Is promotion over-rated?

personally i want to see many more matches like the Arsenal home game during our last brief tenure up there ,

the atmosphere and noise that Saturday evening was amazing and getting back in that league with CWAK at the helm it would be even better , ( away games no doubt would be better also as with CWAK i am sure we would attempt to at least cross the half way line )

sure we would lose and probably have a few hammerings but who's says we wouldn't have enough to be better than 3 teams over 38 matches and see some more magical memories with this great management team and squad - as others have said Fulham have stupidly taken there team apart , we wouldn't do that

Would love to see Billy score in the Prem for us and Bash charging into the box with Walker and Stones in his shadow !!

Also the reality is , If we don't go up we will lose CW sooner rather than later

Once that happens i think i will enjoy football more.

It would be great if the top end of the premier league did disappear off to the European Super League as i think it would end up becoming so out of reach that people would turn off.

Watching Football on "TV" is becoming more and more tailored to the viewer. TV being the generic term i'd use for watching it at home.

People knock sky, but they just bid and put football on TV for the price they wanted to.

Now you have Sky, BT, Amazon, BBC, Quest and online for watching games. Saturday night's late game was just at a daft time and it shows that the TV companies are running out of ideas for when to show games. Spurs v Wolves was never going to compete with Arsenal v Liverpool, so they put a later game on.

I think that the greed of the Football Authorities will mean that the rest of football benefits and fans will want their side to play in Premier League 2 because it will be competitive
There's definitely more of a shift to viewing at home vs going to games for the general fan yet crowds continue to remain pretty static across all Leagues. At the end of the day, it's all about entertainment and enjoying watching your team play well and win, back to the original post, that's not the case for most Prem teams week in week out. How much are Cardiff and Fulham enjoying the 'promised land' this season, then there's the perennial strugglers, Soton fans under Hughes etc etc

They can re-hash it as much as they like but already we have football 7 days a week and stupid times, just because TV has the upper hand and that's unlikely to change for the foreseeable. Whether changing the league setup would improve things, not so sure.

I haven't fact checked this but someone posted on Facebook that there's been 55 games played so far by the current top five in the Prem and there's only been 1 loss to a team outside of that top 5.

I want to see us win as many games as possible, and I want another promotion celebration, but it kind of sickens me that a team can come up from League One, like us, and shock the division. Teams have had back to back promotions. The top side changes every season and isn't always that predictable. Meanwhile, the top of the Prem is almost unassailable.

That atmosphere at the Arsenal game when Nade scores and Jags went in goal is a thing from a by-gone age, it’s sooo yesterday.

The BBC always rave on about the partisan atmospheres at Leicester, Huddersfield and Fulham with their clackers and the ultra section at Crystal Palace are quoted as being the most passionate fans in the country ha ha.

Imagine if we get to the PL with everyone taking clackers to the match with the odd voovoozalah.
What at atmosphere that would be? We could even pipe cheering/ clapping through the PA system on demand ha ha.

I would hate us to be part of the top 6 soap opera if im totally honest, but if 5 of them fuck off as they seem hell bent on doing it would make the PL fantastic again and would llove to be part of that

Would you settle for a plump homely girlfriend who enjoyed cooking and knitting and lay on her back twice a week and let you plough her.
Or would you have a pop at a hot vivacious girl with a love of life and having fun.

Take yer pick.

This could happen sooner rather than later. The European Super League is under discussion again and they will breakaway one day. This will result in a return to reality in the UK with the remaining clubs on a more even keel, the foreign owners and their megabucks will fuck off to the glitz of the European league and the £million per month salaries will be a thing of the past. The only obstacle to this is the wannabees in the current Premier league (and a few in the EFL too) who crave a piece of the action with the big boys. Get these guys onside and I'd go one step further - start an EFL Premier league minus the big six, fuck them off completely. This I feel is the only solution to the same few clubs taking an ever increasing slice of the pie and ruining the game for clubs other than them and their fans alike..

I'd love to see us in the Premier League for a season or two, it'd be great to play against the best teams in the country and see some of the best players in the world at the lane.
Once the novelty of that wore off however, there would just be no fun in seeing us play for 9th at best and lose 15-20 games a season, because that's all it'll ever be as long as those top 6 are around.
The games around the top end of the Championship are much more exciting to watch than mid table premier league games.

The Premier league was created to facilitate the top six sides of English football, the other fourteen sides which make up the twenty club league are insignificant.

Wait, what? Look at the ten teams who were top six in the last FL and first PL seasons, and tell me where in the Premier League they are right now

Go up and secure the clubs financial future. If we did go up it would be a miracle to stop up, but Huddersfield pulled it off.

Well it doesn't really matter how many people go and i'm not saying the biggest crowd pullers deserve to be there, just a bit of a sign to me that its overrated. If it was that captivating surely more people would be arsed to go?

Bottom feeder games in the Premier League are far less entertaining than the Championship top hlaf and basically pointless.

I don't think we could ever expect to ever be better than a Fulham or Huddersfield if we ever make it back so may as well stay where we are then. Although if the game between current 3rd and 6th in the Championship at the weekend is anything to go by it's pretty dull at the top of the Championship as well.

I'd love to be in a position to sign extremely talented, elegant and technically astute young players and watch them flourish in the top league. Somebody like David Brooks for example. I'd also like our academy to improve and become something more like La Masia. When the best local kids are looking at the best place to complete their training, I want SUFC to be the obvious choice. I'd love to see parts of our stadium improved, and perhaps some cash put aside with a view to improving atmosphere. I'd love to see us to win a cup at Wembley while my old man is still around and able to attend.

The chances of any of these things happening improve considerably as a Premier League side.

The PL is the ultimate dream for every club, only to find out once your there that the grass isn't always greener. If we go up we go up, if not then we have another season is this bloody good league.
Would you settle for a plump homely girlfriend who enjoyed cooking and knitting and lay on her back twice a week and let you plough her.

I'd happily take the plumper who let's me plough her.

promotion is fantastic

The problem is being in the premier league.

Most years, there are 6 teams fighting for the top 4

3 or 4 teams teams fighting to finish 7th and get into Europa league

and 10 or 11 teams fighting relegation.

it would be a miserable slog

In answer to the OP. Yes I think that the PL is over rated worst than that it is corrupt. Remember our first game back there intent to foul!!
But, as others have said football should be about winning games and being the best you can be. That will hopefully lead promotion. As SwissBlade said this gives us the best chance to hang on to our key players and management team. But, how would sections of our support cope with defeats? We’ve seen the reaction to Saturday’s defeat how long would it be before the wilder out chants started.
In conclusion I want promotion to help us keep our best players and securing our financial future but fear the corrupt nature of the PL and the patience of a section of our fanbase to deal with defeat.

Didn't we play Forest last week?

I agree with both sides of the coin here.

Promotion to the PL doesn’t seem all that when you look at the lower midtable sides who have been there a few years. I’m sure the novelty would wear off after a year or two. There’s little hope for anyone breaking the top 6, so what’s the aim every season, top 10?

However, if we aren’t aiming for PL football, then genuinely what’s the point?

Which is probably what Fulham fans said about Slavisa Jokanovic last season - now in line for the sack.

Which is precisely what Martin Samuel says today:

'When your league (European Super League) fails, as it will because it is artificial and boring, in essence non-competitive and the fans will hate it, don't think you can come back to us on the same deal as before.

Junior partners. That is what you will be. Half a vote at the meetings, half the money when we divide the spoils up at the end of the season.

You'll have to take it, because the alternative will be to go back to your empty, meaningless league, or to tour the world like the Harlem Globetrotters playing exhibition matches for Charlie Stillitano against all the other clubs too greedy to know they were on to a good thing.'
Link

Occasionally writes some good stuff, does Samuel. But then he goes and ruins it. He thinks FFP should be abolished as it has been a 'self-serving scam':

'It was hijacked from its original course and turned into a means of raising the drawbridge on the rest of football so that owner investment became close to illegal, and nobody could catch those already in front.

So, excuse those who find Manchester City's circumventing of some profoundly unfair and harmful rules the least of the problems with FFP.

Provided owner investment is a gift, not a loan, and does not have to be paid back, what is the issue?
' Link

Samuel now sees FFP as 'unfair' and 'punishing the ambitious'. He really needs to make his mind up.

In answer to the OP. Yes I think that the PL is over rated worst than that it is corrupt.

Really?

Manchester City accused of cheating: Club face UEFA and Premier League sanctions as hacked documents claim Sheik Mansour paid sponsor deals himself to satisfy FFP and financial reports are labelled 'web of lies'

It claimed £59.5m of £67.5m deal with Etihad Airways was financed by Mansour
(City's owner). Link So, according to Samuel, 'What is the issue?' Oh, and maybe of interest to Mr McCabe...

Now Manchester City want a Chinese club as Premier League giants close in on deal to buy Far East side (taking their global portfolio up to six!)
  • Manchester City are in the final stages of adding a Chinese club to their portfolio
  • Deal for the side, believed to be in Chengdu, should be confirmed this year

promotion is what everyone aspires to and so they should but fans massively over react to relegation, wilders already got us far higher than we've any right to expect given the budget so if( and its a big if) he manages to get us there the chances of staying there under the current owners is very slim indeed.im no great fan of the prem like many but the money would be nice.

Fucking hell, don't know whether or not to take it all back now he's on board. As I pointed out though, the biggest obstacle to isolating the greedy bastards who make up the top six are the wannabees such as Leeds, Newcastle, Villa, Forest and those fucking imbeciles at S6 who consider themselves to be amongst the elite. United can take some of the flak too as they were in the right place at the right time when the Premiership was formed and were more than glad to lap it up only to pay the price in subsequent years. It needs a respected statesman-type figure from the non-top six clubs to get the rest to gel and the game reorganised to what it should be, who I don't know.

I am no great lover of the Premier League in its present form, but I don't think promotion can ever be overrated. Football is a competition to be the best of the league you are in, the reward for that is to compete against better teams in a better league. Sure the new teams are at a disadvantage, so what, you fight harder. Maintaining the status quo for your club is a right old battle, but you face it head on & try to be the best you can be or you don't give a fuck & before you know it your club is dead.

Samuel does like to ride with the hare and the hounds and has a very selective view on what constitutes 'corruption'. (He's a West Ham fan, after all.)

And you've as much chance of finding 'a respected statesman-type figure from the non-top six clubs to get the rest to gel and the game reorganised to what it should be' for football as you would for the Leave/Remain vote. They're all bent. It comes with the job description.

If they leave, they leave. Why let them back. Let them play each other six times a year.
