The free kick

It wasn’t a foul, the ref was wank.
Agree the ref was wank ,all game. But I thought it was a foul ,really close to where I sit and I reckon it was. Shame for Stevens because he had a great game apart from 3 bad moments ,the miss ,a needless booking and a daft foul that cost us ,I didn't think he could get back to the player he was but he is getting there.

TBH Wiz, I thought it was a foul because he went into the back of him. It might have been soft but it gave the ref a decision to make and 9 of 10 times, they give them.
My initial reaction was that Crouch chucked his body into Stevens and fell to the floor, I’ll have to see it back to confirm either way.

The ref was still weak and wank though. :)

See my post above Sitters, I’ll comment again when I get chance to see it.

Stevens is playing very well recently though, that I do agree on.

Too preoccupied with the apparent threat from Crouch. Expect Wendy to play their own Bigfoot in order to put an extra man in midfield and make good use of the Hoof. We "needed" 3 men to cover him last season - I hope we don't make the same mistake next month................

I thought the same, there was a slap sound that could be heard in the BL Upper, Crouch sold it and the ref bought it.

I'd said when he came on, we need to avoid conceeding free kick and corners now he's on, they're going to be pumping balls into him, he did get on the end of a couple

Initially we had 4 men in the wall, one of them moved into the centre while the ref was marking up and the 3 that were left readjusted their positions. That possibly cost us 2 points but who knows? We could have stayed with 4 in the wall forcing him to cross the ball and they still score. That’s football, shit happens and teams score from free kicks.

I don’t feel too down today, I’m still buzzing from the overall performance and if we go to form we’re now due to win 4 on the bounce so we’ll be up for a Pig roast. :)

If ever there was a time to put someone on the post or put an extra man in the wall to be sure, isn’t it when you’re almost at full time, winning and the opposition have a free kick in a dangerous position?

If everyone didn’t have their mind set on diminishing their path to goal there’s something up.

Talking of walls and for any experts out there. When you have a player of Crouch’s height he should be at the end of the wall. It surprised me that he was in the middle of the Stoke wall, actually reducing visibility and increasing the likelihood of Norwood going for a corner. Any experts out there who would agree or disagree and explain why?

I shouted at the bugger to sitdarn. He was blocking my view of the ball on the Kop, inconsiderate wanker.

Well, I think there were3 fuckups for that goal.

We have 3 CBs on the pitch, Stearman comes on and make it 4, and all 4 line up in the middle for the cross over to Crouch.

Why doesnt one of them move over towards Enda to give him some support, or indeed do the marking job on Croochio.

All 4 of them CBs want fucking

Its a soft free kick, but Stevens is trying to compete, probably best letting him head it

Enda wants fucking

The wall is lined up wrong, piss poor by those the wall, and maybe the Keeper, though he is trying to get em over

Fuck the lot of em, 3 mistakes, either one being sorted would have stopped that goal

Stoke were average and there for the taking .... onto to Saturday :)

Basham stretched a leg out and didn’t reach the ball and without any bend it went inside the post, that’s ridiculously poor. Either Basham because he has ignored Henderson or Henderson because he has lined the wall up so poorly and/or he hasn’t screamed at Basham until he has moved where he wanted him to

What a fuck up that was. Could see it straightaway from the other end of the ground.

1. Why only a 3 man wall?

2. There was only a right footer standing over it - the wall could easily afford to move more to the left.

3. Know your opponent. This is most annoying of all. Joe Allen is a quality player easily capable of doing something like that - yes, even if he's blatantly looking towards Crouch.

What a fucking needless throwaway. Especially frustrating as we deserved the win, weren't even hanging on like usual and it was against a hugely underperforming expensive, well fancied side who were absolutely there for the taking.

Just seen it again on the highlight. Keeper’s all day long.

A very rare error from an excellent goalkeeper.

I personally think it's disgusting that other teams select clever players who win unwarranted free kicks. Thank heavens that SUFC don't resort to picking players like Billy Sharp who win endless free kicks in that way every week.

The creation of the wall was a total shambles though and I do think that Henderson knew it and was trying to get them to sort it but ran out of time. He was fooking furious with the defence and that is no bad thing.

Crouch and Allen are top quality players who can give teams with only 20 minutes of decent play an away draw against a better team. It's harsh but true.

Otherwise we were great and we should focus on the positives IMHO

Sometimes it's better to not even have a wall.

This was one of those occasions.

Absolutely. It's one of those received wisdoms in football that all attacking free kicks warrant a wall. It simply isn't the case. There's no way Allen could have scored from there without the benefit of a wall.

Unless he rockets it into the top left corner because he has an unobstructed passage to goal. o_O

It is a measure of how highly Henderson is regarded that he has not been slaughtered for this one. It is one in the 'disappointed not to have done better' category, not a howler; our keepers this season and last have been just about free from real clangers. I think it is also worth noting that in our last 2 games 2 England goalkeepers have got away with proper howlers. Carson on Saturday dropped a simple cross, and without the block on the line, JOC's header would have been a last-ditch equaliser. And Butland in the first half on Tuesday similarly dropped a straightforward centre, and only in the next phase of play was the linesman's flag raised for offside, and Butland's embarrassment at giving away a goal spared. I assume the decision was correct, but Butland cannot have known when he dropped the ball that offside would be given. Both those errors will be forgotten - sometimes a keeper gets lucky.

Butland looked awful , Henderson will stream past him to the England bench when he joins someone more fashionable.

Although I fully agree with you, in the game on Tuesday there was only 1 keeper who made an error which resulted in a goal.
