Old Photos For No Reason Whatsoever

I think it's Cup 3rd round v Crystal Palace, Jan 10th, 1959, won 2-0. That match was certainly played in those conditions. I worked with a Palace fan in the 90s, and it turned out we had both been at that game. It taught him what cold weather is!
Not disagreeing with you but is the floodlight pylon one of the original ones that was installed in 1954? We installed bigger ones in 1961. If it was one of the floodlights that was installed in 1961 then the photo was probably in the 1962/63 winter, maybe against West Ham in February 1963 (it was one of the very few matches throughout Britain that were played on that Saturday)?

The second tallest building in Sheffield although given it is built on much higher ground, the top will be significantly above St Paul's Tower.

Opened in 1966 and now Grade II listed together with the adjoining library.

"Entry to the building was originally made by a wide 'bridge' between fountains over a shallow pool area in front of the building. This pool was eventually drained and covered over when it was found that strong down drafts of wind hitting the building on gusty days caused the fountain to soak people entering and exiting the building.[3]"
Wimps!

You're correct about the floodlights and I have memories of that scene. I've got United vs Burnley nagging in my head, mid sixties, orange ball and Woody scoring. Could also be that one?

This one?
GOAL - v Burnley (h) 15.1.66. Birchenall made the running along the touchline and hit a fierce centre across the face of goal which Woodward slammed into the roof of the net.

That month, the Lane End got demolished so that the BL stand would be built (it was completed in October 1966 for the Sunderland match). If you look at the You tube footage of the New Year Days match in 1966 between us and Northampton you can see the spectators watching from the Lane End and the roof was still there. Wonder if the Burnley match was the last time the spectators could watch from the Lane End before the demolition?

I spent several years on floors 3 and 5 in the early seventies and don’t ever recall getting a soaking on the way in or out.

The picture has triggered a memory however. The Architecture Dept was on the top few floors and during periods of high wind, they had to come down because the building’s movement caused motion sickness. It seemed ironic to me that the only people affected were those learning how to design buildings.

T'other end!

Found these delights. The inside of Sugg Sports in 1961.

The Snorkels in that display had a ping pong ball which acted as a valve to stop the sea or pool water entering your gob. Think they were more lethal than helpful and the serious aquanauts would break them off as soon as they saw any. Spear gun. I've left the water whenever I've seen someone tooled up with one.

I think this was originally a cinema. Long since gone though, I think.

Potters Snooker Club, Gleadless Road, formerly The Heeley Green Picture House. Opened 5th April 1920. Used as a theatre in 1930s. Closed as a cinema in 1962 (renamed Tudor Cinema at this time) and became a bingo hall. It burned down in 2005 and there are flats where it stood.

In 1973 I started my first job and my parents bought me my first made to measure suit from this Burtons branch . Although I wouldn't say we were poor I never really appreciated just how much my parents gave.

Now you get to a certain age and it's too late to express my gratitude.

Interesting that it's a Tetleys sign outside a pub that's been renowned for selling the finest Stones.

Don’t beat yourself up, my friend.

They will have derived their pleasure from simply being able to help you on your way. They wouldn’t have needed you to express your gratitude.

I'm just concerned the New Flats will spoil the View of the Hotel ....... :)

You'll be able to see the hotel from the decks and balconies of the million quid homes Kev will build after he's removed HRHs trousers and pants in court and we're ground sharing with Toytown.

A few more weeks and the questions yet again will be "where", "not in the accounts I'm looking at", "why did we buy a Desso" and the old favourite, "why do we lose so much money when my local pub team made £57 last year".

And so it goes on.

Like Auld Lang Syne on New Year's Eve, there's that introspective thought that we're all that bit older yet still doing the same old same old.

Fortunately we're lucky to have so many sharp forensic accoutants on here to pull us up from time to time and drilldown into the real issues.

In case this all seems a bit too dull, here's an old picture to keep us on track:

It's the Masonic Hall on Shore Lane, Tapton where I'm sure many imagine these behind closed doors deals are done.....

Attending quite a few stag Do's at The Embassy Club Manchester, it soon dawned on me Bernard only had two scripts. Still one more than some on here......
