Think we are a very good side but lack one of these types of players like when we had Brooks :( Some youth, pace and skill is vital and our front 3 aren't getting younger to be playing 46 games a season..

The idea to replace Brooks with Woodburn seemed sound in theory for this season but unfortunately it's not worked out and now we are basically relying on one player who can't last 90 minutes as our main creative output. I have sympathy with United to a degree here as nobody thought Woodburn would have started so poorly.

I always thought Woodburn was a striker though...

He is a striker or can play just off the striker which is why I find it strange we’ve tried to mould him into Duffy’s CAM role. Surely he would be better coming off the bench for one of the strikers than Duffy.

Fully expect him to be recalled in January and loaned to another Championship team.

I know that square pegs in round holes isn't Wilder's style, but Woodburn just off Sharp and McGoldrick in the Duffy role wouldn't be the worst idea. McGoldrick is dropping so deep anyway he almost looks like an attacking midfielder at times. Think others on here have suggested the same before. Can always bring Woodburn off and chuck Duffy on if it's not quite working.

Woodburn is a different kind of player to Brooks. The big risk with signing young forward players in a pressing system is: what can do without the ball? Woodburn is here to learn that aspect - in a different system to the one which Liverpool employ. The necessity of this off the ball work is accentuated in United's setup, when compared with many of our rivals. I'd hazard a guess that this is why Liverpool lent him to us. I wouldn't be averse to see him play as a second striker, where his defensive role would be more limited. Essentially, he could be given a free role with Duffy still fulfilling the defensive duties. Duffy is our key defensive player, so it is obviously hard to replace him with a green kid.

I agree with the OP, it's our main drawback this year. We had that quality/spark but sold it.

Now, short of an open chequebook or a club who is frothing at the possibility of loaning someone to Frankie Lamps, we're going to struggle to compete on that front.

Don't worry, it will be easy to replace Brooks...

I think what we need to be doing before the JTW is finding a player, not dissimilar to Jaoa at the pigs, a well built quick forward, and an almost as good as Duffy, if such a player exists, to replace him during games, and full time eventually.

Oh, wait, we all think that don't we??

Duffy playing behind Brooks just playing off McGoldrick/Sharp as a second striker. Just imagine that.

I wouldn’t include Lawrence in there as I don’t think he would fit in well with our squad our style of play at all, he does a lot less work off the ball than Duffy who Wilder seems to have an issue with.

Woodburn should have been that man but it hasn’t worked out, it’s just one of those things. If we are serious about promotion then this needs addressing in January, we simply have to spend big for Freeman.

It would cost £12m to replace Brooks, our ceiling spend cost is £4m

See what you mean but in today’s market valuations are no longer a linear reflection of ability, it all depends who is buying and selling.

For example someone with Brooks potential at Southend would cost 3 million.
Someone with Brooks potential at Real Madrid would cost us 30 million.
Also depends who the buying clubs are and whether there’s competition to sign that player.

Brooks valuation has only increased because he’s playing regularly in the PL.
When we sold him his playing record and experience was very underwhelming, hence lower valuation.

Villa had one of the so called best young talents when we played them but they couldn't get the ball to him

Brooksy, for all the hype on this board had very few games last season where i'd say he was 'at it' (to use a Wilder phrase).

You always need a blend of youth and experience.

Is it worth recalling Holmes? (If there’s a clause)
Didn’t really get a look in last season, seems to be doing reasonably well at Oxford, maybe worth a go off bench for Duffy.

Saying that, probably not good enough at the level we’re at now

We're going to have to do something like this if we can't get anybody in during January. At the moment the bench is a player light of being fully usable and that is accepting that Coutts needs game time to ease him in and Clarke will come good. Either Holmes and/or Evans needed.

Holmes isn't the answer. Doing alright at Oxford but too slow for the Championship.

This is where we have to open the cheque book. There are 2 players at lesser sides in the Championship who we should be after , Jota and Freeman, both have been rumoured and both can play the Duffy role. Will McCabe and the Prince sanction the spending of the Brooks money? Remember CW said he hasn't touched it in the last window.

Can’t see Freeman heading up north and Jota will be on double our top earner and would cost north of £10m. I think Brum would be very reluctant to sell given he’s the first name on the teamsheet. In a contracted JTW, I think they’d be tricky (and admittedly I think the latter is mediocre).

I can’t see Freeman doing the defensive work Duffy is expected to do. I’m not sure about Jota, never really thought about it when I’ve watched him (maybe he does, Brum looked a solid unit when I watched them earlier in the season). Like you, I’m not convinced it’s a deal we can do.

We werent when he was here

We didn't have the same squad as now or a fit Brooks . Brooks also has a years development in him, and you can already see the difference in his Bournemouth displays. The bigger problem is not replacing him. Brooks or Woodburn?

We haven't got the same squad because we sold him to bring new players in

I’m glad this thread has resurfaced again. I’ve missed not hearing about the Brooks sale since the last defeat.:eek::eek::rolleyes:

I wonder if Johnson could do the job ?
Only really seen him in that first game but he can beat a man and defend plus he was fast, a Duffy in the making perhaps ?
