There have been many examples on here to the Grunters being referred to as South Barnsley , on the basis that when the Sty was built it was on land outside the Sheffield border .

The assumption is that , this being the case , it must therefore have been in Barnsley , the next Local Authority to the north of Sheffield . Whilst this is now the case , it wasn't at the time since there was another authority separating the two , known as Wortley Rural District Council .

This was a very substantial Local Authority in area , stretching from just South of Birdwell and Hoyland in the north down as far as Owlerton and going westward beyond Bradfield. It encompassed most , if not all the land on which both the Parson Cross and Southey estates were built and included the villages of High Green , Chapeltown , Ecclesfield , Oughtibridge and Worrall to name but a few. It's main depot was located on Claywheels Lane at Wadsley Bridge , just a short stroll from Pig Central .

At the time of construction of said sty , Wortley itself consisted of a church , a pub , a couple of farms and a few cottages with shit houses called middens , which were planks of wood with a hole in over a pile of ash which a bloke had to come and take away every couple of weeks . ( As late as the 1950's I used one of them at a school friends house )

So you see , dear reader , that by calling them South Barnsley we're actually making them sound quite posh - impossible as that may sound !!

Numpty's Dusty Ruts. , my dear old man, will very much like this. As he now resides in Barnsley (technically) he is permanently offended by the "South Barnsley" reference.
Indeed. This reference is quite offensive to those of us who travel from the green and pleasant lands of Barnsley. I don't necessarily buy the geographical stuff anyway. The ground may be an offensive rust bucket full of "whatever", but parts of S6 are ok (even rather pleasant!) whereas no-one could sensibly argue that most of S2 is prime real estate!!!! Tin hat firmly on!!

Yes, S6 has some much nicer areas than any that are in S2
S2 is your stereotypical inner city area, Manor, Manor Park, Wybourn, Norfolk Park, Arbourthorne.
But parts of S6 like Bradfield, Stannington, Rivelin and Walkley are quite nice areas

You’re looking too deep into it mate.

I refer to them as South Barnsley as a lot of their fans come from there and surrounding areas rather than Sheffield itself, the other reason being it’s on the outskirts of Sheffield.

Well compared to the Lane anyway.

The biggest reason though is I believe the bulk of Sheffield, support United.

They rely on support from the outlying areas, that support has, and is continuing to dwindle.

They’re a spent force and have been for years, when we get promoted this season we’ll effing bury them once and for all.

Totally agree with this, I work in Sheffield and the majority (75%) support united. Would imagine its the other way around on the outskirts. i.e. Barnsley.

Offended????

Where have I gave you the impression I’m offended?

About what?

Lighten up mate, just trying to contribute to your thread.

My "cod research" as someone who lives and works in Barnsley now but is very much of and from Sheffield, is actually the opposite. I travel to BDTBL by train from near Penistone. There are a number of Blades who are already on the train or get on during the journey (including at Chapeltown!!!). If Barnsley are at home I see them on the train too. However, I do go to Sheffield by train now and again when Wendy are at home. I'd say that fewer Wendies get on in "greater Barnsley" than Blades when we're at home (until Chapeltown!!!!). Most of the Blades fans seem to be either "exiles" like me, or from out Penistone way, where a lot of people consider themselves as more Sheffield than Barnsley anyway.

45 years ago the number of kids at Oughtibridge School (then in Wortley Rural District Council) who were Blades could be counted on the fingers of one hand. Today the numbers are pretty 50/50. Only a matter of time boys and girls.............

Parts of Stannington nice ? thats like saying parts of Pitsmoor are nice .

Agree!

Bramall Lane is an oasis in S2. Hillsboro is a cess pit in S6.

I grew up in those parts in the 90s and United were definitely third behind Wednesday and Barnsley in terms of support at my school.

Has that got something to do with the fact that the last time Wednesday had a decent side was in the 1990's?

Bit of an unfair comparison as S6 is massive compared to S2 and we all know it.

Maybe you have been misled , Blades travel by the rakity old Northern rail , while the masses of pigs travel by luxury cars , giving you a false perspective of our support in these areas ?

I went to school on the Cross, out of a roster of approx 400 pupils I was the only Blades season ticket holder. Going back to school on January 5th 1980 was character building to say the least.

Now if your Dad had been Jack Charlton he'd have told you to kick the shite out of anyone who got in your way.

S2 is Sheffield. The rest are just suburbs.
