Washington...

He's very much a runaround kind of player, more suited to being a sub than starting, but handy for a game like tonight without Duffy as it offers a different way to play. Surprised he went off as he's the kind of player you want for an out ball when defending a lead.

I'd still start with Sharp and McGoldrick on Saturday though.

I’ve been very unimpressed with what I’ve seen of Connor Washington before tonight.

But, fair play to him, he showed great attitude, never stopped running, his pace caused them all sorts of problems and gave us an option that we just haven’t had under Wilder. I’d like to see him start alongside Billy on Saturday, as I think of all our striking options, Sharp is the most likely to create opportunities for a quick strike partner.

Perhaps it shows that you shouldn’t judge a player on a few cameo appearances from the bench? Time will tell ;)

He had a really good game and he offers us a decent solution to a problem away from home. I think, with space to play in he has potential.

But for the games where we have teams penned in, we need something different. It would be nice to have a striker who could make a yard of space for himself and get a decent shot off, rather than always relying on service. Leon Clarke during his purple patch last season is the kind of striker we could do with, he was unbelievable at times.

Gutted that he got took out on half way. He was quick enough to beat the other defender and had Leon square too

Yep. Leon made the best out of that poor pass for the winner.......

On a less ridiculous point, Good quick throw from Dogshit Freeman, good run and great cross from Nogood Washington and class finish from Cantscore Clarke.

Oh, and seeing as Lundy had no input in the goal whatsoever he's clearly still gash......

Did great. Very welcome new dimension to the squad. Constant irritant for their defenders- messed with their rythm from the back, which clearly affected the whole team. One of them that probably wont score many, but will cause havoc and others will profit from his work. I also thought it was a harsh sub, but then again, he’s not played that long for ages, and maybe he’s played his way into Wilder wanting to rest him a bit for Saturday?

Well we have the players to put the ball into the channels when he makes those runs. Need to get players into the box to give him options.

Can Washington score goals?

Scored three international goals for Northern Ireland, one coming against against Slovenia, in a friendly and one against Norway in a Uefa Euro 2016 qualifier.

Overall 129 goals in 337 games some of which were non league. So yes he can, and his pace and workrate would tend to make us hope that he might be another good acquisition by Wilder.

I was very sceptical that him and Billy could play together- I thought it was one or the other alongside McG or Clarke. But on tonights evidence, it might be an option for the exact reason you point out. Not saying Saturday is the day to try it, but its got to be worth a look sooner or later?

He's always had talent. It's just getting that consistency and effort out of him.

Washington is like a dog - very fast when chasing the ball, not great when somebody else has the ball!

His pressing needs work - he runs straight at the ball, then when the player goes forward he is beaten. Pressing is about running into the space in front of the player to slow him down.

Away from home, when there is grass behind the opposition, he is the right option though - like Donaldson at Sunderland and Villa last year.

Magic Comes In Many Guises

Washington’s problem is he doesn’t score goals often enough. That’s why his career has fallen flat at other clubs. He’s certainly got pace and I thought he used it to good effect tonight. There was none of the usual trying to create the perfect pass in the 18 yard box bollocks. It was fast attacks and first time balls into the box. I quite enjoyed that.

Looks like dropping out of the top 6 might get delayed if we are not careful . Bad night for the doom mongers.
What's Wilder doing utilising the squad .
He is in danger of showing he knows what he's doing

Tony Gale made the comment during tonights game that Wilder has a squad with more depth than we had last season when we faded away after the Coutts injury.
He also mentioned the fact that Egan was our record buy at £4 million ( thought James Beattie cost £4 mil so Egan had to be more? ) which goes to show what an incredible job Wilder and Knill are doing for us.

Given todays stupid transfer fees and wages we are punching way above our weight. Yes, we all want more, but reality needs to intrude at some point.

Hopefully the owners will realise what we have here at the moment is an extremely competent, ambitious and knowledgable management team and will decide to back them in January to enable a real chance of promotion.

Still, it's always easy to spend other peoples money isn't it?

Considering our outlay compared to those immediately around us we are doing outstandingly well.
4th 1 win off top with 32 goals scored 2nd best in division.
A win over Leeds and Xmas will be a happy time for all

Did you see the run and cross that he put on a plate for Clarke ? Also what has he done to suggest his finishing is awful for us haven’t seen him miss any sitters yet ?

It was a good run and a great cross. Clarkes finish was quality. Hardly "on a plate" though.

I went to the game and concur with what's been said about his workrate and good involvement in the third goal.

Still don't think he's that good though, his touch and dribbling are below average and makes some poor decisions. Fills a gap for nowt though so not knocking the signing.

Not played regularly for ages though, decision making and touch will improve with minutes you'd imagine.

I'll mostly just be echoing other statements on here but I'll get involved anyway.

I thought he put in a real shift last night. He's not the superstar striker we want but he's a strong alternative to Billy and adds depth to our squad. He's not mega fast but he's probably our quickest striker (which frankly I don't think is hard) and he'll be ideal for games where we know we'll have less of the ball. Last night was the perfect game for him. Great cross to Clarke for his goal and he hassled the Brentford defenders all game. Going forward I reckon he'll be an excellent guy to come off the bench and we should have no issue with him starting the odd game either.

He's put himself second in line for me now.

Billy, then Washington.

McG should have a couple of games on the bench as Duffy cover I think.
Totally agree think McG needs a few games on the bench, habit of giving the ball away in dangerous places.Unlucky not to score last night quality save from bees keeper

It just shows that writing players off when they’ve had a couple of cameos is very harsh

As I’d said elsewhere, I hadn’t realised it was him until midway through the first half as he has a similar look and build to Billy from the other side of the ground.

Watched his movement a bit more in the second half and he looked to be stretching them. Not entirely sure that playing off McG was working for him but looked decent alongside Leon and Leon seemed to have more space

Last night is only delaying the inevitable. ;)

When we signed Washington I recalled the comments of QPR fans. The observation was that Washington had one good game compared to several mediocre games.
I can't recall the exact ratio but it was pretty stark. Should be interesting to see how he performs given a run in the team.
