Derek Dooley

In his later years the media always used to ask Dooley which team he supported.

He used to smile and with real sincerity used to say “I support both Sheffield teams”.

Still don't know why we don't play for the Derek Dooley trophy like Forest and Derby do with the Brian Clough trophy. Would make be a great gesture and something I'm sure both clubs would be up for.

Just .read it, didn't realise it was chemicals on the pitch that had been sprayed to get rid of ice so the game could go ahead, tragic, but met him a couple of times playing cricket at meadowhead, he lived across the road and was a neighbour of our scorer, nice man, and I agree, a good article to let the wider football public made aware of him and where he stands in the affection of the Sheffield public.

I wrote to SUFC to suggest this years ago. Mick Rooker sent a kind reply saying he'd raise it with the board and his counterpart at SWFC but it never went any further. The trophy already exists, the Steel City Challenge cup we played a few 'friendlies' for in the 90s. It's a nice trophy and only needs a new name plate!

Good article, but it’s a strange story & in many ways extremely difficult for the majority to comprehend - die hard ex Wednesday player & manager doing a U turn & devoting himself to us, eh what’s that all about?

However with hindsight he probably gave Bassett the backup & stability that was needed to keep us in Div 1 / Prem for 4 years.

We’re presumably still the holders of it too?

That's a shame, something which would be really simple to implement on the basis both clubs agreed to it. It would just add an additional layer to the great rivalry.

I believe so, I think we beat them 4-2 at the Lane, and I recall it was just before I started Uni so that would have been 1996.

Correct! (Nearly) We played for The Steel City Challenge Trophy three times:

9/8/94 (A) Won 3-2 - Blake (2), Davison 13,724
5/8/95 (H) Lost 1-3 - Flo 13,254
27/8/96 (H) Won 4-1 - Scott, Walker, Starbuck, Sandford 7,271

Went to the ticket office looking for my ST as first match was getting close, 88-90ish.
Tickets were all piled up on a table and Derek Dooley was talking to the office staff.
"Nah den Derek. Mah season ticket in theer ?" I sez.
He slowly turned his head and gave me a look that spoke in itself. Nah den Derek. Who's this t ## t think he's talking to?
"Suppose so" he eventually said.
I skulked out and waited for it to be delivered.
It was rumoured that when we lost him, we had no football man on the board and that's when things weren't so great at the lane.
UTB

A competition that didn’t particularly particularly resonate based on those attendance figures...

"Friends would joke that his heart was always blue and white but Dooley wrote in his autobiography how he knew his loyalties had shifted by the way his heart leapt when the Blades scored against the Owls."

If you look up the word class in a dictionary, it has his name at the side of it.

With the delivery of the look he gave me, yep couldn't agree more.

But it won't stop them inventing spurious 'competitions' to rinse the fans. In (fairly) recent times Texaco Cup, County Cup, Anglo-Scottish Cup, Pennine Radio Cup (seriously - 1981/82), Associate Members Cup, Full Members Cup, Simod Cup, Sherpa Van Trophy, Yorkshire & Humberside Cup, Zenith Data Systems Full Members Cup, Anglo Italian Cup, Johnstone's Paints Trophy, Checkatrade Trophy blah, blah zzzzzzz.

Could be worse. Coleen Rooney Memorial Foreign Holiday Fund Trophy, anybody?

I didn’t realise that either.

A couple of years ago, a lady in our village told me that her Mum was a nurse at Preston Hospital and that she’d looked after Derek Dooley. She appeared on his This Is Your Life, so she must have been quite important and Im wondering if she was the one who tickled his foot and possibly the one in the picture in the article. I’ll try and find out.

What was the friendly at the Sty when we beat them? I could be wrong but I recall Veart scoring. It was some time in the mid nineties, pre season.

Nothing wrong with the Yorkshire and Humberside Cup. One of the only three trophies we've lifted in my lifetime and I include that in my resume of things we've won when asked by smart arse Liverpool and Man Utd fans.... something they'll never win :D

County Cups?

Can't find owt for that, Bush. Carl Veart played for us from 1994-96 and is best remembered for scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win over Arsenal in the FA Cup Third Round replay on 17th Jan. 1996. Good payer was Carl, scoring 15 in 66 games for us including 11 in 30 in the 1994-95 season.

Talking of pointless 'friendlies', on Tuesday 21st November 1989 we played the pigs and lost 2-3 in The Zenith Data Systems Full Members Cup. Dave Bassett was our manager and Ron Atkinson was in charge for Wendy. The crowd? 30,464.
