The 'Duffy Role' is essentially a winger between both sides trying to create and take people on.

Fleck/D.Johnson/Coutts/Norwood are not wingers and could not offer the same attributes as Duffy/Holmes/Woodburn/Freeman/Brooks/Jota/Canos.

Your wrong.

Fleck could go in goal and still be awesome :)

The intriguing one is Marv Johnson. Hunch tells me he might not be too bad in the role

Is that the same 'hunch' that told you how shit Leon was last night?

Johnson is a fast strong left sided player. He certainly has promise all down the left but I haven't seen enough of him to know his limits. Quite why you think he has the skill and much more importantly, the brains to do Duffy's job, I don't know.

What about Henderson? His hair is a similar colour to Duffy's. Or JOC as he's a Scouser too.....

Interesting response.

Does my hunch trouble you ??

Additionally, can you please confirm EXACTLY where I have described last nights Leon Performance as, quote, “shit” ?

Right round baby :);)

Okay I'll retract the word 'shit', but you certainly got the knife in. You said the following, which you hilariously seem to think is 'constructive'.

"Constantly lacks anticipation.

Permanently on his heals instead of his toes.

Frustratingly, rarely gets in front of his marker to latch on to forward passes, thus turning over possession.

And for a CF, who is judged mostly on scoring goals, that’s 1 for the season. Lost count of the sitters in that time.

It is PAINFULLY obvious that a high percentage of our fan base give huge credit to a player that runs around a lot (that mostly amounts to little achieved) and who occasionally wins a header that amounts to summat !!"

Coutts, three man midfield, unless Woodburn gets his arse into gear.

However, I think we really need to get someone else in who can do the Duffy role.

Over the next few years we need to bring in replacements for Duff and the front lads.

So i believe I made 4 specific points about attributes which were not exactly complimentary.

I can live with that.

Sticking the knife in ? Really ??

Destructive (as has been said by others, not you) ?? Honestly ??

Just out of curiosity, which of the 4 points made (based on a sample of Leon’s total performance levels in the shirt over the last 2 and a bit years) do you think are inaccurate ??

If you are genuinely 'curious' see my reply, post #36 on the Sharp/Clarke thread.

If no one else can play the Duffy role would it be fair to refer to it as "the number 21 role" from now on.

I think McGoldrick could play it anyway. He was all over the pitch last night. Superb player.

Callum Robinson of Preston looked a tidy player the other week.

Robinson isn’t really a no.10 or attacking midfielder. He plays on the left of a 3 up front and thrives in that channel. Under Grayson he often played in a striking pair in a 4-4-2 up top off a big man in Hugill. He’s also filled in on occasion in the past 12 months as a lone no.9, doesn’t really have the physicality for it but his link up makes him a decent ‘false 9’.

If he signed for the Blades he would be most effective as one of your 2 up top, probably off a big man.

As I’ve said before you offered £2.5m in the summer and whilst I gather Wilder is persistent, I can’t see you getting him. We’ve had bids from Fulham and Derby in the past and he didn’t kick up a fuss, on a long contract as well so will probably go for Hugill type money (£10m) if we were to sell. And if that were to happen Trevor Hemmings probably wouldn’t reinvest any of it.

I suppose he's a realistic shout and he'd definitely be improving his career prospects if he were to come here. PNE are dreadful at the minute slugging it out at the wrong end of the table.

Johnsons not a Championship player of exceptional quality but he's an alternative to Duffy and would certainly provide more serious competition for Duff's role than Woodburn is currently doing, plus he's all the experience of playing in PNE's first team at this level and got promoted with them from L1 as well I think?

I would be reluctant to pay over a million though, he's probably worth a little less.

Johnson is more of a deep lying playmaker, has just signed a new deal and he’s certainly worth more than a million, can be outstanding on his day in this division. I doubt he’d play for you instead of the likes of Norwood though.

Injury doubts for Wigan

As usual, CW keeping cards close to his chest

Worrying because Duffy was holding his groin before he went off and Fleck was hobbling about a few minutes before the end

That would be a gut wrencher if both are missing

Looks like it’s McG filling the role today as some have suggested - let’s see how he does!

I think we’ve missed the chance to sign Freeman. After QPR’s recent upturn in form, they could well be in the play-off conversation come January.
Brooks and Duffy should have been the two this season but we sold cheap again.
I’m sure Holmes for Duffy after 60/70mins would have been a great option given the disappointing performances of Woodburn so far...but hindsight is a wonderful thing. Also, Holmes couldnt perform the Duffy role for a full 90 if the Duffman picked up injuries/suspensions.
One thing on our side now is that our current style of play must be a ball playing midfielder’s dream...so, I doubt we’d be a tough sell to the individual player IF we can get the finances right.
