Didier Drogba

Drogba was a egotistical shithouse of the highest order. Could've been one of the best & had all the skills to do so. Decided to play to 70% of his capabilities & spend the rest of the time moaning, diving, feigning injury and involving himself in nonsense.

United lost out on Aldridge & Houghton in '85ish when they were at Oxford.

10 goals in 10 finals though. It was have been nice to have a player that actually turned up on the big stage.

I've never doubted his abilities nor what he is capable of. I've rarely seen players who are 'unplayable' and I've seen Drogba play at that level. I can remember him putting a master class in against Newcastle for Marseilles in the UEFA cup once. The build & strength of a middle weight, the pace of a short distance runner, the endurance of long distance runner, good at every aspect of forward play, can defend set pieces and has the ability in either foot & his head.

I can't stand him due to his cheating and by debasing the game I love. As far as i'm concerned, if you cheat this often you are off the roll call of 'greats'. :)

Ian Wallace. Coventry striker. Might have been around same time as not signing Alan Hansen. Clough snr paid about a million quid for him later on.
Someone will put me reyt.
As usual.

Aye, it was the same time. Jimmy Sirrel was manager at the time and seemed to have a decent scout in Scotland identifying good young players. Hansen and Wallace were both seriously looked at, but it was decided not to spend the money. Hansen stayed and a year later signed for Liverpool, whilst Wallace left Dumbarton and signed for Coventry. As you say, Wallace then went from Coventry to Forest for big money.

Heard that one before but a brief look at their careers suggests that was highly unlikely, unless Steve Coppell had a brief period of insanity.
I have heard we were interested in Bright before he went to palace but never heard a Wright rumour. I find it hard to believe because he was great as soon as he got to palace and was only going to move up the food chain.

That’s depressing to hear. However, I bet there are countless examples of this type of story.

For all his shithousery, there’s no denying Drogba is a legend. Genuine big game player.

As per a letter I got back from Bassett in 1995 after I suggested to him that we sign Tore-Andre Flo, he wrote that he had looked at him but we weren’t prepared to pay the sort of money being asked for him. He moved to Chelsea 2 years later for £300,000, so you’d imagine whatever we didn’t pay 2 years previously would have been less than that...

I wonder if Silent or someone else can shed any light on this . I clearly remember the story being circulated at the time and I'm almost certain that it was mentioned somewhere recently , within the last two years or so .

Anyone ?

Warnock just been on TalkSport saying he could have signed Drogba when he was our gaffer. No detail as to whether he was just recommended or if it went further than that but another player to add to those who could have graced a football pitch in Sheffield.

Nice one, Neil.

Think Mr gorgeous, bless 'im, wanted away not long after he joined.

“Hi Neil. Remember when you didn’t take my recommendation to sign Drogba a few years ago because you thought it was too much of a risk to take on a striker from the French 2nd division? Well have I got the French 2nd division striker for you. His name’s Christian Nade, he’s 22, and he’s available on the cheap from Troyes....Oh yes, very similar, he’s built just like Drogba.... No, I don’t think he has quite the same goalscoring record.... but remember when you didn’t take the last recommendation I gave you?”

"Hi Neil its your fav ex player again. Deadly Jaffa........ Yes yes, I know Drogs is doing well isnt he?"
