that he finds a gripe and then keeps banging on about it. He never explained why the balls weren’t going in. He just said “get it in early”.

He watches us play a lot and he knows better than most that we do try to get the ball in early, but also when that ball is right. We’re a patient side that doesn’t like to concede possession, partly because we commit a lot of players forward that were vulnerable on the counter.

Keith doesn’t explain this. He just says that was wrong and he’s right.

I get that he was a striker, a poacher like billy but we’re playing sides like Ipswich that are fighting for their lives with men behind the ball.

I’d love him to point out different options

The early ball is not the only ball, but when it does go in I’m guessing that it’s got a high chance of success, hence why we try it and why teams fight to stop it

Completely agree about strikers not knowing when it’s going in though. But it’s almost something they have to deal with and be ready for when it does go in

To carry on from Cerebus (good post btw)

Right I will try and be as neutral as poss on this.
Over the many years since football commentary started on local radio..it was Hallam FM that first did live commentary on the Sheffield clubs only on the team playing away though, then the beeb got the rights for local Radio stations to do it.
There have been many good commentators on RS Simon Clarke,Seth Benett, Paul Walker, Andy Giddings there was a guy form Canada (he was very good) but went back to Canada who did it with Paul 1st 20 mins of each half would be him then he would pass the mic to Paul.
We had up until about 2 years ago 3 live commentaris across all frequencies...one on FM, one on AM and one on DAB, the main FM one would be the away sheffield club, AM might have been on of he other south yorkshire clubs and DAB would have been the other sheffield club at home.
As for the co commentators for Utd Keith has always told it as is, yes he can drone on a bit but Keith is just telling it from the heart, you might not hear but I can the passion and fervour he has for united and when things don't go well you can tell that it hurts him not by what he is saying but by the inflections and tone of voice.

As co commentators on RS they all have there own qualities and indivualities, I can remember Dougie Hodgson doing with Paul Walker during an away match on a tuesday, the blades scored and a home fan started giving Paul and Dougie some grief, said supporter then got up and walked towards them, As Paul was taking in mid sentance when when Dougie just ripped his headphones on stood up and started heading towards said supporter who very quickly realised he had better sit down before dougie got to him.
I like Gagey as well, different perspective and also a v good co commentator, I have heard B Gayle do it, good, The beezer he's done it, was also good.

Everyone has their own opinions and that is what it is all about and I can certainly agree about some of the other beeb local radio stations commentary is gash, they are not a patch on Radio Sheffield when it come to covering footy games or local sport.

It could be soon in the next few years that we will lose local footy commentary and have to rely on ifollow (god help us).

Luke Wildman canada guy....just remembered

I would have to drop the name of young Jonathan who has just moved to cover the Dirties amongst the list of decent commentators although he divided opinion. Certainly any of the names you mentioned are a million miles away from the current incumbents who haven't a clue how to generate any excitement into their commentaries, Giddings excepted.

Yes forgot about young Johnathan....

Giddings gets over-exited. Had us diving for t' air raid shelter* many a time.

* Cupboard under t' stairs.

Keith has definitely been a lot more positive since Chris has come in, as have most of us, shout box excepted.
He just talks too much, when play is going on. It's not so noticeable when you just listen to the commentary, but yesterday I watched the game with their comms and so many times he drones on when there is a passage of play that could lead to a goal. Talk as much as you want when the ball is out of play. Learn when to shut up!

More Tea - Tillerman?
Remember the Days of the Old School Yard? We used to laugh a lot! Very appropriate in all sorts of ways - references to Keef (who I like!) and Cat Stevens aka Yusuf Islam (who I also like) in one post! In these politically grim times I take comfort in United doing well (we are, believe me!), being old-ish (but relatively happy, to quote Cat!), and looking forward to the excesses of the season. Happy Christmas to all Blades everywhere!!!

I just wish that Keith would make his comments short .
The commentator will say that shot has gone out for a Blades goal kick . Keith begins to give us some long winded advice on how we should be playing.
The next thing I hear is somehow the ball has worked its way up the pitch and the Blades have a corner.

Yes. Was a big influence on me and my outlook on life as a teenager, looking for a way forward in life.

Used to sing about stuff I thought was important and made me think a lot what life is about and what I wanted to get from it.

Those two albums, “Teaser and the firecat” and “Tea for the Tillerman” are still two of my all time favourites.

Some of the later stuff was average/poor though. Especially when he went all Muslim on us.

A very talented singer/songwriter though and a talented musician with a very distinctive voice.

I don't mind him to be fair, but the one thing that did get on my tits on Saturday was that on a couple of occasions he said "The result isn't important to me, the performance is what counts" hold on Eddy, WTF? so if we played Barcelona style football every week, and finished bottom with 0 points, you'd be happy? I don't think so young man....

Watched it on that ifollow which has RS commentary on it. He was pretty much spot on. Take the usual incident with Baldock not crossing.
We had already played our way in to the box, close to the line of the box running parallel to the throw line. Duffy with his usual trickery has got us there.he is 15 yrd out and played the most beautifully waited pass parallel down the line of the box for Baldock. Baldock then decided to take a touch on that before crossing ti the dismay of KE who is heard to utter over the commentary, Ahrr at the same time as myself and others.
You me and 99.9% of anyone who has ever played, would have put that cross in first time.
Now we aint no Liverpool but check out Sala goal against Wolves for movement of strikers in such a position wanting to run across defender when ball is played in.
EDIT: Merry Christmas mate.

Yeah this was one of them.... yeah perhaps he should've put the ball in, but he didn't, it didn't seem right for him. However, the point is that he didn't... for whatever reason, Keith makes such a big issue about one thing... He doesn't look at the entire game, the way that Ipswich were making it difficult, just saw the Keith Edwards view.... because thats the ball he wanted....which is my point.

How old is KE now? Must be in his 60's. He's been a fixture on Radio Sheffield ever since I can remember and does a decent job. Kevin Gage has done a few too and is also decent, but I wouldn't want to see Keith replaced. He's a fan (as is Gagey) and sometimes gets carried away - but I'd rather the expert summariser was a Blade than someone who supports another team

Strange that no one has suggested Brian the Blade to do the RS job.
I don't know if this would be hilarious or excruciating or wherever he'd just bang on about how good he is, it's worth a shot!
