See post #9905Go on Google Earth and search for Abbeydale Picture House, then use street view and move down the road toward town. There is a white double fronted antique shop on the right just below the cinema. Underneath the window with ' Antiques ' painted above it it says 'Temperance Bar ' .There's probably a way that I could link to it but I have no idea how.
I lived in the area and went in a few times with my mates when we were kids. They served sarsaparilla in those pint pots with the handles. We used to drink it making out we were drinking beer. Only problem being it tasted crap!
OI that was my gang ,I never had a perm ,fake tan or pastel shades ,but some didIt all started going wrong when the health food mob moved in....
The Byron is the last bastion of normality, we’ll sort of...
The Brincs in the 80’s was a riot of perming products, fake tan and pastel shaded colours and that was just the gents.
Not forgetting the table football.Had a season ticket there TB in its later guise , loved the Casbah , quality music , good laugh and some quality birds ... and some lacking in quality but making up for it in other ways

Just as it was Dnblade, sure that is the Sarsaparilla bar on the LHS looking at the photo.
have been past some time ago, cannot recall what the cinema is now.

If you go onto Streetview and look at the row of shops on the town side of the old Abbeydale Cinema (same side) there is a shop called Dronfield Antiques. At the bottom of the right hand window it says "Temperance Bar." That's where they had their date. I used to go there myself as a lad after a session (swimming, before anybody says anything) at Heeley Baths.
Why does the word "manking" spring to mind?Woops! Sorry about that, only looked at the last page
Still great minds and all that! I was born in Heeley and lived in a few different places in and around so my old stamping ground when I was growing up.
Interesting thing about the Abbeydale cinema when you started going out with young ladies was that they had a few seats which were 'doubles' purely for comfort reasons you understand![]()
I’m not sure you can tell much from the outside, but it’s still a live music and performance venue.

Spend many nights in there, mainly because my feet were stuck to the carpet. Great for music but the beer was piss.
The photo is from a book by Richard Wiseman & is taken on Orgreave Lane, Handsworth.View attachment 46287 View attachment 46288 A couple of interesting photos I came across earlier today. I think you’ll all know where the second picture is taken, not sure about the green tram though. Some of our oldies will probably remember this failed experiment.

Although I am not from Heeley I had a longstanding girlfriend who was. We went in all the local pubs but I can only remember the Roundhouse, Cuckoo, the one that's now the Brother's Arms and the Sheaf. There were others, but those brain cells have died.
Thompson's Wards was indeed the best I ever sampled. Plus it was best behaviour in the Roundhouse in his tenure. A proper old fashioned pub landlord. You went to the Roundhouse for the ale, not looking for a shag. Thompson kept the best pint of Wards in town. Could explain why your brain cells have died if you supped enough of it. Join the club!
The best Wards I ever had was in The Red House on Solly Street, It was like rabbit gravy.Thompson's Wards was indeed the best I ever sampled. Plus it was best behaviour in the Roundhouse in his tenure. A proper old fashioned pub landlord.
