Not sure if Woodburn is the answer or not, but competition for Duffy is now vital in my opinion. If he's out of form or injured we've no one similar to fill the void.

Trouble is finding someone who can make the best of that "free role" in the way he does within the sort of budget we work with.

The Jota link would make sense as I think he could play this role well. I'm definitely of the opinion he's out of reach financially though.

Who out there do we think would fit the bill and be affordable?

We need to at least give Woodburn a proper try

I know he hasn't been too impressive in his appearances so far, barring Boro where he was the best on the pitch for us in the 2nd, but he's just a kid
He can’t even get on the bench Eric so I think he’s done and dusted here which is s real shame considering we need someone for Duffys role.

As daft as it sounds, I think McGoldrick could play in Duffys role?

Another couple of names to chuck into the hat are Daniel Johnson of Preston and I also think Josh McEachran is good at linking play up but he seems to play a more defensive role?

How many players who play like Duffy have we seen in the last few years? I can't think of many. That and goal scorer are the hardest positions to fill.

Jota seems way out of our price range. I just don't see who's out there

It’s frustrating that woodburn isn’t deemed good enough for the bench. It means they whenever Duffy isn’t at it, or tires, out only option is Coutts which turns it into a flat midfield 3 with not enough creativity further up the field.

Agree.. the problem is that creative midfielders and goal scorers are always in demand and go for a premium.
At current levels, that premium starts at £ 10 million plus. We simply can’t afford to pay £10-£15 million plus £40K a week wages.

Our options are to go for someone more underwhelming who we can developer for the future.
We’ll probably spend £5 million in January and even at that price the player will be a big risk
And I can imagine our fans complaining that the signing isn’t sexy enough but the reality is we don’t have £15 million to risk.

The truth is we’re going to hope that Wilder manages to pull a rabbit from the hat. The McGoldrick and Norwood signings prove that you don’t need to pay large amounts for good quality. We’re going to need some luck with any new Jan19 signings.

I suppose he's a realistic shout and he'd definitely be improving his career prospects if he were to come here. PNE are dreadful at the minute slugging it out at the wrong end of the table.

Johnsons not a Championship player of exceptional quality but he's an alternative to Duffy and would certainly provide more serious competition for Duff's role than Woodburn is currently doing, plus he's all the experience of playing in PNE's first team at this level and got promoted with them from L1 as well I think?

I would be reluctant to pay over a million though, he's probably worth a little less.

Someone suggested Chuks Aneke as a striker a while ago, but he does seem to be playing in a no 10 role. He's big and strong, but also skilful and makes some very clever passes (watch the video below). 8 goals in 10 games this season.

If his fitness is good and injury problems behind him he's one to consider.

He's needed upfront.

Chris hasn't said he's done so I'm hoping not. There's a player there.

Aneke was a superbly talented player, he's playing at least 1 level below him and finding it too easy.

The Woodburn signing has really fucked us. We all thought Woodburn would at the very least be a decent option from the bench to replace a tiring Duffy, or to add a bit of creativity up top.

I'm not saying that keeping Holmes would have been a much better option in hindsight, but keeping Holmes would have been a much better option.

I know Holmes is generally seen as 'not at our level' but he's clearly not as not at our level as Woodburn is.

Freeman in January would be a brilliant signing.

25 years old, so it is probably now-or-never for him, if he is going to be anything other than a League 2/League 1 player.

Yeah the Woodburn one is a mystery really. Liverpool fans were all saying how they were looking forward to seeing what he could for us, and the lad has hardly featured at all.

Attitude off the pitch?, not physically up to the man's game?, injured?

Honestly mate I think I’ve just got an anuerysm trying to read that

Holmes looked really good in Pre season, weird one

I don't know why we don't push Fleck further forward when Duffy eventually runs out of steam.
Fleck's place in the middle can be taken by a number of players, Coutts or Basham.
But Fleck can do some damage on the odd occasion he does drive forward, as we saw at Derby.

Obviously not a long term option or the final answer, but we should at least try McGoldrick in the Duffy role behind Sharp and Clarke at some point. He’s not as mobile but he’s definitely clever enough.

Push Fleck up and/or stick Johnson in maybe. He's said he sees himself as a midfielder. He's quick, decent feet.

That's if Woodburn really isn't up for it, although assuming he doesn't go back in January, there's plenty of games left for him to show up.

I also think McG could do a job there too.

Coutts and Norwood do not seem to make a good combination as both want to play the same role; either or at the moment means Norwood and Coutts on the bench.

Dids could do it.

Fleck also.

The intriguing one is Marv Johnson. Hunch tells me he might not be too bad in the role.

I really do hope behind closed doors CW is training Johnson to play a more central role a la Wenger did with Thierry Henry! That would solve all our problems...
